Tekken 6 "not so high definition"?

Tekken 6 - Image 1

Tekken 6 looks awesome enough in the assets Namco Bandai has released so far, but for HD connoisseurs, there's still the burning question of whether or not the game's console versions really are high def. Pixel counters from Eurogamer's Digital Foundry are saying that it's not quite there yet.

Here's a quick quote from Pixel Foundry's findings:

Analysis of Xbox 360 screens released to date reveals native resolutions of anything from 1280x720, to 1360x768 to full-on 1080p. On the other hand, PS3 assets released so far reveal a disappointing 1024x576 resolution - over 33 per cent of the 720p detail gone, just like that.

The disparity between the available Xbox 360 shots was enough for Digital Foundry to suspect that something was clearly amiss, and based on the preview code we have available, direct HDMI dumps reveal a 1024x576 framebuffer on default settings. All of which sounds like another cross-format catastrophe, but the reality is somewhat more intriguing and, at the same time, rather bizarre.

I'm no master of the intricacies of high definition video, so a lot of the technobabble in the report just plain went over my head. The "bizarre" part they talk about is rather interesting, though: with just one option tweak you can push the game's Xbox 360 version up in excess of 1280x720, but it ends up less detailed.

It's also worth noting that most of Pixel Foundry's analysis were done with the Xbox 360 version. They also mention that Tekken 6 is an arcade game running on PlayStation 3 hardware, which could probably translate into higher performance on the Sony platform. Probably. You can find out more at the source.

Considering we have other games that leave Tekken 6 in the dust visually that run at 720 and 1080i/p natively, I don't see why the resolution thing is still a problem. The game hasn't even gone gold yet, so I don't think anyone should be worried right now.

What games leave Tekken 6 in the dust?

What games leave Tekken 6 in the dust?

---------

Maybe Super Street Fighter 4 :)

» Actually, the "bizarre" part makes sense

The lower the resolution, the higher the frame rate.

Raise the resolution and the frame rate drops as the number of pixels being processed increases.

The solution to this would be dropping the detail in higher resolutions so as to maintain the higher frame rate.

Killzone 2?

MGS4 and Uncharted.

I think the game becoming multi platform is the cause of the graphic discrepencies. They never look as good as exclusive games (most of the time)

and uh I'd hope that SSF4 would leave thi game in the dust considering they had to re-release the game with "Super" in front of the title. They should atleast make a DLC version of it for original SF4 buyers instead of a discount.

IMO though Tekken has always been the better fighting game around.

» I've always liked Soul Calibur games myself but....

This gen Soul Calibur is somewhat lackluster. The graphics and game play is pretty cool but the game doesn't have much to offer in single player mode like past games have had.

This is obvious, but there's no reason they can't run the game at native 720p at full 60fps on PS3.

» oh my god

street fighter 4 SUCKS

honestly

they really couldnt make it 3-d yet

this 2d stuff is getting old

» PS3 sucks

Another game watered down for the sake of the PS3. They should have just made it a 360 exclusive so we wouldn't have to suffer from the competition's inferior product.

i guess he didnt read the full article. "They also mention that Tekken 6 is an arcade game running on PlayStation 3 hardware, which could probably translate into higher performance on the Sony platform. Probably. You can find out more at the source." You dumb piece of *****.

Also, who cares if uncharted, or kz2, or mgs4 look better. its a fighting game, the most important part is the controls.

» Mmm

I don't think we can judge anything until the actual PS3 version of the game is run on the PS3. I think it's more impressive that the PS3 can run a version of the game which wasn't necessarily designed for the hardware used but that's just my opinion.

Tekken games have always been pretty looking games but you've got to be an idiot to care about the graphics with Tekken. As long as it runs smooth with no frame rate drops then the graphics don't matter.

by hammered - 2009-10-04 05:46
» mmhmm

all i care for now is that it runs smooth no gittering or lag and has awesome controls like the rest of the tekken games :)

got the release date marked on my calendar...waited too long for this game

Sublime is just a below-average troll with no class. He makes it too obvious he's trying to piss people off, and that's why he has no real friends or e-friends. No class.

Anyway, the reason why we *care* that those games look better is because they're proof that at this point, the devs are too busy playing WoW to optimize the game more. If you can get a game like KZ2 running at a locked 30fps with no framerate drops at a native 720p/1080i, and then this game which looks OKAY at best, runs at a sub-HD res, something's not right.

Umm, SF IV is "3-D".

Sure there is no 3-D movement but most if not all of the gameplay is rendered in 3-D.

Also if you read the whole article they compare the 576p with motion blur on and the higher resolution one, which needs motion blur off.

The post processing on the 576p image actually makes it look slightly better in the end.

by Aces In The Palm - 2009-10-05 03:05
» well

to me

thats makes it a 2D game

street fighter needs to evolve like the rest of the fighters.

tekken will always be better than street fighter hands down, no contest.

mortal kombat has been 3D since MK4.

and even that blows street fighter out of the water.

by GUNBEHINDTHESUN - 2009-10-05 06:44
» I can care less about motion blur

I like to see the detail and I don't like the idea of motion blur in the first place as it actually hides what is really happening. If the game is at least 30 frames per second then that is just fine for a game like this.

» Looking at the images...

I probably would not notice that it's below 720p (on PS3), I think it looks great. However, I think overall, the graphics are not leaps and bounds above Tekken 5 DR Online! Textures are a bit better, but that's about it. I will probably buy anyway, but really, I think Namco could have done better with its flagship game. I hope they don't start doing a Tony Hawks type thing where a new game comes each year, with less and less quality, and with more and more gimmicks...
