Speculation: PS3-Xbox 360 cross-platform messaging made possible?

cross-platform messaging? - Image 1

Andronix of PlayThree.net, ponders if PlayStation owners should feel green - an Xbox 360 shade of green to be specific - that the Xbox 360 is set to integrate further with Windows via the Xbox LIVE MSN Messenger feature. Andronix notes that Sony might want to look towards Yahoo Messenger, which already has inter-connectivity with MSN Messenger and Xfire.

Anyhow, since July 12, 2006, both Microsoft and Yahoo have allowed limited inter-connectivity between their messaging services. For now it's pure speculation on Andronix's part, but he sees a possible connection between the PS3 and the Xbox 360 via Yahoo. That is, IF Microsoft chooses not to block it and Sony does attempt to use Yahoo, or at least allow Yahoo to work with the PS3.

Xfire by the way, has already been assessed by Sony for use with the PS3. Will they allow Yahoo Messenger too? Hmmm...

Speculation aside, Sony is already working on their own messaging system, that's set to promote their much touted Game 3.0 philosophy.

I prefer AIM over anything. OLD version> New Version with DeadAim or AImutation. REAL simple interface and majority of my friends have it. Yahoo and MSN to me have too much goin on in the GUI.

besides, who wants to talk on your ps3 to some dude playing pc? You can't even join each other's games. Sounds completely useless.

so this article is 25% news and 75% speculation? sounds like a bunch of BS to me, as well as entirely too much trust thrust upon this "Andronix" person.

This must happen! It would be so cool!

Sonys own messaging system connected with Yahoo! which is connected with xfire and msn. The perfect combination!

» sony....

Knowing sony, they wont take advantage of an existing messenger, they will create their own proprietary one. They will call it something like PSC (playstation contact). It will run on the PC, but since it was originally designed for the wacky PS3 hardware, the PC version will actually be running under an emulator. Even then, the instant messenger will have an inconveniant interface, totaly lacking in common sense. Starting a conversation with a friend will take over your whole desktop, preventing you from doing anything else with your computer until the conversation has finished.

I imagine the PSC instant messenger will also feature a web browser, but it will be the PSP browser ported directly to your PC, with no actual performance improvements.

However, it will support 1080p and blu-ray, even though it is completely useless on a PC desktop.

In the long run, the only consumers who install and actualy use the PSC instant messenger will be hardcore playstation fanboys, who will preach about how this crappy instant messenger is the best there is, and everyone else is dumb if they dont use it.

But.... that is just my guess, based on prior sony products :)

Problem is Sony can't break out of their XMB dashboard. I wonder if we'll ever see any good cross game/platform functionality.

» Do we need to ?

Seriously, when we are on our consoles shouldn't we be playing games...not chatting with buddies on their PS3....when you know we both have PC's and can just do it there if we are not gaming....

This is really only useful for when you are waiting for someone to come on MSN to tell them something, and you are gaming in the meantime and don't want to keep checking your PC....

All hardcore chating should be directed to the PC, not the 360...

When I am playing a game, I just care about the game. If you can afford a PS3 or an XBOX 360, you should be able to afford a phone.

Why send text messages when you can send voice messages?!?! Why send text when you can just chat over Live? Oh yeah, they do't have voice chat on the PS3 network....

Nor do they have a convienent text input solution. Better get a long cord for that bulky USB keyboard!

Is that a joke??

I say this because I'm talking to someone over the PS3 network while I type this....

And whoever decides to buy themselves a bulky USB keyboard must hate themselves, I bought a foldable laptop usb keyboard with a wire extension....

Try pulling your d!ck out of the 360 USB port for 2 minutes and some real common sense may just gather in that playdough you use for a brain fella...

» QUESTION????

I HAVE A PS3 AND LOVE IT A LOT BUT I WANT TO KNOW IF I SHOULD GET THE 360 CORE OR WAIT FOR THE ELITE? WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK AND WHAT GAMES ARE GOOD FOR THE 360? I KNOW GEARS OF WAR BUT WHAT ELSE IS THERE?

by floxnard - 2007-04-10 12:21
» Interconnectivity

But if there's voice, then I could chat with my buddies playing 360, which 75% of them do, while I'm playing ps3, a much less prolific console at the moment. Also A LOT of my friends play PC, so being able to chat with them while gaming would be cool too. I really, really, really, really, really, hope that there will be voice support between PS3, 360, and PC!

by Mister Common Sense - 2007-04-10 12:44
» getting an XBOX 360?

Ahhh always a wise decision. You don't need the elite unless you're downloading a lot or need HDMI. I'd recomend the Premium version to most people. Oblivion, Crackdown, Ghost Recon, Dead Rising, Hitman Blood Money, Guitar Hero 2, are all good games and many more. Depends on what you like.

by Thabor - 2007-04-12 08:32
» Chatting

I wouldn't want to be interrupted in game to type. But instant voice messaging might be a workable feature..

by Thabor - 2007-04-12 08:36
» Shhh...

The fanbois find exposure to fact painful..

But there it is.. Bluetooth headsets and keyboards supported. Voice chat is there. They just need to make it accessable during games.

funny how microsoft can do this but they could not put a web browser on teh 360
