TGS 2008: Sony's Yoshida wants Xbox 360 to succeed in Japan |
Ó
Well this is a surprise. In a recent interview, Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida had several good things to say about the Xbox 360. What happened to all the mud slinging between Sony and Microsoft? This is so unnatural. In the interview, Yoshida commented on the huge success that the Xbox 360 has been experiencing lately on their home turf of Japan. He says he wants the Microsoft console to succeed there so that gamers get more exposed to HD gaming:
In terms of realistic-looking graphics and smarter AI, they haven't really shown the appetite for what this generation of gaming can offer. I'd really like to see both PS3 and 360 succeed here.
What Microsoft is offering and what we are offering are closer, compared to what other platforms are offering. Because of that commonality, the new games coming out on 360 and PS3 help to get consumers more interested in this generation of gaming.
Aside from this, Yoshida also said he liked the design of the New Xbox Experience, particularly the design of the avatars, saying:
I think it's quite nice. I like the avatar designs they're working on. [...] Personally, Microsoft's work is closer to my personal preference. The Miis are very nice, but everybody looks cute, like Japanese-style characters.

There are times when I like honest people, and when I don't--this case isn't the latter, Sony and M$ are obvious friends and I'd like the PS3 to also succeed (allow my spelling) in Japan. Next-Generation Japanese developed games need easy development, and hopefully when they are forced to learn about harder development (ps3) we'll get to see more Japanese games using more impressive technology. ... As for times when I don't like it when people are honest... are times when someone withpower in Square admits Enix' Dragon Quest > Final Fantasy... no wonder Sakaguchi left.
I think its more of the case if both systems are succeeding there's healthy competition which is good for everyone.
I was expressing my reasoning for support it, but I do agree with what you said--one console plan would stop designers from needing to be creative.
The company-to-company trash talking gets old, Yoshida's comment is very refreshing.
but I get the point. While I can't say I'll ever own a PS3, I do know that I would buy one over a Wii. Even the GameCube was more of a gamer's console than the Wii will ever be. The things that Sony is doing with their first party line up is what Microsoft tried to do with the original xbox. Show off the muscle and make gaming an art. That 360 isn't a slouch in that department either. The Wii, however, is just another system to let Nintendo make the games it wants to make. -V
