SoulCalibur 4 director talks about Darth Vader experience for PS3 |
Ó
SoulCalibur 4 (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3) director Katsutoshi Sasaki recently had a nice post over at the US PlayStation blog. In his write-up, he explained why Namco chose Darth Vader as the exclusive SoulCalibur 4 character for the PlayStation 3, and he shared some of the experiences they had in the process.
Sasaki says the rationale for picking Darth Vader as a playable character in Namco's latest fighting game is because of the character's massive global popularity and his status as a symbol for the Star Wars franchise.
The challenge, Sasaki said, was bringing the character to life in a video game. Resources were limited, according to the director, as he confided some of the biggest challenges in constructing the Sith Lord.
"Admittedly though, recreating Darth Vader for SoulCalibur 4 was harder than I initially thought because there is not a lot of reference material as he was only in a few lightsaber fights in the movies," he said.
Another challenge that the Namco team encountered was that of making guest characters "fit in." The devs wanted to make Darth Vader feel as much like himself as possible with the use of the Force, but at the same time they wanted to keep that power in check so that he doesn't end up dominating the rest of SoulCalibur 4's cast.
"Ultimately, we created a Force gauge to put a limit on using the power," said Sasaki. "However, we felt players would be frustrated if they couldnÂ’t use the Force on an empty gauge, so we are allowing them to use the Force but it will be counted as a penalty against their character."
At the end of the day, Sasaki said that he believes their team has "brought Darth Vader up to a level" where fans can have a genuine experience of the movie icon. Let's hope they deliver on that promise as they have most of the time.

Vader is so darn powerful even without the force....I mean that damn light saber seems able to slice through anything; no weapon could be a match against it. Throw in the force and forget the saber....he could choke the darn opponent without any effort even if it cost him a bit of health. Handicapping this guy removes the genuine nature of this opponent.... which imo .... sucks. They need to rethink this.... With every opponent's special capabilities...there needs to be an even or better counter....not a handicap....that's just plain silly.
Is that some kind of joke? We're talking about a character who gets at least one limb cut off per battle. We're also talking about a character who fights everyone in the star wars movies 2 times each, and loses a limb every time he loses, which he loses half the time. Vs Luke he wins once and loses once (loses an arm) Vs Obi wan, he wins once and loses once (loses 2 legs and an arm) Vs Dooku he wins once and loses once (loses an arm there too) keep in mind this is a ridiculous character. He kills his wife, tortures his daughter, and her boyfriend, chops off his sons hand, and has a history of killing his boss... (Palpatine/Windu) and that's not mentioning the various massacres he perpetrates. Most of the time I guess he's just a *****
Thats kind of the point of being a bad guy, isn't it ? Doing bad things ?
...But Illegal Machine wins the Most Humorous Post of the Week Award! Yes, although I've been a SW fan for years, I never quite thought about it dispassionately: that Vader's fighting skills are rather weak. :-O
So ok we'll agree with you that Vader is weak now, just for humor's sake. So whats that say about the Soul Caliber characters when they're so weak that they had to "nerf" Vader to make him fit? Plus Vader was fighting Jedi Masters at a young age when he lost his limbs. You'd expect him to lose. Remember this isn't Dragon Ball, he's not gonna power up for 3 episodes before he fights. Yoda is a far better character anyway.
