Here's one of the potentially great games that has left a lot of us in the dark. Details are scarce, no scans nor screenshots floating around, none of the Digital Extremes people even risked a teeny leak. But now, we finally score some details on Dark Sector (Xbox360, PS3) and the alleged concept changes they'll be making in the game.

Storyline: Contrary to our earlier reports, Haden Tenno, the protagonist, is not an FBI agent. Rather, he is an assassin hired by an American government agency to look into "strange happenings" in Balkin, Lasria. Upon starting the game, you'll discover that Dark Sector is a codename for a bioengineering experiment at Lotus Complex. The catch: the experiments go awry and bad as a virus capable of morphing humans and animals to monsters spreads throughout the city.

Haden's job is to seek out the sinister scientists responsible for unleashing the virus, but eventually he gets infected by the virus himself. But instead of turning into a partially metallic lifeform suffering in pain, as most of the infected organisms become, Haden is able to control the virus because of an unprecedented formation of Familial Dysautonmia -- a genetic defect that makes him unable to feel pain.

Weapons/powers/abilities: Steve Sinclair, the game's director, says that one of the most (if not the most) important weapons at Haden's disposal is the so-called "mag disc". As Sinclair himself puts it, "If we f*ck this up, then we've lost everything." So what's the deal with this mag disc, you ask? It's basically a three-bladed throwing weapon that forms in Haden's hand. So yes, right from the beginning, you'll be donning the mag disc to grab objects, dismember your enemies, etc.

Setting and Animation: Sinclair says that they have made "considerable" changes in the game's setting because "the thing that we kept hearing from people was realism...realism, and natural environments, and plausibility." So, what they've done was make the animation more realistic as well, to blend in with the realistic setting. The realism in animations is seen especially in the way Haden handles his weapons.

An example that Sinclair gives is the mag disc, which Haden will be hesitant to use at the start of the game. But as the game progresses and the more you use the mag disc, your attacks and animations will be faster and more fluid. The fights with the bosses will also let you pick up on new abilities -- one of which is the ability to create shields by using your mag disc to block enemy attacks.

Aside from these, Sinclair didn't divulge any more information about this sci-fi FPS. Will it have a multiplayer mode? What are the other weapons? Who are the important characters? Will the 360 version have anything for Xbox Live? How good will it look on the PS3? We're sure you have a lot of questions too, but Digital Extremes promises that more details will be revealed and brought to light soon. And when they do, you can expect we'll be updating you guys too, so stay tuned for more details.

# This Is Not A Resident Evil Ripoff.CHUCKINGROCKSATSPACESHIPS 2006-10-29 10:26
There were other games released even before resident evil that use some of the same themes. I personally have been looking forward to see what Dark Sector is all about. I remember a glimps of it a couple of years ago and it got me exited then. I just hope its a great game.
