Challenge rooms have been a staple aspect of the God of War games. In God of War III, they might even prove to play an important part in keeping the game fresh through DLC.

Speaking with GamePro, God of War III director Stig Asmussen mused that downloadable challenge rooms are a good way to keep the series going, and while the game will ship with challenges on-disc, a downloadable pack is not out of the question.

Asmussen also said that the game's new mechanics lend themselves well to different challenges. One example he uses takes into account the fact that you can now ride creatures:

For example, now that you have creatures you can ride, maybe we'll put in a challenge where in a certain amount of time you have to get on a Cyclops and kill a certain number of enemies in a certain amount of time. Or, maybe you have to use the Cyclops to get through a certain type of hazard or area or something like that.

These challenges are usually done late in development, however, and Asmussen noted that everything is still in the planning phase at the moment. Still, ideas are on the board so we could be hearing more about them in the next couple of months.

The game does ship with challenges on the disc. They are THINKING about adding new challenges as DLC. You will have challenges to begin with. Doesn't look like a nickel and dime job to me.
