Tanaka confirms MMO for 360 and Vista (and possibly PS3)

Square Enix - Image 1This one goes way back. We have to untangle a lot of weeds here, so bear with us. During the first part of 2006, around March and April, there were rumors about a new Square Enix MMO as well as rumors about Final Fantasy XI and Final Fantasy VII. A lot has changed for the FF titles but regarding the MMO one, it seems that things are still pushing forward as planned.

Director and Executive Producer Hiromichi Tanaka was recently interviewed by gaming site Pro-G about the DS version of Final Fantasy III. We were quite excited about the interview but you all know how those go: game features, details, developments, and stuff. But toward the end of the discussion, something glimmered and caught our attention.

Accordingly, Pro-G asked Tanaka regarding his and Square Enix's future plans. Wonder what his response was? All smiles, the game director stated, "I'm still working on XI as it's on-going but we are also working on a next-generation MMORPG for 360 and Vista but PS3 is a possibility."

Wait, hold on. An MMO between Xbox 360 users and Vista is not entirely new as Microsoft has revealed this already in the past. But a PS3 and Vista MMO? Now, that is something. And honestly, we can't imagine PS3 users meeting with Xbox 360 players in a virtual environment.

Nope, we really can't picture the two meeting. But we most can certainly imagine them fight. This is going to be good.

PS3 and vista wont be a problem since the PS2 and Vista can already share FFXI.

Nothing different.

"PS3 users meeting with Xbox 360 players in a virtual environment."

Ummm FFXI alrdy runs on Vista.... and PC, PS2, and 360 players play in the same world... so what would be so different about this??

by andreo - 2007-02-08 10:21
» No big deal

The 360, PC, and PS2 are playing FFXI on the same servers right now. Heck, if you have the HDD file tool for the PS3 then the PS3 can be playing on those servers also since you can load FFXI on the PS3 as of a couple of updates ago.

A couple of years ago, this would have been unheard of. But today. No biggie.

yea Ryan A., get with it. Smart developers know how to suck every last penny out of a title =)

Everything depends on whether Square uses Live Anywhere (MS platform integration API) or uses their own MMO online code. I'm pretty sure they will use there own, however it is strange they mentioned "Vista" instead of Windows. Only Vista will support Live Anywhere. If Square build the cross platform functionality instead of using Live Anywhere, the gold Xbox Live subscription wont include access to this game. There will be a separate fee charge by Square, but you wont need a paid Xbox Live membership to join.

Interesting news indeed.

Microsoft cant do anything if SE decides to allow PS3 and Vista users to play an MMO together.

If they incorporate Live Anywhere with their new MMORPG, then they have to make it work on the PS3 as well, since microsoft cant do anything about it, since they pretty much dont license the live anywhere service and leave it open, SE is free to do whatever they want to.

Not much power behind anything you say for someone who isn't even registered.

If I cared about what people thought about what I post, then I would be you, someone who wont post anything worth it at all.

» Uh

But that's what you do

by cgfn - 2007-02-08 14:21
» Who cares?

FFXI is horrid, I am not anticipating another MMO from Square.

by Your wrong - 2007-02-08 17:09
» Not The Same Game

I'm not so sure this is the same game as I think this new mmo they are refering to is in the Final Fantasy series while you are refering to something that has been in development nearly 3 years now.

Live Anywhere is hosted on MS servers, so it wont give PS3 gamers access, EVER. Could be why the PS3 version is a maybe. Might be deciding whether to use Live Anywhere or not. Live Anywhere makes development a lot easier, a lot cheaper, and MS host and maintain the servers to future reduce the cost. The 360 is going to enjoy a wealth of cross platform titles in the future because of it.

FFXI is horrid if you SUCK... get high enough level before we care about what you have to say.

by mantiz - 2007-02-08 19:49
» dude

word XI is the best mmorpg ever period implayin it on my ps3 right now with someone on 360 ***** QJ dont you do a tech blog think youd know what your talkin about

by cgfn - 2007-02-08 20:00
» Uh no, not really

Ah yes, the classic "you think the game sucks because you suck at it" thing. Getting a high level does not make a game good, gameplay mainly does, and to a lesser extent graphics, and FFXI lacks sorely in both departments.

I don't have to suck at a game to know it sucks, get a clue.

BTW who's "we"? You make it sound like somebody cares what you have to say. Trust me, they don't.

by cgfn - 2007-02-08 20:10
» My bad

I meant I don't have to be GOOD at a game to know it sucks. Which FFXI does.

WoW is also highly overrated

by zeromatrix75 - 2007-02-09 05:34
» cgfn is right

I know its just an opinion. But Xl is the only ff game i didnt like.
