Square Enix: FFXIII going multiplatform did not compromise design

Final Fantasy XIII - Image 1How did the fact that Square Enix brought Final Fantasy XIII (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3) to multiple platforms change the game at all, if at all? According to Yoshinore Kitase, game producer, the new multiplatform status did not affect the design of the game, not one bit.

In an interview with Videogamer.com, Kitase disclosed that the design decisions were not necessarily affected by the platform decision. "We didn't have to compromise anything," he said.

There's a single engine [Crystal Tools] we're working on that can adapt to both platforms. It covers a lot of the design and visual elements so we don't have to create separate graphics for Xbox 360 and PS3 versions. The engine takes care of it. We're really trying to create the same exact experience for both platforms.

There's nothing we had to particularly give up or change because of going multiplatform.

Sounds like they're having the same ease with PS3-Xbox 360 conversion as they are with DS-Wii games. Hopefully the differences really wouldn't be as significant.

Keyword "particularly" 'nuff said.

well...

The only thing I would have to say is that they of course could have added more stuff on the PS3 version but of course they can't because of the 360. Sure they can add more discs or w/e but yeah.

We're really trying to create the same exact experience for both platforms.

And that's the problem right there... they say they make no compromises but then say they're trying to make them the same. That means there HAS to be compromises between the two consoles as they both have different strengths/weaknesses.

wow

" There's a single engine [Crystal Tools] we're working on that can adapt to both platforms" if only crytech read this statement . yes does guys are the masters , singel engine who adabt to two holy diferent coding envirement "

Sorry....

by default.....creating an engine which tries to create the same experience on two totally different architectures is inherently a compromise. I am not taking sides, they are compromising both on 360's strengths, as well as PS3's....in order to create something that looks "nice" and consistent on both platforms, but is not really pushing either system to it's capacity....(except for disk space, but blah blah)

doh....

I should read the other comments before I post :P we basically said the same thing....

.....

totally agree, both consoles have advantages in different aspects. Just as example, maybe the 360 can display lights and shadows better, while the PS3 has sharper textures Who knows. Only the developers. But trying to get the same experience on both consoles will compromise BOTH versions.

single platform is always better

if you make a game for two different systems and try to make it the same it is never as good as it could have been if it had only been single platform...that's like trying to make a diet and work out plan for two totally different people and say " its the same for both of you because i have the one super plan that can work"..somebody is gonna end up under worked and malnourished. and with that example i start to think..well, they could possibly make an engine that translates the equivalent code from ps3 to x box but then your still not getting the best out of the systems, there will be bugs and you lose imagination... i hope everything works out well. i feel like they already dropped the ball with ff 14, no male Mithras? still at this point?..ridiculous and seemingly lazy.

FANBOYS

all PS fanny's ha. It's cool stick with your system. I'll still be enjoying this game either way. Actually, maybe you shouldn't get it because you're so pissed that it won't be "the best." Just get over it guys.
by Scyiik - 2009-09-04 10:27:04
@Silver-Tiger

You actually mixed it around. :P PS3 usually has a better record with shadows and lighting (see: Killzone), and the 360 better with higher textures (due to more usable RAM). Overall as long as the PS3 version doesn't suffer at all, then I don't care. More people can enjoy the game. Honestly, it would be nice to quit with all the fanboyism and just enjoy the game.

True

I'd really prefer catering to the strengths of the separate systems, then compromising both to be consistent. That was both get the best version of the game the system can give. I'll admit I was a little puzzled and miffed by their choice to go multiplatform, but whatever. I'm still hoping a little for a PC release, even if it's like only a .00005% chance :)

Your shizzbox will probably Red Ring before this game comes out...
by Shatterdome - 2009-09-04 15:08:07
yeah...

I am disappointed with square this gen. They havn't released one good game for 360/PS3. I am hoping it's because all the "good" guys are working on FF13, but we will see....
by Shatterdome - 2009-09-04 15:10:35
sorry....

PS3 lets be check out porn on the internet, on a big screen, while laying on my couch....that fact right there makes PS3 > 360 :P

Lol

Particularly = "We be lyin". It sucks with that kind of compromise whether it be a 360 exclusive going multiplatform or this particular case. I'm curious to see what the differences are. Its idiotic to be upset just because the 360 is getting this game. But being upset over any kind of compromise because of the 360 getting the game is perfectly valid. I think Versus might be better, I'm actually looking forward to that game more, the design of this game just seems a bit off to me on some characters and the setting. Doesn't seem "fantasy" enough, too scifi maybe.

....

haha, I didn't even know that. I was just trying to give an example. Thanks for the information. :)
