As their formal press announcement says, "The Last Remnant is positioned to take on the world." Why does Square Enix have the guts to say that? For one thing, the game is scheduled for a simultaneous US and Japan Release (with a EU release already planned). Moreover, Square Enix's latest game is set to be released for both the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3.

What's more interesting is that as far as gameplay goes, you get this: "In The Last Remnant, as many as seventy units will duke it out at once in fierce yet beautiful battles. Backed by the visual power of next-gen hardware, the unique play style and battle system will challenge and invigorate players like never before."

It can be recalled that Ninety Nine Nights, a straight out Dynasty Warriors-esque game featured hundreds of opponents. Perhaps the strategy involved in just facing a paltry 70 enemies will make up for the small number. After all N3 got criticized for repetitive, uninspired gameplay scenarios, so that sort of cancelled out their "hundreds of enemies" gambit. Square Enix will spice this up for sure.

As for the game's backstory, it was revealed in the press announcement that in the past, the in-game world was filled with Remnants - mystical artifacts of sorts. The Remnants seem integral to the game world's struggles, wars, and shifts in power.

The Last Remnant has yet to receive an official release window. Let's hope that the team behind the game does a splendid job.
