TGS 2007: Phil Harrison talks on PS3's future |
Listed in: PS3 Tags: Phil Harrison, SCEE, SCEI, Sony
Sony's "sticking to their guns" and marshaling its forces for the big holiday season, which Phil Harrison discusses in an interview during the Tokyo Game show. In the interview he gives a broad idea of what Sony's planning for the future. Harrison, big boss down at SCEE and SCEI, explains during the interview that Sony is planning a big move during the holiday season, as is all the console companies.
Harrison explains that a price cut alone wouldn't cut it for the masses at large. The price cut would radiate through the gaming industry, but it would take a longer amount of time for it to appeal to a broader mass market. For their part, Sony will push on marketing the PlayStation 3's functions as an all-in-one media hub, having media platforms that expand beyond games like Blu-ray movies, networking (via PSN), and music:
This holiday season, weÂ’re going to see a really tremendous lineup of software from us and from third parties and also the increasing importance of Blu-ray disc as a movie format. [...] ItÂ’s not just about running a two-week campaign on TV and then sitting back and waiting for the orders to roll in. ItÂ’s a much more sophisticated beast, coupled with a marketplace which is far more competitive than itÂ’s ever been, not just in the videogame category, but entertainment eyeballs generally. ThereÂ’s web, movie, DVD, Blu-ray, TV, game, music, live [events], sports, travel. These are all our competitors now.
Harrison re-emphasizes Sony's drive to grab the market on a more long term outline, saying that they want to become the "creative [...] and commercial choice" for a development studio. The PlayStation franchise's strength, he explains, doesn't come from a single title but rather from its ability to deliver the "broadest possible range of games":
[...] We just need to stay focused on building the right game content, bringing those to our systems, and then IÂ’m pretty happy that everything else will fall into place. [...] You can see the games that weÂ’re releasing this year and you can jump forward 18 months and imagine what their sequels are going to be like. You can see the games that weÂ’ve got coming out in 2008. Again weÂ’ve got some incredible powerhouse titles. So yeah, weÂ’re just going to stick to our guns.

My god sony. So who's buying your system? Gamers or media ethusiasts?...and since you are losing money already...how are you going to get revenue back...if there aren't more GAMERS then others...you need the money made off of overpriced GAMES...its a GAMING MACHINE...or is it not a GAMING MACHINE.

Sorry but without this imaginary game library he is talking about, PS3 isnät gping to be a hot item during Xmas.
2008 is a whole different story though. That's when a lot of people are picking up their PS3's with MGS4, White Knight Story, Tekken 6, DMC 4, GT5, RE 5, Soul Calibur 4, Final Fantasy XIII etc.
But whats coming for Xmas? I can't see anything really. Perhaps Disgaea 3 if it makes it in time. But that's not a whole lot to go on either.

Vecha I dont think you see the future of gaming. The 360 is meant only for playing games maybe but not the ps3. The future I see is being able to do more then just play games on a gaming console just like a cell phone now isnt meant only for making phone calls. If you want games, this november I think you'll be happy. And Its not just a GAMING MACHINE or Not, And I think the PS3 is a perfect example of that. And QJ's acting like gamespot with the "[...]" 5hit.

YOU SHOULD KEEP YOUR FILTHty A$$ SHUT about what PEOPLE should do to make you happy and to benefit M$ which has already loss over 3 billion because their system is so old fashion the minute the PS3 came out. SO FOR THE RECORD SONY PUT ALL THOSE FUNCTIONS INTO THE PS3 BECAUSE THEY CARE ABOUT THE CUSTOMERS AND ALLOWS ANY KIND OF ENTERTAINMENT USERS TO USE IT AS THEY SEE FIT.......I KNOW YOU ARE JEALOUS THAT THE XBOT DON'T HAVE IT. AND IT'S NO WALK THROUGH THE PARK TO GIVE THE PS3 ALL THOSE FUNCTIONS. IF YOU THINK M$ CARES ABOUT THEIR BOTS SO MUCH WHY DON'T YOU ASK THEM FOR IT...BUT I BET YOU WILL GET SLAP IN TH NUTS FOR ASKIN M$ THAT. YOU ARE LUCKY THIS IS AN ONLINE BLOG IF SOMEONE WERE TO TELL ME I SHOULD ONLY USE MY PS3 FOR GAMING OR BLU-RAY ONLY AND JUST CHOOSE AND STICK TO ONE............I'LL PUNCH THEIR RABBIT TEETH OUT...YOU DON'T SEE PS3 FANS POPPING OUT AT THE XBOT SITES AND TELL THEM THEY SHOULD ONLY USE IT FOR WATCHING OLD FASHION DVDS ONLY OR GAMING ONLY...EVERY PS3 FANS THAT KNOWS THAT A SUPERIOR SYSTEM MUST BE ABLE TO DO MANY THINGS AND BECAUSE SONY OFFERS THAT TO THEIR LOYAL FANS..........WE WILL BY ALL MEANS USE IT IN ANY WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM WE SEE FIT. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND GO LIE OUT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FREEWAY BEFORE ANGRY PS3 MULTIFUNCTION USERS COME LOOKING FOR YOU.

Besides the fact your using they are losing money ok lets play that:
Sony has lost current date 350 million dollars from PS3 while MS has lost more than 2 billion dollars from the 360 issues, and lost 6 billions in 6 years into its life with xbox. So basically sony hasn't lost that much compared to its rival MS.
So please stop thinking you know anything at all, oh did i mention sony sold some of their shars and got back 4 billion dollars to spend on games and hardware so in actuality Sony hasn't lost money they got back what they lost and more.
