Spotted: new PS3 eSATA HDD extender?

If this turns out to be the real deal, this PS3 eSATA HDD extender that Gemaga's got pics of would be a very useful addition to a PS3 owner's list of accessories, especially those who want to bring their PS3's total hard drive space to around 1TB for some reason or another.

This miracle storage solution is apparently called the "PS3 HD Plus PHE-01". It supposedly lets you connect an eSATA drive to the PS3 by way of a special stand that itself connects to the PS3's HDD slot. There's a trade-off though: you'll have to keep your PS3 vertical.

Of course, this isn't the first accessory of its kind. Team Xecuter already has the HDXT PS3 hard drive extender, which should work even better for those who like to keep their PS3s horizontal. The PHE-01 seems to work the same as the HDXT, but is USB-powered instead.

The images below also show four additional USB ports. There has been no other info on this thing apart from the pictures (there's no manufacturer brand in the pics either), so it could be a prototype or worse, a clever fake.

Why would you need to keep it vertical? It has to slide into place to lock in the connector; it won't just rest there. You could just connect it, then lay the PS3 down again.

Good point, but that would make it kinda diagonal. Doesn't look too aesthetically pleasing, but that's just me.

» horizontal

i think u'll have a pretty ugly red cable sticking out of it tho

» If this is fake

then it's a pretty good way of getting your ideas onto the market, since it will probably spur a company or two on to actually make them. Personally, I'm hoping I won't need one in the near future, as I have upgraded to a 300GB HDD already, but if this thing has better performance and if the eSATA drives get ridiculously cheap then I might consider it.

» i have the old one

i had the small adapter that plug inside the ps3 and the the other end is SATA data plug which i connect to a 500gb sata hdd with wall power adaptor.

my ps3 can stand regularly or on its side.

but that is somewhat clumsy so i just bought a 250gb internal sata 2.5 hdd.

if anyone wants more storage for their ps3, they can always buy usb drives or convert existing drives.

» That would be awsome!

Dude that would be awsome if they release this thing I would buy me a 2tb HD put in a Esata closer and plug that sucker in the PS3 with the Esata device

This aint nothing new,, I bought one of those vertical stands a year ago,, drilled hole so the esata cable could be wired via the HDXT to an external 3.5 7200rpm 500GB HDD.

Fuggin simple.

New article on old news.

» The difference...

Is that you don't have to drill for this...

I've done mod's before, much harder than this....but not everyone has fun drilling holes in their machines....not sure why.

Still, this looks sketchy...it just doesn't seem thick enough to support a HDD and a fan....where the HDD would go is about half the size of the power adapter.....that's pretty thin....

» oh...it's fake...

NM....didn't look closely enough at the pics till now.

Notice how there is one pic of the "front" with the extra usb ports....than notice how there are two completely different pics of the "back". One has a regular AC adapter type plug and a fan, the other has some whacky ***** and no fan.....
