Standalone 250GB PS3 Slim confirmed and dated for US |
Listed in: PS3 Tags: playstation 3 updates, Sony
Ó
The standalone 250GB PS3 Slim will be in stores starting November 3. At US$ 349, you'll have to pony up an additional US$ 50 for the extra 100GB. Not too shabby, methinks. As for the 250GB bundles, Sony says they "don't have any plans to announce at this time."

and i have found the prob with toshiba drives is if you move them lots, they fail.
the PS3 is sposed to be stationary so i cant see a prob using tosh drive. i do prefer western digital though (my TB drive is WD) but i still think unless its a 7200RPM drive they got in there, that $50 is too much for an extra 130GB when you can replace yourself.
however if it is 7200 drive, then YES it is worth it.

take old drive out
put new drive in, done
wow i really didnt have the time to do that.
cmon, $50 for laziness is what i call it when you put it like that.
really, sony has made it pretty damn easy to replace the hard drive.

Apparently the series goes up to 1TB, but the 1TB and the 750GB are 12.5mm height (read: will NOT fit in a PS3 or most laptops). The 640GB is the largest they have in the 9.5mm height (read: WILL fit in a PS3 and most if not all laptops). Note that the 640GB has a spindle speed of 5400rpm. But really, at those high data densities, 5400rpm should be able to more just as much data under the head as a smaller 7200rpm drive. With the bonus of not burning as much electricity to spin the motor (read: less heat and longer battery times on laptops).
I don't know the details (like exact data density) so I wonder where the break even points are between 7200 and 5400...

i do
the seek speed between 5400RPM drive and a 7200RPM is like night and day.
you said both your drives are 5400RPM, therefore you have no comparison.
the reason why i care if its 5400 or 7200RPM is also because of the price difference betwwen a 5400 drive and a 7200, basically you be getting your monies worth with a 7200 but you'de be getting ripped off with a 5400 drive.
if you saw a 5400 drive and a 7200 drive of same capacity and at same price, which one would you buy?
to say "so what both my lappy and ps3 have 5400RPM drives just means you are easy to rip off.
you have to look at all specs when you buy something not just one.
with hard drives you need to look at
size
spin rate (RPM)
cache size
price per GB ( size divided by cost )
before you can make an INFORMED decision.
its like saying a 2.4Ghz Pentium D is the same as a Core2 Duo 2.4Ghz, both have 2.4Ghz and 2 CPU's , so who cares. right?
