To say that things just heated up could be an understatement. It's just been confirmed in the latest issue of EGM that the WipEout title revving up for the PS3 will be using the same game engine as MotorStorm. While this bit of news might not be that big a deal for some, others might find it a bit interesting.
This new development is directly related to both games. Now that we know that they're going to use the same engine, it could pose a potential (and critical) influence to how the games would eventually look and feel. As PSXExtreme sums it up:
The WipEout franchise has always relied on ultra-fast and silky-smooth gameplay with a flawless frame rate, and nothing less will be accepted by fans in the new generation. So the real question is, how will MotorStorm look?
True. On one end of the spectrum, you've got all the dirt and grit that's been shoved down our throats via dozens of screens and videos. The other end has the techno-sleek, neon light streaked racer we've grown used to in previous WipEout titles. While MotorStorm hasn't been released yet (in the U.S. and Europe, at least), we've yet to really see its final version that'd be hitting retail shelves come March. So, just how good will it really look like?
No, no. We're not saying that the final version of MotorStorm will have hovercrafts and flying cars (although that's theoretically possible by driving over the cliff edge). And neither are we saying that the future WipEout PS3 title will have a course that'll run you through muddy canyons riddled with wires and neon lights (although, that could pose as an interesting race track).
What we (and PSXExtreme) are trying to point out is that we're expecting both games better have this "flawless frame rate" and "ultra-fast, silky-smooth gameplay." That's what the Cell Processor's for, silly.

This new version was specifically optimized to use all seven of the SPUs on the PS3 efficiently, so no doubt the engine upgrade for WipEout will be fantastic.

If they can't, then they should have made a new engine for it...
