Square Enix: 360 development won't compromise Final Fantasy XIII for PS3 |
Ó

Square Enix has had to reassure gamers time and time again that neither the PS3 nor the Xbox 360 version of the game will suffer due to limitations set by the other. One of the major contentions that keep coming up is storage space, and recently producer Yoshinori Kitase once again addressed this concern.
Speaking to VideoGamer.com, Kitase said that there will be "no limitations" on both the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions. He also reiterated that storage is really a non-issue and that the dev team behind Final Fantasy XIII is committed to delivering uncompromised versions of the game to both consoles:
The team is targeting to create an equal experience on both the 360 and the PS3, so there are no limitations. For example, right now weÂ’re working on the PS3 version first, and once weÂ’ve completed that weÂ’ll really know how much game there will be to fit onto the Xbox 360 discs.
So we donÂ’t know how many discs itÂ’ll be housed on for 360, but there wonÂ’t be a chance that weÂ’ll compromise anything because, oh it didnÂ’t fit in the 360 discs so weÂ’ll have to take it out of the PS3 version, or vice versa.
I believe you, Square Enix. Now just hurry up and release the game so I can have my Lightning fix. Even a demo is fine.
Final Fantasy XIII is slated for release in the US sometime in the future, hopefully by next year. A Winter 2009 release is being targeted in Japan.

"Oh it didn’t fit in the 360 discs so we’ll have to take it out of the PS3 version" is NOT Something I wanted to hear.. x__x
Not sure if thats sarcasm, or if you didnt read the whole quote - "there won%u2019t be a chance that we%u2019ll compromise anything because, oh it didn%u2019t fit in the 360 discs so we%u2019ll have to take it out of the PS3 version, or vice versa."
I am more interested in if it will impact the PS3 release date.
Obviously if they are about done on the PS3 version, the 360 development, which basically just started, will not affect it.
It doesn't really seem like you're paying attention either huh? While the PS3 version will most likely be finished way before the 360, both will be released at the same. You can't really say it's slowing down the PS3's release since they haven't even given out a release date for the PS3 version.
And yes I'm going to get the PS3 version.
Let's take a quiz of how many discs the 360 version will need to hold FFXIII. Starting from 10, then onwards ten-fold....
OH NOEZ!1!! FANBOYZ!!!
Honestly, it'll only be spread onto 2 discs, just like all the others.
Japanese version is out in "winter 09" which could be as early as oct/nov but probably Dec.
I understand they need to localize it before releasing it in NA. Still, they have shown demos with english, so they have obviously started localization to some point. So it shouldn't take them long to localize it... definitely not as long as it will take to finish development on 360.
You have no idea how much a blu ray disk and a dvd cd differs huh? I say 3-4 cds.
Japanese devs could, you know, decide not to have prerendered cg sequences, and that would save a lot of space. But, no, if it doesn't have these videos, well, it's just not a game without them.
Damn developers could learn a thing or two about crutches and how to learn to walk without them.
Fanboys -_-
And does disc size really matter? Final Fantasy VIII was on multiple discs and it is maybe my favorite game ever.... As long as it looks and plays good, I don't care about how many discs it is on
their vision, their decision... don't like it, don't buy it.
simple as that.
So my pointing out that some big-name Japanese developers seem to be stuck on prerendered cg in an age where engine-driven cinematics can hold their own is somehow an admission of not liking certain games.
Stop while you're ahead.
That was 2 gens ago. I don't get why people gave Freya a sad face. He or she wasn't being a fanboy just pointing out the obvious truth. I honestly dont care much and just hope the game is actually good because I hate the characters in this game except for the main girl.
Some of us like prerendered, like me
@freya
3-4 "cds"? lol
it really depends on how sony/square is packing the major parts of data, such as items, maps, and characters/cut scenes. If Microsoft or Sony makes the maps install base, which i hope they do, the ps3 should be 1 disc, with the 360 only needing 3 or so, due to 1-4gb being on HDD, instead of EVERY DISC (Look at the data of FF7-FF9, 200M or so is only maps/towns on every disk
potato is no more!
.............or is he?...................
!
i guess i should included an "if"... i figured it was implied.
holding their own is far from delivering exactly what the devs want to show...
and for the record i like them as well...
bring on 4 discs, if it really bothered me i'd buy it on ps3... gotta love having a choice.
Final Fantasy VII was 3 discs, where as Final Fantasy VII and IX were both on 4 discs. I know that Final Fantasy X was on 1 disc but my concern is that with today's expectations of what a new Final Fantasy should be, Square needs to go all out to really trump last gen standards. I am not just talking about graphics alone, I am talking about gameplay and no more text only conversations between characters. Fallout 3 proved that it is worth having actual speech between all characters in the huge story will really show expression and emotion. I hope Square goes the next step and does the same and doesn't opt for the half and half like previous titles.
I meant to say FF8, not 7 was on 4 discs.
They are releasing the Japanese version before, because they have it localised to the Japanese market.
The engine they use for FFXIII is already multi-platform, which means that moving to the Xbox 360 is not going to take much time, and it will take much less time then it will take to localise it for the US market.
And most importantly, the team that are localising it are not developing it for the Xbox 360, meaning, no time is being wasted. You are wating for the game to be localised, not for the game to be made for the Xbox 360.
As for the game being on how many disks, Square-Enix are most likely going to compress the data for the Xbox, and uncompress it for the PS3, they did this for the localisation of Crisis Core. They will not be taking any data out.
If you look at all of Square-Enix's games, the things that take data are SOUND and VIDEO, the rest of the game barely takes any.
Lost Odyssey had a total of about 5 language tracks over 4 Disks.
Square-Enix specialise in prerendered CG cutscenes, it is what they aim to be the best at.
"exactly what the devs want to show" has always been limited by disc capacity, renderer ability, artists' tools, available memory, etc. developers have always had to compromise, so your argument here is kinda bunk.
but, again, you have failed to realize what the argument was about in the first place.
Of course they won't sacrifice the quality, they're sacrificing the release date instead!
On another note, it depends if they max out a bluray or not but a duel layer bluray (like MGS) holds 50GB and a duel layer DVD (360 max) holds 8.54GB.
Theoretically a full bluray would take 6 DVDs assuming no further compression of data.
But WOW pioneer have developed a 20 layer bluray holding 500GB =S
But they have already stated that they would not include the Japanese soundtrack in the 360 version. I see that as a comprimisation caused by size limitations... so it obviously means something to them.
Definitely going to go with the PS3 version, if just for that.
I WANT VS13!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!! IT LOOKS SO BAD ASS
I'm just praying they leave the Jap soundtrack on the ps3 version, that still hasn't been confirmed.
I think that for 360 they should release it on CD's instead of DVD's. Then, they could promote it as: "Final Fantasy XIII ... on XIII Discs! ---Xbox 360: Jump In" :) ..And, for the record, I really don't see how the 360 version won't compromise the PS3 version in some way. A huge game intended for 1 disc is now going to be on more than 1 disc (I'll bet 3; with a bonus Behind-the-Scenes 4th DVD only on 360). Where they didn't have to have any consideration for "reload points", now they will need to segregate story elements (so that on 360, you're not constantly swapping discs if you happen to backtrack, etc).
"Honestly, it'll only be spread onto 2 discs, just like all the others." What "others"? Other Final Fantasies? I don't recall ANY Final Fantasy being on two discs. Other Xbox RPGs? Dude, even Microsoft's in-house developed RPGs are at least 3 DVDs big. The pressure's especially on this time around because they'll have to cut down a massive PS3 game into a few DVDs. In the end, Square's going to want to keep this game at 3 or less discs because of the cost of packaging the game. Anymore than 2 discs and they have to pay a lot of extra money. But this would lead me to believe that they'll have to make a few concessions to make all of it fit on 3 discs. People will go on and on about compression techniques or whatever, but it's not that simple. I'm not saying I WANT the 360 version to get the shorter end of the stick, but I do predict that it may.
I'm more excited about versus than i am about FFXIII proper(which I am also very excited about).
Don't count on it....
I was watching my buddy do a side quest in Star Ocean, where he had to go to some place, and then back to a main city and do it about 6-8 times.....everytime he went from the city to the area or the area to the city he had to swap the disc. Anyways, he swapped the disk about 12 times in 30-45 mins.....and that is a square game. So they are definitely not too worried about making people swap disks over and over....
i thought crisis core was only on psp? you learn something new everyday.
It will be at least 3 discs, probably alot more.
Consider the square and mistwalker games that were developed with the 360 in mind....they are all at least 3 discs.
This was meant to fit on a blu-ray, so chances are the game will be 4 or more discs, maybe as many as 6 or 7.
Remember, the demo that was released with Advent children was 5gb.....almost 1 dvd right there.
I must say, I like the pre-rendered cut scenes. Even though real time engines can do some nice cut scenes, they are no match for pre-rendered 1080P CG cut scenes.
Crisis Core was only on the PSP, but the Japanese version's fmvs were compress when it was localised to the USA Market ( I have no idea about the EU game ). Not to mention, Square-Enix have been doing this for a long time.
I definitly didn't mean to put the face up at Freya, must have clicked the wrong comment, I was annoyed at the guy above talking about 10 or more discs -_-
I agree though I just hope that it plays well, and that the new battle system works as well as it looks
ive nevver seen the interest in final fantasy. seems so boring and repetitive. but thats my opinion. sum of my friends love it to death
