Stringer: close to 800,000 sell-through of PS3 in Europe

In a statement to journalists during the global premiere of "Spiderman 3" in Tokyo, Sony Corp. CEO Howard Stringer says that he thinks Sony Europe's "close to an 800,000 sell-though" of PS3 units, and rescued the console from the post-Japanese launch "perception wars", the Financial Times reports.

"We came into the [European] market with more games and perhaps we lived up to the expectations in Europe in a way that perhaps we didn't in Japan."

Financial Times also cites Goldman Sachs analyst Yuji Fujimori, who believes that by the March quarter of 2008, Sony "will start making money" on the PS3 (perhaps he meant profit per unit sold, as opposed to loss?). He also believes that towards the long-term, the PS3 will capture 50% of the market within three years - 30% "in the short term."

LOL KEEP DREAMING, the ones that bought the PS3 on release were the hardcore fans and now sales have dropped dramatically in Europe.

I like the way he says HE THINKS they have sold etc but not they HAVE sold.

Japan sales this week for the PS3 Down to -

15,203 (-14%)

Compare to the Wiis

49,982 (+5%)

If this carrys on dropping the PS3 will be in serious trouble in Japan to.

It will be a cold day in hell before the PS3 has 50% of the market. I mean, how is that even possible?

These "analysts" know nothing about gamers or gaming and are paid by sony to give optimistic news to investors.

800,000 consoles sold in Europe is a grossly inflated number. But only Microsoft does that, right?

The PS3 sold a confirmed 600,000 on the first week, confirmed by a third party so why is 200,000 more after a few more weeks so hard to believe?

The PS3 is doing just fine in Japan, sure the Wii is doing better at the moment, and rightfully so, but the PS3 is hardly in trouble. I noticed you didn't list the 360s sales for the same week, now why is that?

I can see the Wii taking top spot by the end of the year, and the 360 slipping to 3rd by halfway thru 2008.

as he said it's just "close to 800,000 sell-through"... it's a nice round number to throw at the press... it's a Spiderman premiere i don't think he came prepared with the exact PS3 sales figures... and obviously no one here could claim that they know more about the sales figures over the CEO himself and these people don't just throw around numbers cause they tend to take care regarding things that they say in puclic cause this might end up embarassing himself and the company... ... but it's not hard to believe this number as Don Quixote said... next week the PS3 will be just one month old over there so i don't think the numbers, if to be believed, is disappointing at all...

regarding the 50%... it's just showing that people have high expectations for the PS3 and the console indeed has potential... ain't saying that it's going to meet the expectations... it's just good to know that people believe in the product to be confident enough to declare expectations and forecasts that may seem unrealistic to some.

Actually, this is the same guy that thought the PS3 launch in Europe was in april. With sony's famous communication problems among CEOs, who knows if he's right?

Anyway, a 30% market share in 3 years is at least possible, although still highly unlikely. 50% is completely unrealistic.
