Take-Two Interactive reveals Grand Theft Auto IV launch records - Image 1The parent company of Rockstar North has finally released their official statement regarding the details on the launch record of Grand Theft Auto 4 (PS3 and Xbox 360). The press release they sent out was able to confirm some the things that we reported earlier.

On the game's first week, it was able to sell about six million units globally with an estimated value of about US$ 500 million. What's even more surprising is that GTA 4 was able to sell 3.6 million units on its first day with a total retail value of about US$ 310 million globally.

This is certainly something that can wow people. Even though there were obstacles that seemed to block the way of the game (read: EA's attempted take-over and game delays), things pushed through successfully.

Strauss Zelnick, Take-Two's Chairman, remarked on the company's success, saying,

We knew Grand Theft Auto 4 would break new ground in terms of the player's experience, with its compelling story line, extraordinary gameplay and action that ranges over a broad urban canvas. Now, it has broken sales and rating records as well.

Grand Theft Auto 4's first week performance represents the largest launch in the history of interactive entertainment, and we believe these retail sales levels surpass any movie or music launch to date. We congratulate the entire Rockstar team on creating a must-have experience that takes the legendary Grand Theft Auto franchise to a new level.

» Congrats

Congratulations Rockstar, you deserve it!

Now, mark that baby 20% off so I can buy it.

Warhawk still rules.

(For those of you wondering, I'm not a teenager)

» Nah

Nah, I didn't wonder if you're a teenager, but I do wonder if you're RETARDED.

Games have been $60 since the beginning of the 360 life cycle, if you can't afford the game, how is that Take 2's problem?

As much as GameStop gets flack here I probably shouldn't say this but if you can't afford $60 then go trade your games in to GameStop, that's what I did. They'll even give you 20% more on your game values (which will be worth it if you didn't give them old games like Madden 01).

Warhawk's a solid game but tell me - why would you pay $399 - $599 to play ONLY Warhawk and watch blu-ray movies???

..i HATE fanboys...ssoOOOoOOOoOOOo o much, jst play your damn game on whichever system you own....

» Fanboyism aside

Congratulations Rockstar and Take Two.

I don't mean to bring the game down, but Halo 3 didn't deserve this record. I know the GTA hype played into this, but IV a game that really pushes the boundary (when Halo was coming out, Crysis was just around the corner).

I don't normally play into fanboyism, but let me list the games I own for PS3 just to clear things up for ArcaneView:

Resistance, Uncharted: Drakes Fortune, Heavenly Sword, Folklore, Warhawk, Gran Turismo Prologue, and Grand Theft Auto IV. In other words, I have not put my PS3 controller down since August when Warhawk was released.

I don't think he was saying he bought a PS3 just for Warhawk. It's just his current favorite and it can keep him busy until he gets GTA.

Pretty much like me saying GTA and Rock Band rule. I didn't buy my console just for those two games but they are the ones I keep going back to and I find tons of fun

» WTF!?!?!?!?!

Holy crap!!!! That's awesome.

Personaly, I hated it. Nothing new.

However, that's a very impressive start. I wonder how much of it is simply because of content???

» nothing new?

you must be joking, but your entitled to your opinion no matter how wrong it is.

I don't care if he plays PS3 or 360, it's just that he's not broadening his horizon of gaming... Warhawk has been out since what, April of last year?

I don't understand why people play the same game over an over again... Since then Uncharted has come out, Unreal Tournament 3, Ratchet and Clank Future, and Half Life Orange Box, I mean, it's like a 360 fanboy that says "Halo 2 rules" (because they never would make that comment on Halo 3), it's like, play something else already okay? Geesh..

by ArcaneView - 2008-05-08 13:56
» Sorry

I didn't realize it came off fanboyish really, I was just saying that he should play something else besides Warhawk.

The PS3 *MAY* have fewer titles than PS3 but that doesn't mean it's short great games by any means. It's exclusives line up is as good if not better than the 360's.

I just didn't like how aggressive you had to be to keep your rank in Warhawk, if I wanted to play the same game for months on end I'd play World of Warcraft (at least I can sell my character from that just to make up all the lost time/money).

I meant to say "The PS3 *MAY* have fewer titles than 360 but..."

Long week, sorry all.

» oh and

i just beat the game, (got it on launch day) and i have to tell you, the story is amazing,

» cool!

I hope it's gonna pass on TV, this would make a strong ad for them.

"On the news tonight: A game sells more in a week that any other kind of media did in the past, including the movies and musics" lol

The videogame market is breaking the movie market. Now they pop less games based on movies than movies based on games, lol.

by ArcaneView - 2008-05-08 14:19
» Ha

Yeah but moves Uwe Boll makes don't count since they all suck. I love how he got owned by Activision Blizzard by getting turned down for making the World of Warcraft movie.

If only they would make good movies off of old storylines. Like I would love to see a Lufia movie or a movie based off of Blaster Master. The gaming industry was so young then, it could work.

I doubt any game will go down for its 60 dollar price tag. But i got gta4 for $ 55 at sams club. Its only 5 dollars off, but if you look around there may be deals on certain games. Circuit city was selling gta4 with a $20 dollar circuit city card. Just look around where you live and u might find a deal.
