Phil Harrison - Image 1Sony's "sticking to their guns" and marshaling its forces for the big holiday season, which Phil Harrison discusses in an interview during the Tokyo Game show.

In the interview he gives a broad idea of what Sony's planning for the future. Harrison, big boss down at SCEE and SCEI, explains during the interview that Sony is planning a big move during the holiday season, as is all the console companies.

Harrison explains that a price cut alone wouldn't cut it for the masses at large. The price cut would radiate through the gaming industry, but it would take a longer amount of time for it to appeal to a broader mass market. For their part, Sony will push on marketing the PlayStation 3's functions as an all-in-one media hub, having media platforms that expand beyond games like Blu-ray movies, networking (via PSN), and music:

This holiday season, weÂ’re going to see a really tremendous lineup of software from us and from third parties and also the increasing importance of Blu-ray disc as a movie format. [...] ItÂ’s not just about running a two-week campaign on TV and then sitting back and waiting for the orders to roll in. ItÂ’s a much more sophisticated beast, coupled with a marketplace which is far more competitive than itÂ’s ever been, not just in the videogame category, but entertainment eyeballs generally. ThereÂ’s web, movie, DVD, Blu-ray, TV, game, music, live [events], sports, travel. These are all our competitors now.

Harrison re-emphasizes Sony's drive to grab the market on a more long term outline, saying that they want to become the "creative [...] and commercial choice" for a development studio. The PlayStation franchise's strength, he explains, doesn't come from a single title but rather from its ability to deliver the "broadest possible range of games":

[...] We just need to stay focused on building the right game content, bringing those to our systems, and then IÂ’m pretty happy that everything else will fall into place. [...] You can see the games that weÂ’re releasing this year and you can jump forward 18 months and imagine what their sequels are going to be like. You can see the games that weÂ’ve got coming out in 2008. Again weÂ’ve got some incredible powerhouse titles. So yeah, weÂ’re just going to stick to our guns.

...they still think blu-ray is important...Gaming is just a perk of the system...Its not a video game systems...is a MEDIA HUB...and gaming is just added....

My god sony. So who's buying your system? Gamers or media ethusiasts?...and since you are losing money already...how are you going to get revenue back...if there aren't more GAMERS then others...you need the money made off of overpriced GAMES...its a GAMING MACHINE...or is it not a GAMING MACHINE.

» true

It either is a gaming machine or not a gaming machine, there is no third direction.

i like it, and its quite true.

by antbing - 2007-09-24 06:08
» I bought one

I am a gamer and a media enthusiast. I hooked up (2) 500GB Seagate drives mine and use it for all my music, movies, TV shows, pics, and any other media I need. I also play Warhawk, oblivion, Dirt, RFOM, Rainbow Six:vegas, and a few other games. I cant wait for HOME (yes I know it got pushed back and that blows) and Divx support. I am very happy with the PS3 so far. I use it non-stop and it has never frozen or given me any problems, unlike my xbox360 which has been back to MS twice so far.

» they are going in the wrong direction

I'm sorry but I would rather have a game machine than a media hub. I would just pull out my modded xbox to run media player on it if I wanted a media hub. It is better than anything out on the market to date imo.

» ZZzzZ

Anyway, what are they planing for this holliday? I haven't heard of many (or any) high profile titles being released arround Xmas for PS3. And no additional price cut either at seems. At least not one in Europe and Japan.

Sorry but without this imaginary game library he is talking about, PS3 isnät gping to be a hot item during Xmas.

2008 is a whole different story though. That's when a lot of people are picking up their PS3's with MGS4, White Knight Story, Tekken 6, DMC 4, GT5, RE 5, Soul Calibur 4, Final Fantasy XIII etc.

But whats coming for Xmas? I can't see anything really. Perhaps Disgaea 3 if it makes it in time. But that's not a whole lot to go on either.

by huked on foniks - 2007-09-24 08:42
» Media Hub?

They need to give the PS3 more support on media files. like WMA, and Divx.

by Eclipze_ - 2007-09-24 08:46
» I think your looking at it wrong

What they mean is its not ONLY meant for gaming but for media too. I really dont see a problem with having both. Would you rather have PS3 as a gaming machine and loose half the features it has now or keep both and let it be able to do more? (Its better to have more then less)

For kaden saying there is no third direction your wrong cause believe it or not the PS3 already chose that path.

And for the Mleep, this november theres gonna be a hell of a lot of games:

11/01 - Fifth Phantom Saga

11/01 - The Getaway 3

11/01 - The Outsider

» Re: Vecha and Kaden

First off Kaden you say there is no third direction.. uhh well obviously there is cause the PS3's been on that road since day 1.

Vecha I dont think you see the future of gaming. The 360 is meant only for playing games maybe but not the ps3. The future I see is being able to do more then just play games on a gaming console just like a cell phone now isnt meant only for making phone calls. If you want games, this november I think you'll be happy. And Its not just a GAMING MACHINE or Not, And I think the PS3 is a perfect example of that. And QJ's acting like gamespot with the "[...]" 5hit.

by Eclipze_ - 2007-09-24 09:03
» Lol.. not so imaginary huh?

Haze, Unreal Tournament III, Blacksite area 51, Call of duty 4:Modern Warfare, Army of two, Assassin's Creed, Beowulf, Half Life 2: The Orange Box, Kane and Lynch: Dead Men, Medal of Honor Airborne, Rock Band, Uncharted, The Getaway

Pshh.. If you cant find one game you think is crazy good you gotta be smoking some bad dope pplz. I think you need to do your research before you say some dumbas5 kinda stuff.

» Segggggaaaaa!!!!

does anyone know what the best sonic game to-be released will be ? they have so many new sonic games coming out its hard to pick.

by ackeejag - 2007-09-24 12:47
» ?

im not sure if that was a stab at sony losing its place as a console maker or a sincere request. if its the first i doubt that would happen since sony does more than just makes games. they can handle a lot more loss than sega could. for the second i have no idea >_

by theTick197 - 2007-09-24 14:53
» I agree with Vecha on this one

They need to get their act together and actually release what they are talking about. I bought the ps3 to be a game system, not a media hub. I have my modded xbox 1 for that (XBMC Rules!) I think if they want a system seller, all they have to do is make the RSX fully available in linux. Then i could play nexuiz and tremulous on it along with some other great open source games. Ah, but alas, it is not to be...

» To Vecha and kaden

Since when did the whole world and SONY give you the permission to decide for the billions of people out there that it is a gaming machine or a media hub only......I personally don't care if you are an xbot and therefore hate PS3 to death.......

YOU SHOULD KEEP YOUR FILTHty A$$ SHUT about what PEOPLE should do to make you happy and to benefit M$ which has already loss over 3 billion because their system is so old fashion the minute the PS3 came out. SO FOR THE RECORD SONY PUT ALL THOSE FUNCTIONS INTO THE PS3 BECAUSE THEY CARE ABOUT THE CUSTOMERS AND ALLOWS ANY KIND OF ENTERTAINMENT USERS TO USE IT AS THEY SEE FIT.......I KNOW YOU ARE JEALOUS THAT THE XBOT DON'T HAVE IT. AND IT'S NO WALK THROUGH THE PARK TO GIVE THE PS3 ALL THOSE FUNCTIONS. IF YOU THINK M$ CARES ABOUT THEIR BOTS SO MUCH WHY DON'T YOU ASK THEM FOR IT...BUT I BET YOU WILL GET SLAP IN TH NUTS FOR ASKIN M$ THAT. YOU ARE LUCKY THIS IS AN ONLINE BLOG IF SOMEONE WERE TO TELL ME I SHOULD ONLY USE MY PS3 FOR GAMING OR BLU-RAY ONLY AND JUST CHOOSE AND STICK TO ONE............I'LL PUNCH THEIR RABBIT TEETH OUT...YOU DON'T SEE PS3 FANS POPPING OUT AT THE XBOT SITES AND TELL THEM THEY SHOULD ONLY USE IT FOR WATCHING OLD FASHION DVDS ONLY OR GAMING ONLY...EVERY PS3 FANS THAT KNOWS THAT A SUPERIOR SYSTEM MUST BE ABLE TO DO MANY THINGS AND BECAUSE SONY OFFERS THAT TO THEIR LOYAL FANS..........WE WILL BY ALL MEANS USE IT IN ANY WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM WE SEE FIT. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND GO LIE OUT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FREEWAY BEFORE ANGRY PS3 MULTIFUNCTION USERS COME LOOKING FOR YOU.

by arishay - 2007-09-25 06:52
» It's an Entertainment System.

First of all, I remember back to the day of the Nintendo. Yes, the original Nintendo Entertainment System. It didn't play music, or movies, or your TV shows. It played retro graphics with a bit count to make the Sega Game Gear laugh. You had to blow the bottom out of the cartridge just to get it to load and even then it was troublesome. Now we jump into the future and we have these high-tech systems titled Sony PS3 and Microsoft XB360. The only thing the public seems to have totally blindsided was the idea behind the console being in its name. A Playstation? Separate the words: Play, Station. Yes, we have a station that plays. What does it play? Well, if its not specified then i'm going to assume anything. Microsoft XBOX 360? Well, hell I don't even know what the 360 is for. But the X in XBOX was meant that it was supposed to be an entertainment hub. So really its an Entertainment Hub Box 360. They could have just called it an XBOX2. Maybe they figured the marketing would fail because sony's already on their 3rd console its its only microsofts 2nd? Honestly I don't know. It is clear though that you are all arguing the fact that its a gaming system. Really, where in the title of the system does it specify that its only for playing video games? I'm pretty sure they are both open ended. I'm pretty sure it's right in front of your face everytime you turn it on.

by Morbidly - 2007-09-25 07:24
» ya right

TLDR^^^^^

by Stealth! - 2007-09-25 12:15
» @ Vecha and Kaden

Right, news flash morons PS3 is doing very good no great, they already have more sales in 9 months than PS2 and PS1 combined in there first 9 months into its life. The fact that there's 5.5+ million sales worldwide proves that people are buying the system. You xbots wouldn't understand anything.

Besides the fact your using they are losing money ok lets play that:

Sony has lost current date 350 million dollars from PS3 while MS has lost more than 2 billion dollars from the 360 issues, and lost 6 billions in 6 years into its life with xbox. So basically sony hasn't lost that much compared to its rival MS.

So please stop thinking you know anything at all, oh did i mention sony sold some of their shars and got back 4 billion dollars to spend on games and hardware so in actuality Sony hasn't lost money they got back what they lost and more.
