Speed up PlayStation 3 load times for only US$ 660

How to Speed Up the Playstation 3 - Image 1Patience is a virtue, so they say. But if you just can't take the loading times of the PlayStation 3, then maybe this piece of advice from ExtremeTech can help you out. Maybe. If you have a few hundred bucks lying around.

To see if they can speed up loading times, they swapped out their PS3's 60 GB HDD with Intel's new 80 GB X25-M SSD. The result? Install times that are 25% to 40% faster.

Note though, that this boost doesn't apply to Blu-ray games - the HDD swap takes care of disk speed, but not the speed of the Blu-ray drive - so it's only really good for downloaded games and for load times.

This strikes as a spectacularly impractical method as the Intel drive, which lies in the range of US$ 660 to 700, costs more than an 80 GB PS3 console does. However, if a few extra minutes of waiting really bugs you, and if you have the cash, then by all means, go for it.

» WTF!?!?!?!?!

They already did this. It's been known for a long time now that SSD will speed up the PS3.

You can also SLOW DOWN the PS3 by installing a crappy SSD drive.

Also, by using a SSD drive you will lower the over all temp of the unit.

» What i'm curious about is....

If you replace the 2X br drive in the PS3 with a 4X drive, if installs and loading from the brd would be faster....or if Sony hard codes everything to only read from the brd at 2X...

It would be nice if it worked, because replacing the brd is extremely simple....

» logic fails.

Well, since most of the games i have are on blu-ray, this is fail. Why would I pay for a 80gb HDD that costs more than all PS3 bundles on the market just to speed up load times for games on the HDD, when HDD games already load fast enough?

by Shatterdome - 2008-10-15 09:38
» Well....

It should speed up games that install data to the HDD as well, but they probably did not test it that thourougly....and it's probably not a huge diff...

Like Metal Gear installs 5 gigs of data to the HDD, that's 5 gigs of data that will load faster...and I suppose there are some games like burnout and warhawk that you can download instead of buy....still not worth the money though....

» WTF!?!?!?!?!

You also have to take into account that the guy who wrote that article was an idiot.

Not all "faster" SSD's are $600. Some are much cheaper. You just have to be carful not to get one that is too slow.

» lame

Gamespot already tested the option of the solid state discs, and they said it wasn't doing much of a difference. It was even slower to install some times, but it loaded around 1-2 seconds faster... Wich is lame.

Also, what makes you think I give a SHlT about what you want?

» WTF!?!?!?!?!

That's because they were ignorant in their testing and used a slow SSD. They also updated their finding to state as such and apologized.

» so for ps3 you can just swap your HD?

with any compatible HD or SSD? So what's the point of buying a 40G, 80G , 20G given that you don't care about playing PS2 game with software emu or hardware?

I don't own a PS3 yet so I don't really know...

No more annoying then your childish post. Do you feel better after that?

The only people that would care this much about a SUBJECT line are stupid pathetic little childish brats. Well, there you go!

» WTF!?!?!?!?!

Yes, you can swap the PS3 hard drive with any SATA 2.5 inch hard drive.

Right now SSD drives are expensive. For the most bang for your buck I suggest Western Digital Scorpio drives.

What a waste of space. If is it annoying, just ignore it.

If I can remember correctly, he is doing it because it was his previous name, but he wasnt allowed to use it.

Anyway it suits some of this news that is pointless.
