Sony's Ephraim downplays backwards compatibility lag

ps3 premium - Image 1Sony Computer Entertainment Australia managing director Michael Ephraim says that cost-cutting is the primary reason why the Sony PlayStation 3 version set for release in Europe and Australia on March 23 will not be as backwards-compatible as its Japanese and American counterparts.

Ephraim said that there will still be a "broad range of PS1 games which will work on the PS3 and a "limited" set of PS2 games  which will work on the new platform. Software emulation, he says, is the better way to go about things.

It was reported last week that the PS3 Euro will carry different specs from the Japanese and American versions. The specifications are similar to those of the PS3's premium package in America but lacks the Emotion Engine chip which essentially is the key to PS2 backwards compatibility.

"Clearly cost is one of the [reasons]. If software is cheaper than the cost of the chip, then why not do that?," says Ephraim and he promises that "the software emulation list will grow, and thereÂ’s a web site people can check to see what games are backwards-compatible. It will be a progressive emulation."

Ephraim also emphasized that backwards compatibility isn't the focus of the new generation of PlayStation hardware. He downplayed the value of the aforementioned function and highlighted the machine's technical prowess as the real selling point of the system.

"People will be able to play quite a few [PS1 and PS2] games. PS1 games are not a problem. I think PS2 backwards-compatibility is important, but when you look at what PS3's doing with new games, digital content and so on, that specific functionality may not be as important as previously felt. But then again, that is something the consumer has to decide on. We are intending to deliver backwards-compatibility--just through different means," said the managing director.

No mention was made as to whether or not the move will affect PS3 retail prices.

» Less for more !!!

Well at least the 360 had its software emu from the start and didnt make out otherwise, but what you are getting here is the removal of the hardware (which they were so happy to previously boast about) which is saving THEM money but we still have to pay the same / more than other countrys that have the FULL hardware compatibility ?,I wont be buying one.

» This is bull

I can't belive how much attention this's got. Of course Sony are going to do stuff like this to get some more money out of the PS3 (or lower their losses). Cutting out the PS2 components spares sony from selling two consoles with every PS3. And being that it is a software solution it's going to evolve over time and get better. Look at the emulation going on over on the PSP. It's the same thing. And if you really want the better emulation, just import a console! It's really not all that hard.

If this contributes to an earlier pricedrop then I'm a happy consumer.

You know what i find that its a good strategy! Cause realy, look at it. The gamecube could NOT play N64 games when it came out. The X360 is a piece of S since its only good game will be Halo 3! So why critisize the PS3 of doing the same as other consoled? HIPERCRITES, get a life not critisizing a console for its lack of something done before, plus you should keep your PS2 for when it becomes a SNES!

THINK BEFORE YOU TALK

» Jon is wrong

Jon go back to dreaming or better still go look at the huge range of titles coming out this year for the 360, the PS3 couldnt even run FLOW without slowdown !! LOL no wonder they are not releasing the new Command and Conquer game on the PS3 it would proberly stutter to a standstill.

And how are they hypocrites it was one of sonys boasts having FULL backward compatibility but now its being removed and the price is more than those who have it built on, you are the hypocrite here.

» slowdown on flow

I- I'm gonna be honest with ya. I didn't see any. maybe I just missed it...

» you all suck

I read this posts and see all this bickering between people who buy a console and have to defend it because they are too poor to by the other console... and it makes me so happy that I'm a PC gamer.

» Cheapest Console Highest Price :(

Still dont think its right that we pay the most for Sonys cheapest PS3.

Feel a bit ***** on to be honest.

Im holding back until I know what of my games will play.

Its kinda nice to have a box that will play your old games rather than having to have a PS3 and a PS2.

Just to say 24 days left and pre orders still accepted across the board.

Sony has either done well with stock or the PS3 is catching on slowly.

» Point of view

This can be a good thing, we all now the what happen with only the EE emulation, it sucked, it had to be corrected with software fix. So ps3 has the power and with the software development in a few months maybe we can be playing ps2 games with hd resolution like we do on pc with psone.

But im just gessing!!!

» man...

I can't believe this...

sony dropping the ball...yet again.

So they scream about how hardware is better then emulation...since microsoft did software emulation...

then...right after they launch the damn thing they scream that is good...and will have a " limited " bc list of ps2 games...but that you should ignore this...as the ps3 list is better...

I think it'll be a good idea to just wait for the ps3 to make that " list " grow.

» Blah...

1, Wii can play all GC games and some emulated N64 as well. A few emulated N64 games work even on the GC.

2, Sony tries to sell cripled hardware for a higher price to the E.C. consumers. That is the point!
