Sony's Steinberg: Killzone 2 will make 360 owners try PS3, 09 is definitely PS3's year

SCEA VP of Product Marketing, Scott Steinberg, is a firm believer that Guerilla Games' Killzone 2 will be that factor strong enough to have the Xbox 360 gamers try out the PlayStation 3 system. In an interview with GameDaily, Steinberg talked about the golden boy of the PS3, the many more great things to expect from the PS3, and why 2009 is really THE YEAR of the said console.

Said Steinberg on the Killzone 2 lure to bait Xbox 360 gamers:

We feel that Killzone 2 is a tremendous exclusive. It's an exclamation point that demonstrates the distance between the PS3 and other systems. The game is 40 Gigs and could not be done on anything else. It will move people from the sidelines, and from what I've seen from blogs, will push 360 owners to try out the PS3. I think it's going to be a major launch for us and this historical PlayStation brand.

He even discussed why the game was delayed previously, and what led them to reschedule the release for early 2009. According to him, it was all about good timing. They wanted to move away from the already crowded calendar at that time, what with SOCOM and Resistance 2 coming out. And it did work to their advantage, actually. Not only did they get a more comfortable date in February, it also allowed them to kick off 2009 with that much-needed bang.

So is 2009 really gonna be the year of the PS3? We've heard other executives say the same thing before (the past two years actually) - will this claim finally come true?

It's amazing how publisher needs have switched; every year the slate is wiped clean. We're shipping a great lineup and it's relentless and AAA quality. Starting it with Killzone 2, we're going to arrest the momentum from competitors with titles like MLB 09: The Show, which some are calling the best sports title ever made. Then in summer there's inFamous and you'll get to see even more excellent titles at E3. If PlayStation fans thought that we'd rest on our laurels from last year and if competitors thought we'd punched ourselves out, both are mistaken!

Definitely looking forward to those, Mr. Steinberg.

Nobody is brains enough to play games other than first person shooters I guess? No I am not really hating on Sony even though they deserve it, I am insulted that they think I am stupid enough to buy the console for a single first person shooter game. I own a PS3, but I own it as a multimedia device. Its great for blu-rays on my high def but thats besides the point. I believe the hardware is superior but has a bad development environment which alienates programmers. They should be working their asses off to convince other developers that the system is the way to go and to support them, not just get ONE random game and tell everyone to buy the system. Its a pile of bull *****, this company has no brains what so ever. Microsoft should be winning this because even though their system is a piece of ***** that constantly red rings, the bloody thing has tons of Microsoft support. Microsoft worked their asses off making the development tools great for developers and they let indie developers make games using that XNA. Indie developers then want to make games on it and one day perhaps those games get big, and they remember Microsoft and support them in the future. On top of all this Microsoft are paying top dollar to get exclusive DLC. Sony are doing absolutely nothing for anyone. Sony executives are greedy ass morons, plain and simple.

Woah, who said you were stupid. Why is Sony stupid? They publish a very high quality game in a very popular genre to get people's attention. And it works, quite a few people I know have become very interested in the PS3 after this game and for some it has been a deciding factor of which system to buy.

Sony's not going to get support from developers unless they have support from customers, which they need more of. Sony Buying DLC is definitely not a good solution and is a dirty strategy which I hate that Microsoft is using. I for one would rather play good games than 15 minute addon's. Bring on the games Sony!

I have high hopes for this year, ESPECIALLY if they announce that fabled price cut.

But at the rate the PS news is pouring in, Sony's gonna do just fine. I just hope I got something to spin in my my Xbox soon.

FF13 is coming to PS3 and 360, but FF Versus 13 will, for some reason, remain a PS3 exclusive. Great since it looks more interesting than the so-far-looking-goofy FF13.

I think its more a case of its completly different and new compared to the 360 which works like the pc. ie they have to learn a new langauge, one thats not documented as thoroughly or been used as long

you can't deny that Killzone 2 is better then anything that crapbox has come out with. and I wouldn't suggest to play halo wars on your 360 cuz it fried my buddies 360. M$ cant make a quality game cuz the hardware in the 360 is *****. the best so far is gears 2 and that still was pretty bad.

sony has to drop the price, plain and simple... no more upping the HDD size to keep costs down, and claiming they are offering better value.

My friend is just gonna borrow my ps3 to play killzone 2 after that hs gonna return it. The only thing ill miss is playing blu ray movies on my 52" 120hz LCD tv. If i wanna play a game ill get on Call of Duty 4 on my 360 or fallout 3 with the DLC i purchased. Sony is pulling a Nintendo where they leave the hardcore gamers for new gamers. Man nintedo was gonna make cool games Zelda and super smash in HD but no i guess they dont want me anymore instead they make alot of kid games now. Sony was supposed to have alot of games kingdom hearts, syphon filter, twisted metal, dark cloud, zone of the enders, final fantasy and alot of RPG's cause thats why i still love my ps2.

While XIII is coming to the 360, there is something everyone should understand about it. It is being designed for the ps3 FIRST and will be a ps3 exclusive in Japan. After that they will start working on the localization AND porting it to the 360. Because of this the process will probably take longer than normal. Also quality will most likely drop in the 360 version since it is harder to go ps3->360 rather than the other way around (which most devs to date have done).

So 360 version is going to hold up releases outside of Japan and probably won't look as good as the US ps3 release which will only need translation and then it sits around and waits for the 360 version to finish. Maybe I can master my Japanese and just import a copy.

where did you get this false information? Several devs already stated that porting from PS3 to 360 is a very comfortable process, the other way around is much more complicated.

Games developed first on PS3 and then ported to xbox will generally result in a much better game, one example would be Mirror's Edge, both graphically and gameplay-wise exellent.

Got that RIGHT! Plus we PS3 users can upgrade our HD's thats from Newegg or any local computer store and use FPS controllers like the Fragfx V2 or the newest controller thats coming out in May Called the Mambi look it up on Engadet :)

Well i have killzone 2 and it is definitely the best PS3 game out there right now. I'm very disappointed in socom confrontation. I think they should have released Killzone 2 on time. Then we would have gotten Metal Gear Solid 4 and Killzeone 2 in the same year and last year would have been "the year of the ps3". Sony just needs to revoke slant 6's right to touch socom and give it to a studio that knows what they are doing. IMO Slant 6 could probably make a Wii game without any problems. The patches are half a GB and they break more things than they fix.

i have one thing to say: Sony execs are not "greedy ass morons" but are awesome and very kind as not only did they bring out the best console ever made to date but technically are making a loss with every console that they sell. Microsoft, in my opinion, are the not only "greedy ass morons" but they are lazy aswell. they settled for the proffits, not the millions off happy people out there who want to buy killzone and give sony something to repay them for their generosity. Microsoft made the console with pound signs in their eyes, if they to had put the thought and car into the console like sony, instead of using the cheapest stuff they could find (eg the solder)

In conclusion i think that mr Stienberg is ringht and it will pull ove the people that are open for change.

i actually bought my 360 for gears of war, halo, lost odessy, eternal sonata, bioshock, call of duty 4,lag free servers, ability to stream netflix online movies, GTA4 Lost and damned, fallout 3 DLC cant wait for the pit and my second 360 for the anime games like clannad that are exclusive to the japanase 360 plus i dont want to chip my 360 cause of RRoD. I expected alot when i bought my MGS4 special ed ps3 but no game has wowed me like i hoped i dont even care about graphics that much as long as the gameplay is crazy. So far its only MG4 one game and im putting all my hope in God of War 3 this year. Game wize the ps3 is like when the PSP came out!!

I don't really care about those games. My servers don't lag, and they are free. The dlc would be nice, but I get Killzone2. Win for me. I have 13 games, of the last 6, only 2 were on the 360. Killzone, LBP, R2, MGS4 are pretty good GAMES. I don't use netflix or the psn's video service so that doesn't matter. But i do use my blu-ray player and Linux with vlc player to play what ever movie i want on my 1tb external. I also have over 10 games downloaded from the psn. I all fits nicely on my 320gb hdd, along with over 100 videos and around 30 albums. While I'm sure you love your 360, the PS3 suits me much better.

That's because Nomura who's in charge of FF13v development, has stated Versus will never come to 360 cause he's a huge PS3 fanboy and hates 360.

And SE president knows he can't force his game multiplatform, thus why he chose FF13 to go multiplatform.

Anyway, I seriously doubt Killzone 2 will make 360 users try PS3 for the game. As awesome as KZ2 is, it's nothing new or innovative. So it's just like most FPS. Once again, Steinberg tries hard to make KZ2 far beyond anything 360 is capable of. :rolleyes:

Well The PS3 had a great year last year. Maybe not Sony's year of dominance, but outselling the 360 8-12 months in majority of the world is very impressive. That's pretty much what they meant.

I mean if KZ2 was released earlier, it wouldn't benefit from sales. It's a business strategy, Socom would take sales away from KZ2 and people would start calling it a failure...etc. I'm glad they delayed the game, really gave the start of 09 to be very promising. :)

As for your games they suck except for MGS4 resistance one was better than 2 because 2 was really easy to beat my 12 yr old sister beat it and said it was fun cause she actually beat a shooting game. LBP if i wanted to build something i rather go buy some legos ill have more fun with that. Plus when most people go online your server might not lag but other peoples will. Home is really gay atleast the avatars arent that bad i dont see why i need it or what it does but atleast it doesnt dance with guys.you seem to like every game sony throws at you i guess you liked hevenly sword wich was horrible. I love my ps3 for its PS2 compatibility cause the ps2 had the best games ever long live PS2.

on "useless"... this generation is the only one where all consoles shipped with some form of storage included (at first in one model for 360, but now all 360s). storage has never been useless and up until now, never seen as a necessity.

as i was saying. i use my Tv for movies not my cpu monitor. It's easier that way. Besides pain, burnout, lumines, crash commando, and tekken 5 aren't psx games. As for the albums i listen to them as i play killzone or sf4 or pain. you get the point.

And by the way, avatars are lame and a requirement. I dont have to use home but i do, i'm the guy with the helghast mask and sf4 shirt.

On topic my boss bought a PS3 because of Killzone, it's a great game.

Sorry but I've already tried "Playsta" and I am still unimpressed. The system, while large, is pretty to look at and blu-ray movies are sweet (CG movies mind you, The Dark Knight and other live action flicks bothered me. I don't like seeing so many facial skin flaws and caked on make-up in high def) Games that are multi-platform are similar or superior on the 360 and there's not enough exclusive on the PS3 to go around for me. I tried going with the later, higher tech system last gen and while the XBOX had great 1st party and eventually 3rd party support, they could never catch up to Sony. Now that roles are reversed it'll give Sony a chance to see what they did wrong in the next generation of consoles. One thing is for sure, Microsoft is here to stay, they're making a profit, they know software better than anyone in the market and how to evolve the future of their machine/brand. Online Marketplace, Quality Multiplayer Service with XBOX Live for only $50 a year (yes I can afford it, everyone who paid for a console can), Netflix streaming Movies and TV for $9 a month. The future is digital boys and girls, Microsoft knows it and I won't be forced to buy a Blu-Ray player or any other optical disc player with my gaming console. If I wanted Blu-Ray, I'd have bought one. Sony's just going to have to accept that. I'll save my $400 for some games and Microsoft Points.
