Standing ovation: PS3 users significantly aiding the Folding@Home effort |
Ó
Pop the champagne and try out some bubbly. Thanks to the goodwill and free time of PS3 users, it seems as if the folks at Stanford have a lot to celebrate, what with the overwhelming turnout of Folding@Home after the release of Sony's 1.60 firmware update.
What do you have to celebrate? Well, in addition to having over 250,000 new members in the Folding@Home community thanks to the PS3, there has also been a significant increase in the processing power. According to a press release they forwarded to games sites, "PS3 users are delivering nearly 400 teraflops, achieving a total computing power of over 700 teraflops at a single moment. This is more than double the computing capacity of the network before PS3 joined the program."
Even more importantly, they've also managed to convert even more people to the cause of Folding@Home. The significant exposure brought about by the PS3 to Folding@Home has also increased the number of PCs using the program by 20 percent. That's definitely something to be happy about.
In the meantime, if you're a new owner, or have yet to actually join Folding@Home, why not be a part of the QJ Folding Community? As an earlier post of ours mentioned:
Once you've launched the Folding@Home program, just press the triangle button to bring up the Options panel, select "Identity", and then select "Join an existing team". After that, just enter QJ.Net's team number (It's 52781) and, voila! You're now a part of QJ.Net's Folding@Home team.
Congratulations, guys and gals. You're doing a great service for mankind, and that's definitely something to be proud about!

lol No games to play ps3 ppl o well never mine
you mite see a good game in 3 mths or so or not
Yup the games right now are *****, but when final fantasy, metal gear and killzone come out, it will be by far the best console..
Cant you do this under a different post guys...this isnt about trash talking.
I'm happy to be a part of QJ's F@H team. I never even heard of F@H before the announcement that the PS3 was getting it. The teams rank has rocketed up since I joined a little while after the update. Team rank is now 348 out of over 60 thousand teams. That is pretty impressive. Nice job everyone. I plan on folding as long and as much as I can afford to. Remember, it may be your rear end that benefits from this down the road.
.A.J.
Its a shame they don't have Seti@Home, I've been doing that one for... Geeze years. I know, it's not saving lives, but I must say it's still pretty cool.
i own a ps3, and there are NO good games out so stfu.
>_> why do all the good games come out in fall?
Seconded!
at least buy a console to buy games not to *****ing be a scienintist 360 rules for life
The X-box 360 has the highest failure rate of the entire next gen console war, besides the X-box 360 is hardly ""Next gen"" it uses PC components for ***** sake , IE PCPOWERCORE ,
Since its release the Xbox 360 has gained a reputation for its poor reliability and technical problems, includ ing occurrences of total failure, where the unit becomes completely unusable. Gamers have speculated that the reason behind this was the fact that Microsoft rushed the system out for Winter 2005 (*****ING 2005 Next Gen My Ass) sales without proper testing IGN journalist Matt Casamassina did publish a blog entry on IGN about having to replace his Xbox 360 multiple times. Many have recently complained of hardware malfunction after playing Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2.
When a Microsoft Xbox 360 console experiences a "general hardware failure", on the front of the console three red lights appear. To date, Microsoft has not commented on the source of the general hardware failure, but many believe it is related to the console overheating or the motherboard PCB warping and flexing due to poor mounting, causing the board to bend away from the CPU and GPU and lose contact with those components. It is also shown if the console is not getting enough power to run certain components, the most affected being the fans. Some people have experienced system failure after updating the firmware of their system through Xbox Live or installing the update through a CD.
Because of its high power consumption. the Xbox 360 console poses a moderate risk of overheating if users do not follow the guidelines prescribed by the user manual. Users are advised not to obstruct air flow to the enclosure vents or power supply. Problems associated with overheating include reduced system performance and instability that may result in crashing or hardware failure. Some Xbox 360 owners have even installed custom cooling solutions in their consoles to prevent this from happening.
Microsoft has been working with a Singapore-based company, Chartered Semiconductor, to create new 65-nanometer chips, however due to development issues these chips will be unavailable for manufacturing within the new Xbox 360 'Elite' system. These new chips have reduced power consumption and in turn, run cooler. They will also be cheaper to manufacture than the current 90-nanometer chips. Because the logic design and clock speed will remain unchanged, performance will not be affected. However, less heat may result in less warping of the printed circuit board, a major cause of hardware failure.
On rare occasions when a user inserts a game disc the game will not load and a white screen will display, followed by this message:
To play this disc, please insert it in an Xbox 360 console.
This message appears despite the fact that the console is, indeed, an Xbox 360. The error may be accompanied by a short and low buzzing noise. The best way to fix this is to either restart the console, eject the disc and re-insert it or power-cycle the console.
This could, however, be the initial symptoms of a hardware failure. (Note: This problem sometimes arises when no Xbox 360 controller either wired or wireless is connected to the console when loading a disc, or the disk may need cleaning)
Another problem has occurred where in discs of any type will not be recognized by the reader, and the dashboard will display an "Unplayable Disc" prompt. This is accompanied by a similar buzzing noise from the disc reader, although it affects all media and not just Xbox 360 game discs. This is due to a total failure of the disc-drive; the console itself still functions for Live and Arcade purposes, but discs can not be read, and the drive itself will fail to even spin up or read any discs.
Another error that will pop-up during actual gameplay is "This disc is unreadable", with little indication as to why its unreadable, other than sounds of the drive straining to read the disc. The frequency of this error is also inconsistent, sometimes happening many times in one play session, or no
...and stick to the subject.
Thanksyou.
"besides the X-box 360 is hardly ""Next gen"" it uses PC components for ***** sake , IE PCPOWERCORE"
Cell in the PS3 also uses IBM's PowerPC core. The difference is, the 360 CPU uses 3 with an enhanced arithmetic unit in each, and Cell uses one with SPE units for arithmetic.
So saying the 360 is hardly next-gen is like saying the PS3 is hardly next-gen because the GPU is simply a PC GPU, whereas the 360's GPU is much more advanced.
Hence the 360 is as next-gen as the PS3. So let's get back to the topic.
...and stick to the subject. Just for once?
Thank you.
but very true =/
i would never waste money on an xbox 3-*****ty that's for sure. it might burn my house down..hah. and it may have alot more games than ps3 but they all suck and the remakes of ps2 games have almost the same graphics or worse, mostly because the 360 uses basic shapes so people's faces turns out looking pointy and such o.O
tony hawk american wasteland has worse graphics on 360 than PS2.
resistance owns halo, that's all i have to say. halo 3 can lick a ***** especially when Killzone 2 comes out. and halo is kind of a rip-off of every other game put together anyways. you can't tell me they didnt steal the elite look off of the movie ALIEN for one thing, and the halo is the only game that people are really looking forward to on xbox. 360 may have alot more exclusives but seriously now they are all terrible, have you seen the list of exclusives for PS3? ...exactly
An even dumber fanboy post than the earlier posts.
Keep it up kid, your IQ may eventually go into double figures.
...I hate fanboys, ALL fanboys, since they are insecure, stupid and ignorant.
They are no different to Jack Thompson in their biased mentality, and yet often think they are smart and funny with their insults and comments.
i luv fanboys cuz they entertain me with their jargon and ignorant one sided view with a hint of insults
Oh yeah F@H thing sounds great makes me wish i hve a PS3 :(
"i luv fanboys..."
Yep, they're only good for laughing AT, rather than laughing with! ;) :)
