Not everyone seems to be absolutely gung-ho about the motion control technology debuted by Microsoft and Sony at this year's E3 event. Tecmo Koei president Kenji Matsubara is one of those who carries certain "concerns" about the efficiency of the said controls to games.

Said Matsubara:

We are very excited about the future with Project Natal and Sony's motion controllers. At the same time, we have some concerns over the fact that we specialize in making action games, so we have to explore whether we can achieve real-time response from a controller-free system.

Characterizing the motion-based, controller-free technology in Natal and the PS3's Motion Controller as being more for casual gamers, he further explained:

We understand that, for casual gamers playing dance games or some sort of fishing game, this controller-free system can be popular. But for hardcore gamers who like actions games, we have to research and develop games that satisfy our core gamers.

I expect that, from the beginning, both these types of controls will be more suited to casual games, and later go into more hardcore oriented experiences. That's how, in my understanding, most companies' strategies will apply.

Sounds to me that he is more concerned with Natal as he mentioned controller free system twice. Sony already demoed first person controls with their device and with a little imagination I can see some pretty kick ass games being made with that setup. Not that Natal couldn't do hardcore games, there will probably be some, but I just don't see how they'll be able to pull off the same level of control and accuracy as the Playstation motion controller. I bet Natal based games will be mostly casual and PMC games will be casual, hardcore and everything in-between.

» how so

sony's tech is a mixture of 2 different approaches, which both (atm) are being used heavily for novel casual games...

adding apples to apples doesn't give you oranges...

the challenge is finding a way of interacting with the character, but environment as well. talking to npcs, traversing a landscape, flying a helicopter in a sandbox game, etc... how do you do that simply and effectively enough to not frustrate the hell out of the user.

it's just a learning curve all will face... revolutions are always bloody, so i expect many casualties. for example LAIR, using the motion controls on that was suicide at first, and they fixed it.

Sony's motion controller is essentialy a better version of the wiimote and video motion controlls (such as with eyetoy and natal), and i do see potential in which sony's motion controller specificaly could be used to do hardcore games, and i really do think that is what they were trying to push and show developers during the E3 demo, talking about a rpg like fantasy game with casting spells, ect, fps games, the weapon games, and a large multitude of other things that are possible with the acuracy of the controller. I think that sony sees what happened with the wii in that most of the games for it are simply novelties, minigames, and hasnt been friendly so much for the hardcore audience, sony imo has always tried to appeal to the hardcore gamer first, and has options for more casusual gamers and family gamers, etc, but have a fairly good understanding of how to even it out.

Honestly in my view natal just seems like it will be similar to the eyetoy, which had no hardcore games what so ever, it would probably be to difficult to anyways, but kudos to them if they can pull it off, another note with the sony motion controller, i know it has a few buttons, but as of now does it have any sort of analog controll like with the wiimote? casue if it dont... then we screwed for sure

I see so much more potential in Sony's motion controller with the demo you can see that like the bow and arrow and the gun shooting.. could very well be towards action and rpg's like what you said (wolf3ax). I can't wait to see what dev's are going to do with this

and natal looks very wii'ish to me so I can't see to much out of tha
