80GB ps3 - Image 1Today marks a special day in Sony's campaign in the next-generation console cycle as the new 80GB model of its high-end PlayStation 3 console launches in stores across America. The 80GB model, which is set to replace the existing 60GB PS3, was announced shortly before this year's E3 Business and Media summit in Santa Monica.

The new PS3 carries a larger hard drive, the standard Cell Broadband Engine, SIXAXIS controller, Blu-ray drive and 1080p HDMI output. It's priced at US$ 599 and comes bundled with the platform's best selling game MotorStorm.

The arrival of the 80GB PS3 is in conjunction with the price reduction implemented for the still unsold 60GB versions. Sony explains that the price reduction was spurred by the plan to sell all of the 60GB PS3s by fall of this year and have the new ones take over the shelves.

Peter Dill, Sony Computer Entertainment America's (SCEA) senior vice president for marketing, says, "The 80GB PS3 offers expanded options in the PS3 family of products for those who want to enjoy more downloadable content."

Sony claims that it will have some 120 first and third-party games by the end of the fiscal year in March of 2008, along with 270 Blu-ray movies and more downloadable content in its PlayStation Network service.

» Good day for Sony

Good for sony, giving us an already good product and making it much better. Unlike another company (Microsoft) Who give us four diffrent types of consoles that break down and have its consumers angry and just telling them "Hey just send it in wait 2 weeks if it breaks again send it in again after the 2 weeks, if it breaks again send it in again" Just like a broken record. Microsoft need to learn how to make a good console like sony. Hey Microsoft stick to what your good at, making Operating Systems.....oh wait you stole that idea from Apple and yet Vista still isnt compatible with everything....Oops....whah whah whaaaaaaaah.

regardless if the item was a PS3 or not... still being able to sell an expensive merchadise to a consumers whose initial purchase in mind when he came into your store was of something else entirely different especially price-wise you do good work my friend...

as for the 80GB selling good... i'm a PS3 supporter but i have to admit I didn't expect the 80GB to have a good reception at all.

As my buddy Quixand , me too is a big supporter to PS3 and sony, However as optimistic as i was for the PS3 80GB i was actually surprised and happy to see the success of it,.

Almost makes you wonder how it got that successful. And it puts xbox fanboys back in there cave lol

it really is a pleasant surprise...

i think everybody's expections for the new 80GB model was pretty low regardless of having a game thrown in with it.

» Oh Boy!

I'm going to run out and get one right away! What a value! Only $100 more for 20gb more hard drive with far less backward compatibility!

I just smoked a bunch of crack! No my judgment isn't impaired!

by Mister Common Sense - 2007-08-07 00:43
» Making it better?

This is what I'm talking about. MMmmkaaayyy?

The 80gb model is a cheaper PS3 for sony to make, without an emotion engine chip that allowed total hardware backward compatibiltiy. An important feature for a system with no decent PS3 games until mid 2008. Costing $100 more, the only thing it adds is 20gb more hard drive space, which likely adds pennies to the price sony pays for the hard drive.

That's even more than the price MS charges for the 20gb hard drive, now discounted to $80!

Why would anyone prefer this version over the $100 cheaper 60gb version?

Read some of these moronic comments and you'll find the answer!

Speaking of broken records, sony likes to say the same things over and over again. Games are coming. Rumble is coming. Home is coming. Yet they never come, just promises. How long will you have faith in such a company? When will you realize you were used to help their blu ray format suceed? When will you stop saying "good job sony we love you," and start demanding the games you bought their console for? Do you like being walked all over?

Wonder how many days before this model is dropped?, Two models of the PS3 already dropped in the first year allready..

by tutyu - 2007-08-07 03:37
» Mr sense makes sense to me

It does look pretty bad I must say when for the $100 more you are only getting 20gb harddrive and LOSING PS2 hardware, the Elite looks like a bargain in comparison, and why are they dropping the PS3 models so quickly two down and out in the first year! why ?..

"No my judgment isn't impaired!"

by SOME Good Things Come With a CATCH? - 2007-08-07 05:43
» THINGS THAT SHOULD NOT HAPPEN BUT HAPPEN ANYWAY...a LOT

Lets See...

1. Overheating form a small heatsink and poor airflow from the shape of the console

2. If not option (1) then its poor manufacturing

3. If not option (2) then its a design flaw that shows up at random with option (1) or (2) as the starting

cause or the problem is so small on the motherboard that a redesign from the ground up is the only way to

solve it

4. Its a pice of sh*t (which means "all" of the above)

And what about....

(a) The thing SCRATCHES discs

(b) Microsoft is not "honetst" with the number of defective units that were shipped (and STILL being shipped)

(c) Will they solve EVERY defective 360 issue with a fu*king BIGGER heatsink!?

(d) By the way, did you know its not healthy for your game disks to get THAT hot for such a short time

playing?? they wont last long which results in you buying MORE of the same thing!

If "you" the gamer find two or more above to be a reasonable answer to the problem then your wise and AWARE of what's going on

If you are aware and STILL getting your sixth console sent to you then your a FU*KING FOOL and should give up on it, how much money DID you spend on accessories, repairs (before the 3year warranty) and buying new disks

of the SAME games that was not made by microsoft but was ill scratched by their console AND Xbox live??

IS THAT REALLY COST EFFICTIVE? and still say the ps3 is TOO EXPENSIVE? do the numbers, even IF all the games

that came out on BOTH 360 ans PS3 and see how much YOU the gamer have to pony up to enjoy gaming.

Maybe I am over thinking this

Cause its not like your system is going to eat all your games and DIE on you or something....right?

by dahser - 2007-08-07 07:30
» time will tell

lately we seem to have a trend change, we see more an more people coming in to pick up a ps3 or trade in thier x360 for one. not to mention w have atleast 4 calls a day about broken x360s' from people who microsoft has not helped.

AS A MATTER OF FACT IN A STORE MEMO we were told that if a customer comes in and complaines about a broken X360 and is *****ing about having to buy another then we are suppose to tell them about the ps3, it benifits and how we dont nearly any problems with them comapared to the x360

by Mister Common Sense - 2007-08-07 07:36
» Yeah ps3

The ps3 is an awsome console, I wish I had gotten it over this crappy xbox360 I worship. I'm so jealous of this ps3 that I have to post in these threads to get everyone started up against me. I'm trying to defend the xbox because I'm stuck with it and like MS pounding me in the Ahole.

So MCS, if that is ur real name! U really have no room to talk about BC seeing as the 360 has a sh*tty one... I remember when MC only wanted to make the Platinum Hits BC...

As for the "Games" we were promised, WTF r u talking about? Apparently u haven't seen a release list lately, cause u would see some awesome games coming to the ps3 in the next 3 months. Then again, i can't really expect any coherent thinking from a 360 fanboy who loves to come to the ps3 site to bash it and look like the total idiot he is :)

» .

dahser and "Mister Common Sense" only 5 minutes apart? No, they're not the same person.

All I was trying to say is the 80gb PS3 is a ripoff compared to the 60gb model, and the whole thing is a trick by sony to get quick PS3 sales without significant game releases this year (which is true.)

Why does this have to turn into a XBOX 360 bash a thon?

The 360's problems are already being fixed, temporarily with the larger heatsinks, and soon permanently with the 65nm chips!

I don't know anyone who has had to pay for a repair, who had a scratched game, or had a bad experience with customer support. If there was, actual 360 owners would be complaining about it! Not to be confused with PS3 owners acting like they have a 360, mind you.

What store is that again, dahser? Where MS customer service somehow doesn't do anything to fix the console covered under warranty and they think they have to buy another? I'VE NEVER HEARD ANYTHING SO REDICULOUS, EVEN ON QJ!

If someone out there has gone through 6 XBOXes, they are doing something horribly wrong, or the temperature in their house is over 100 degrees.

Anyone who paid for a 3 red light repair was reimbursed. EVERYONE!

» hmmmm

Well it is a rip off for now, but as soon as they get the ps1/ps2 emulation running it'll be a good deal because it'll then be the old 60 GB ps3 price + extra 20 GB + a free game which then makes it worth it. (Course I'll wait just a bit longer to see if that rumored 40 GB will see the light of day and also maybe after some original titles that aren't racing, FPS, or Sports get announced, hopefully some good Jrpgs will get announced soon!)

» The Japanese truly are smart people

They walk into the store and see these ***** green colored boxes and go like What the ***** is that. Then they say Well I'm pretty sure that what's in there is a piece of S.H.I.T that will break easily and cost me more money in the long run. Then they make the smartest decision and get a PS3 or a Wii.

by Sexyback - 2007-08-07 13:52

You see, the Xblowx 360 has had so many problems, M$ has had such a public kick in the ass w/ Peter Moore jumping *****, and overhyping gaymes like Mass G-Effect and BIosucks that they had to cut down their prices in order to compete. If i read correctly, the M$ only sold 3 consoles in July...and serviced 345234 consoles. ROFLCOPTER

After reading your comment I had to reply with this link to an article on cnet.com that appeared today:

http://news.com.com/Xbox+repair+process+leaves+gamers+in+a+fix/2100-1043_3-6200538.html?tag+bubbl_2

The headline on the first page: 'Xbox 360 gamers get the shaft'

It is about actual 360 owners complaining about Microsofts crappy customer support; and even, how one person had a year-old Xbox with a broken disc drive shipped to his front door after sending it to get repaired.

» Store manager point of view

look im not going to tell you if i work at game crazy or game stop. The fact is that Microsoft said they have a failure rate of about 30% and its been reported more from retailers. Not only that there are people who had already thrown out the old 360 and were forced to buy a new one before microsft said "ok we messed up and we will fix them now". what are you suppose to tell those people, (im one of them by the way) the 360 is a great machine WHEN IT WORKS and it sits next to my ps3( ps3 since launch THAT I HAVE HAD NO PROBLEMS WITH SINCE DAY ONE), but the major probem is many of them dont work almost 1/3.

» asdf

it IS a deal, an extra 20 GB and a game!( for extra 20 GB, (same cost as buying another 20 GB hdd for xbox 360 plus a free game which you could sell if you didn't want it duh) It's only less compatibility for now, there using emulation now instead of the emotion engine because they realized that they didn't need it after all. So they will be compatibility just after a few updates! If you don't believe me look up the European version of the PS3 it doesn't have an emotion engine and it's still backwards compatible(not great but it takes a while to get every game emulated properly!
