pspps3"PSP will become a Virtual PS3." Sony Computer Entertainment corporate executive Izumi Kawanishi tell us that it's not very far in the future. Because not all Playstation games can run on the PSP platform, we think this is real great news. Sony undertakes a new emulation project that will allow not only games but also videos to be viewed on the PSP platform.

Sony doesn't proceed without the barriers. Kawanishi says, "There’s no power problem with emulation, but there are limitations with the user interface.” We trust Sony to beat the odds, as it's planning to use the e-distribution scheme where games for PS3, PSP, PS1 and so forth will be distributed via the network.

In fact, there doesn't seem to be a limit to what Sony has to offer. The possibilities are far more intriguing than we've imagined. Kawanishi says that we may not need a a PS3 in order to download PS1 content to the PSP. Downloading content will practically mean doing it via the PS3, PC, or or direct download to the PSP via wireless LAN. Because everything is done through open network, it's even likely that the downloads will work on the mobile phone platforms.

The same transition can happen between PS3 and PSP. If everything goes as planned, we'll have to wait until Sony unveils the new PSP upgrades on September 22 and 24 and see what's in store for us.
