Standalone 250GB PS3 Slim confirmed and dated for US

Sony today confirmed that the 250GB PS3 Slim model will be available in the US starting next month. Unlike the SKUs being released in other parts of the world, however, this one isn't part of a bundle.

The standalone 250GB PS3 Slim will be in stores starting November 3. At US$ 349, you'll have to pony up an additional US$ 50 for the extra 100GB. Not too shabby, methinks. As for the 250GB bundles, Sony says they "don't have any plans to announce at this time."

get the scorpio blue. Never really trusted Toshiba to make good drives. Same exact price at newegg with free shpping and no tax except for NJ and CA or something like that.

and no they did not fix it its in reply's that it happens to be equal (+) to plus (+) which makes the above link not work most likely.

I got the Original PS3 and got the PS3 for 300 + bundled with 2 games. And I upgraded the HDD for actually 30 bucks to a 250GB HDD. Now I have a HDD of 80GB's laying around, I'm thinking of swapping my Laptop HDD for the PS3's 250GB as my laptop has a bigger HDD.

yes i see your link is still morphing equals to plusses.

and i have found the prob with toshiba drives is if you move them lots, they fail.

the PS3 is sposed to be stationary so i cant see a prob using tosh drive. i do prefer western digital though (my TB drive is WD) but i still think unless its a 7200RPM drive they got in there, that $50 is too much for an extra 130GB when you can replace yourself.

however if it is 7200 drive, then YES it is worth it.

and many people just don't feel comfortable doing it themselves. For them, $50 is very reasonable IMO.

it takes all of 30 seconds.

take old drive out

put new drive in, done

wow i really didnt have the time to do that.

cmon, $50 for laziness is what i call it when you put it like that.

really, sony has made it pretty damn easy to replace the hard drive.

It's probably a crappy 5400RPM drive. Seriously Sony wants to make money. No one will know what they have inside there system.

# Yea, but people don wana huzzlesouthsidexz 2009-10-15 18:47
People dont want to go thru the hazzle of opening the PS3 unscrewing the screws, placing the new HDD put the screws on put it in and putting everything back. which is done in 30 seconds or less..... The "HARD PART" or the step people dont want to deal with is the Set-up part or aka format part to get the system running on the new HDD. Mine I had to get an Upgrade Firmware from the playstation site and put in a USB so my HDD could be format and ready to go.

Because MS is doing a 250 LE bundle for 400 and it has that evil game and since Sonys making it 350, that would probably win over the Modern Warfare bundle and why do I call it evil because of that money grubbing idiot, who says I can price my games however I want.

Not to mention that A LOT of saves are gone. for example you can't backup the save of Killzone 2.

if it's a 5400 rpm drive, aside from the initial install, it doesn't affect me one bit. My laptop has a 5400RPM drive and I could care less.

# Want big HDD inside your PS3?Sembazuru 2009-10-16 09:57
I only checked Tiger (too lazy to check NewEgg ATM) and found they have a WD Scorpio Blue 640GB for $139.99. I checked at WD's website and found this for the series: http://products.wdc.com/library/specsheet/eng/2879-701278.pdf

Apparently the series goes up to 1TB, but the 1TB and the 750GB are 12.5mm height (read: will NOT fit in a PS3 or most laptops). The 640GB is the largest they have in the 9.5mm height (read: WILL fit in a PS3 and most if not all laptops). Note that the 640GB has a spindle speed of 5400rpm. But really, at those high data densities, 5400rpm should be able to more just as much data under the head as a smaller 7200rpm drive. With the bonus of not burning as much electricity to spin the motor (read: less heat and longer battery times on laptops).

I don't know the details (like exact data density) so I wonder where the break even points are between 7200 and 5400...

who cares!!!!

i do

the seek speed between 5400RPM drive and a 7200RPM is like night and day.

you said both your drives are 5400RPM, therefore you have no comparison.

the reason why i care if its 5400 or 7200RPM is also because of the price difference betwwen a 5400 drive and a 7200, basically you be getting your monies worth with a 7200 but you'de be getting ripped off with a 5400 drive.

if you saw a 5400 drive and a 7200 drive of same capacity and at same price, which one would you buy?

to say "so what both my lappy and ps3 have 5400RPM drives just means you are easy to rip off.

you have to look at all specs when you buy something not just one.

with hard drives you need to look at

size

spin rate (RPM)

cache size

price per GB ( size divided by cost )

before you can make an INFORMED decision.

its like saying a 2.4Ghz Pentium D is the same as a Core2 Duo 2.4Ghz, both have 2.4Ghz and 2 CPU's , so who cares. right?
