PlayStation 3 XMB - Image 1

Those who haven been closely monitoring the developments concerning the PlayStation 3 firmware 2.40 probably know that the much-anticipated update was pulled out following reports of consoles freezing while attempting to install the update. Now, Sony's Patrick Seybold has finally released an official statement concerning the firmware, albeit a short one.

Here's part of Sony's statement:

While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.

It's certainly good to know that Sony's on top of things in this kind of situation, but for the meantime, it's best if you hold off from updating to 2.40 even if there are reports of the firmware update becoming available - until Sony gives a solid confirmation that the bugs in the update have been fixed.

Those who successfully installed the firmware but are afraid of their consoles conking out on them should have no reason to go into panic mode. Sony's Social Media Manager Jeff Rubenstein said that there were "no reports of hardware issues following a successful install." Breathe easy, and enjoy your new firmware.

However, there are some PS3 users who noted some problems upon installing the firmware, some of which include a lagging XMB and slow icon and website loading. Will these side effects be ironed out in a later update? We'll find out soon enough. Updates as they roll in!

Thanks to Darkshneider for the tip!

» good to hear from sony

Well based on that statement it sounds like it hasn't happened to a lot of people, at least not as many as the internet seems to suggest. Either way lets hope they find whatever is causing it.

Good to know that successfully updated consoles won't die later though.

» 2.40

I updated to 2.40 last night, i've seen no problems at all. everything seems to work fine. sept for some reason i cant get my bluetooh headset working in mgo

but i doubt thats a related problem.

» updated when it came out

only problem i had is that i used the google search feature and the broser just hanged...i could go back to xmb and play music but the page was still on the background..then it just froze so i had to turn it off...other than that my ps3 is fine

» 2.41 here we come

We all know how Sony likes to release new firmware for even the smallest of bugs. So I'm sure this means a 2.41 firmware update for the PS3. Yay I guess...

If it were just a few users, they wouldn't PULL THE UPDATE.

» XMB..

I have mine installed. Haven't really had any problems XMB-related. The lagging XMB and such is possibly not a side-effect, because the PS3 is running a full game in the background. It slows down when saving/loading data and such, but I think it'll stay like that.

I still don't see how it lags when the PS3 has like 7 cores or whatever. That's just insane. You'd think it'd perform just as fast as normal.

» Everything works for me...

except for in metal gear online! I can access my xmb on the menu but not during gameplay! Is anyone else having this problem?

by robbo16 - 2008-07-02 22:34
» yh it all works for me

i expected a lagging xmb just like on xbox live dashboard with friends lists its doing too many things at once. the update worked well and i havent really had any problems.

» XMB in-game sucks

You can't do anything with it, i tried to listen to my own tune on GTA IV, MGS4 & GT:prologue and couldn't do it with any, likewise with looking at pics whilst in game (flying rat locations anyone, :D).

But no probs here except my MGS Encyclopedia doesn't owrk anymore.

» same here, plus

on GTA4 and BFBC after a while my bluetooth headset will stop working. the only way 2 fix it is 2 restart the ps3, the ingame xmb bluetooth options dont fix anything. anyone else get this problem?

by BRAV04 - 2008-07-03 02:20
» no problems here

i havent had a single problem BlueTooth works great XMB is laggy of course it reminds me when i first got the PS3 remember how slow the XMB was then they updated it make it go faster then i was happy

» i know....

you don't even have access to change all the settings and stuff just like the accessories. i mean what kind of problem could we possibly run into being able to change network settings in game? or video settings??? this update gets a HUGE "WTF" from me...

oh and also, infinity ward better get the f*** of their asses and SUPPORT THEIR DAMN GAME. even the potential greatness of this update has been raped by IW's decision to forget about the game EVERYONE IS STILL PLAYING.

by Datnizzle - 2008-07-03 03:21
» try this

When my bluetooth goes out I press the button on the side until it beeps once. It usually starts like 2 sec later, in GTA the screen will pause for a split second. same thing on MGO except it dosen't pause. If you do it in the lobby you can see your mic emblem come on, Hope that helps. I never connect my bluetooth before I play anything.

by NeilR - 2008-07-03 03:29
» really..

@Fred_West78 - I guess you didn't read the fact sheet or viewed the preview video that was released a couple of days before the update went up. It's not like we all didn't get fair warning that custom soundtracks require games to support it (either out of the box or through a patch).

@Bigbob6383 - You don't foresee a problem when modifying network or video settings while a game is already loaded? Think about it from a technical standpoint; not dreamland.

by Josh1billion - 2008-07-03 03:40
» No problems here, either

I'm enjoying the new 3.40 firmware. Just waiting for trophies to be added to MGS4 and GTA4.

by scarface_tha_second - 2008-07-03 05:40
» No problems

I had no problems other than the fact that the new update itself does not bring a lot to the table.

by Bountyhunter53 - 2008-07-03 06:05
» Fine here

Could be stability issues i upgraded fine but i have the old 60GB and everything is fine but connecting Bluetooth Headsets leads to it not working but it shows up in game but that doesnt really matter as that happened before but in-game xmb didnt help much in that sector.I think this update may lead to 2.41 or another update. Developers should start making trophies for CoD4, RFoM and other well played titles or the update will be useless till October. BTW i havent noticed a XMB slow down or internet slow down it may be you.

Basically, it will use your PS3's processing power to simulate the folding of proteins. This is to aid research into Cancer and other serious diseases.

by nuffsaid - 2008-07-03 12:10
» -sigh

everything was working fine b4 the update, but now after a couple of games, me and my friends headsets just die (mic emblem gone). turning the headset off/on, pairing and registering again does nothing 2 fix it (still no emblem). but..

in the bluetooth audio screen (with the sound bar) on the ingame xmb, i can talk and hear myself perfectly! when i go back in the game the headset is still dead. the only way i can fix the problem is restarting, im sure its a bug

by jwydell - 2008-07-03 12:21
» home

aren't you talking about folding home from the ps3 main menu? i'm thinking of something else. something to do with you and your online friends. anybody beat mg yet? i'm starting act . i know...dumb question.

» my cousin brought his ps3 yesterday

and updated to only 2.36. just missed it.

(40 GB ps3 is fugly but a lot cooler than 60GB. the playstation 3 logo is just painted on)

by Cydonos - 2008-07-04 02:16
» XMB

I heard somewhere the XMB has it's own dedicated cpu that doesn't get touched by games or anything else, so it shouldn't have any lag in theory

by PS3R00M631 - 2008-07-04 02:27
» FW2.4

i updates mine the day it came out, but it updated successfully. There was not a problem, but it seems, like they saiid that the web browser seems to be a little slower than usual, and some icons are appearing a little slower also... i just hope it will not lead to freezing of the system... but all in all, PS3>360.

by damonous - 2008-07-04 02:30
» Yes, you should bother

Use the search engine on this very site --you don't even need to Google externally. In a nutshell (it's not THAT hard to explain, --jeez), HOME is to be a 'virtual life' environment where you can build a custom avatar, have your own virtual apartment and move around and 'meet' people online. Trophies will become 3D, and previews will be incorporated. There will be virtual 'movie theaters' and 'bowling alleys' and other social mini-games. Essentially, it would appear that HOME would eventually replace the PSN Store (although I doubt they'd ever kill the 'straight-forward' Store sales interface). The 3D virtual worlds are AMAZING in scope and detail, especially recently-released preview shots.
