Watched the trailer to BioShock 2: Sea of Dreams yet? You should. It certainly gave us a lot to speculate on. Now speculate on this: a developer from 2K revealed that BioShock 2 is a prequel, but at the same time is a sequel. Think, think, think. Here's the quote from 2K Marin Developer Charles Shechbeck:

BioShock 2: Sea of Dreams is part of a prequel and at the same time is a sequel, so youÂ’re kind of close on the interpretation of the trailer. The rising replica of Rapture can represent something to do with this or something part of a bigger surprise that everyone has to wait and see to play.

So we know that the sequel occurs after the events of the first BioShock, since we see a Little Sister has hit puberty. I assume it's a Little Sister since she has a little Big Daddy doll (LittleBigDaddy?). Besides, who else could it be? Then we see the skyline of Rapture rising out of the sands, so we know the city is still a part of the story.

Thoughts? Here's the trailer again for you, see if it gives you any ideas:

» Rampant Speculation

Here is what I see for Bioshock 2 from the trailer (also, there maybe spoilers in my speculation...nothing outright revealing but it may be subtle); those sand castles that rise up at the end of the teaser leads me to believe that number 2 will deal with the rise of Rapture; and because the girl in the teaser looks to be in her teen years - and from what I can gather is most likely a little sister - I'm willing to bet that the rise of Rapture I suggested takes place after Jack (the first game's character) has left. That may seem obvious but many believed that Bioshock 2 would be a prequel. I also am guessing that you may play as a girl (though that's not an idea I got from the trailer, its actually the first thought I had when Bioshock 2 was announced...).

The Rise of Rapture idea I suggested may also play a big role in the "moral choices" of the game, sort of replacing the Save/Harvest mechanic of the first title - do you do your best to follow Andrew Ryan's original plan and rebuild the perfect utopia? Or, do you go with Frank Fontain's vision and build the new Rapture around yourself? I doubt that you will be the same character, though the endings of the first one was ambiguous enough to support Jack returning to Rapture but they may contradict themselves because what happens if you got the bad ending in the first but tried to be good in the second....? Also, I think that the little sisters will still be involved morally but not in the same way as the first; I see them as being teenagers that are beginning to miss Rapture in someway, or are being called back by something, hence the "Sea of Dreams" subtitle - this also makes me thing that the game will begin on land, where we will perhaps see an alternate history where these utopian societies are a big thing. And if you play as a girl like I suggested than it would only make sense for you to play as a little sister and you are seeing this world for the first time, which could add some extra psychological aspects to the second game (not that the first didn't have its fare share). This new world could seem twisted and dark and could really be a disturbing place, and then as you start to get used to the land above the sea you begin to have dreams calling you back to Rapture....

Of course this is all speculation, and perhaps I'm digging to deep....but I'm positive about the Rise of Rapture idea, those castles of sand were not to subtle; but perhaps this is a prequel and that girl is Tenambulm and she is about to go to rapture for the first time.

» nice thoughts.

I see nothing amiss in your speculations.

I think that in a prequel area we could learn more of the Big Daddy role and relationship to the little sisters. The story depth has almost unlimited possibilities and the sea of dreams as a reference "to return to" could well be the area in which we have the ability to recreate the Utopian world and hopefully avoid the mistakes previously made. I recently played Bioshock right through again after reading this released article and I paid attention to how incredible the world was before its citizens got out of hand. Most areas and facilities were quite magnificent and many areas were pure luxury before the madness took over. Maybe we need to find out what happened and try to put it right. This would of course mean that there could be a possibilty of multiple endings?

I like your reference to the fact that a possible role would be as a girl (child). This fits into the ending of the first game where the sisters are saved and one of the final frames was of a hand with a ring. The dream could relate to the children of the saved and now adult little sisters who through their dreams are compelled to return.

» easy

the story will now revolve in the creation and fall of Rapture the underwater city. its titled bioshock hence the sequel but the plot will occur before the story of bioshock 1.

Those writers of Bioshock are *****ing awsome, they know how to make an excellent story, tease you and write a probably amazing sequal/prequal at the same time! And to FOURTHxSURVIVOR I like your ideas, especially the girl being a young Tenambulm. I hope Bioshock 2 is a exclusive to the 360 for a year at least.

» My thoughts

I would be willing to suggest that the game begins after the events of the first game, and through some turn of events involving time travel (far-fetched for the time period?), the main character tries to prevent the fall of Rapture in the first place.

It's a little bit of a wild idea, but would fit with being both a sequel and prequel.
