Sony's customer care: PS3s getting killed by dust is an act of God

PS3 - Image 1Customer service boo-boo or a case of owner's neglect? When PS3 gamer Ive sent in his console for repairs, he was told that his warranty was voided. The reason? The dust that accumulated inside the console (and caused the breakdown of the PS3) constituted for customer abuse or - get this - an act of God.

This may be God's way of telling gamers to stop playing and repent.

All kidding aside, the customer service representative who talked with Ive wasn't able to explain clearly how and why dust accumulation accounted for a case of neglect or an act of God's will, but who knows? This doesn't mean that Sony now wants us to open our consoles from time to time to check for dust accumulation (that'll really void the warranty).

Now's just the time to shop around for a better place to stow your PS3 in while protecting it from dust. The old-fashioned way of covering your consoles with cloth when not in use helps, too.

This is exactly why I take my PS3 into the garage every month and air compress it sparkly clean and dust free :)

I regularly dust bust my PS3 well, use canned air on all my consoles. it's just good preventative maintenance.

Might want to actually read that story before calling this incorrect, The story you link simply confirms that dust is not supposed to void warranty but it is in this case.

So end result dust does void warranty.

I just listened to the audio file on the address below, That dude is pissed. I would be too. Word of advice, If you have to send your PS3 in for warranty issues USE CANNED AIR to blow out all dust.

Having worked at EB, I might know why they might have considered this abuse. Some of the systems we took in were so nasty due to dust mixed with cigarette smoke, that caused the systems to malfunction due to no ventilation. I dont know if it is the case here, but if so, shame on Ive.

The propellant in canned air is highly flammable. I suggest if you use it, make sure you let the system ventilate for awhile after or a spark can make your PS3 explode. I remember awhile back on the news where a guy was chillin in his truck and thought it would be a good idea to clean off his dash and interior with canned air. Apparently he didn't ventilate it good enough afterwards and lit a cigarette and the thing exploded. No joke. Heres the link http://www.enform.ca/1459

Most systems needs maintenance, thats the key to keeping your systems or consoles in tip top conditions. I bet his excuse for not checking it was this "There was no games to play, and i just left it there to collect dust". Im not saying This is true but it wouldn't surprise me, there are alot of people out there who has no common sense. I mean the last time something like this happened was the incident of the person putting duct tape on the vents.

But alas you need to check your system every month or 2 weeks. Its better regularly your hardware, especially the PS3 which is pricey, the proper care is necessary. I check my PS3 every 2 weeks, sometimes every month to to make sure its fine. And only once did i have to clean the dust that was built up.

It would be the same with all electronic devices. You wouldn't let your TV or computer have months or (sadly even) years of built up dust. Its called care for your devices. I also used to work for a game store (Gamestop in my case), so i share Tpsflipper's pain in that. We should at least try to keep the stuff we buy clean. You wouldn't let a Lamborgini stay dirty now would you? ^^

I keep my PS3 covered with a microfiber cloth, then vacuum it occasionally. It's dumb to blow it out because that dust has to go somewhere.

Well you'll be too late for a system with backwards compatibility. You're probably just waiting for the system to get cheaper and to get some more titles...which is fair enough. I've been waiting for the 360 to get a stable hardware release...hopefully the elite will be it for me (and hopefully it'll drop in price this festive season too!).
