Sony vs Microsoft: Ray Maguire and Neil Thompson square off on Eurogamer TV

Sony's Ray Maguire, and Microsoft's Neil Thompson were recently interviewed in the latest edition of the Eurogamer TV Show. Both executives of course, were quick to note the value involved with their respective product, and criticised (however slightly) the competition.

Microsoft's Neil Thompson had a whole lot to fire in Sony's direction. In response to Sony's announcement of PlayStation Home and Maguire's promise of user freedom, user generated content on the PlayStation Network, and why Sony's claims being more of a "show not tell" type of company when it comes to their products and services, Thompson said:

We passionately believe that online gaming, and having an identity within the online gaming community, is what's core to what you need to offer - a service that can transcend different titles where you can communicate with your gaming friends no matter what platform you're on and what game you're playing.

I don't see how Sony can really deliver that, and they're certainly not delivering that in a compelling way today. ...I think what Sony's talking about has compelling aspects to it, but I don't think there's anything there that... We're going to be afraid of competing with, because we will certainly evolve our service as we move forward.

The debate then moves to the High-Def market (this means Blu-ray vs. HD-DVD), and then each exec goes on to defend their console's version of an online community (the charged service Xbox Live or the free PlayStation Network). Nothing new we haven't heard of really. Sony questions the fee to get into Xbox Live and also notes the seeming success of their Blu-ray format. Microsoft notes that three years down the line Blu-ray might not even matter since folks might move into high-definition downloads, and the add that their service and their online community is better than Sony's at the moment.

When price point was talked about, Neil Thompson talked about how similar the PS3 is to their old Xbox: "It is frighteningly dÃ©jÃ vu with the boot on the other foot at the moment. They're 18 months after us, they're at a very high price point, a really big machine compared to ours, and all of the things that we were at the time."

Maguire then defends the PS3, and slightly comments on the competitor's technology by saying that instead of taking products from the shelf, putting them in a package, and then selling them to consumers, their approach is that Sony looks to the future and decide that this is what they can offer in terms of technology.

Each competitor's final point? Neil Thompson said a lot:

People that are thinking about a PS3 or a Wii, I would just say, look at what you're buying, and what do you want to buy? Do you want to buy a gaming machine that offers you the best high definition gaming, and online gaming, for the best possible price? ...If those are the questions in your head, I really can't see why anyone would choose anything but the Xbox 360.

Against all of that ammo, Sony's Ray Maguire had few words to say. It seems he was going for the simple approach. He says:

Quite simply, if you want the best gaming experience, if you want the best output in terms of high definition, if you want the best connectivity, then you need look no further than a PlayStation 3. Simple as that.

Ya know, back when people used to talk about games it was a lot funner.

What character you were going to be, what level you were on, how many headshots you got....

Now its about NPD and chart track and peoples opinions on hardware thats already getting stomped by PC video cards alone. Face it the consoles are the same, they have different games and do different things.

By the way, this list only has those games of which ‘actual play footages’ have been released. When you judge a game, you must watch the ‘actual play footage’ to do so. Don’t even watch ‘actual play screenshots (still pictures)’ released by the developers. When the developers release the ‘actual play screenshots’, they set all the graphics settings super-max (highest) then capture the images (in this situation, the game runs at extremely poor frame rate such as 2 frames per second – simply unplayable); therefore, usually, the screenshots which are available online look super-fantastic when the final (retail) version of the game doesn’t even look similar (always, retail version of a console game only has medium-decent graphics quality to maintain smooth and playable frame rate). That’s why the screenshots available at GameSpot, IGN or all other sites are purely garbage (almost fake).

I really tire of Microsoft's constant poo-poo of the importance of the BluRay drive in PS3. High-def movie downloads in a couple of years. Right. I want to download 30-50gbs of data so that I can keep giving Microsoft a rental fee for a movie for the evening to fill their coffers even higher. And no--I don't want my high-def movie in crappy WMV over-compression. That's NOT high-def, that's phony MS compromise. Just like 360. Compromise. And, the whole online comparison is ridiculous (I have both systems). Free PS3 online vs $50-yearly 360 fee for a lousy xBox Live interface? The only thing better about Live right now is the size of their hot air over their service.

since when is releasing a 200 dollar add-on then dropping it a good idea? And no it wasn't easy just add an HD-DVD drive to the 360; a group of programmers busted their ass to bring you a functional device.

Personally, Microsoft looked better before they announced the "elite" 360, now it definitely looks like Microsoft is playing ketch up.

the ps3 is over priced..crappy games...crappy support...crappy online...and way behind the competition both the 360 AND the wii is selling better then it is.

and if u see the reports for the sales numbers in australia... that 100,000 figure is the TOTAL console sale of Microsoft's XBOx 360 in OZ for the first SEVEN MONTHS!!! while the PS3 is at 27,000 for the first TEN DAYS!!!! i just mentioned that cause it's the most recent figures that QJ has posted.

i know this means little in the complete scheme of things but the "Next Gen" doesn't last for just a year... it goes on... and i'm confident in backing up the PS3 in this race.

i just shake my head whenever an XBox fan try to argue using TOTAL sales figures when they've got a year headstart... but you can't blame them cxause those are the numbers that works for them...

..not all ps3 games get online cut - and actually..the experience playing online is EXACTLY the same as live..just as you would experience the same playing the game online on he pc...there can be no difference (except crap servers with lag) and there are no crap servers on live or the PSN. the only thing live has over psn is media downloads...and i can get the stuff on offer from live using the internet on me pc..except demos of course.

the ps3 games which dont have online is down to idiot devs - virtua tennis for both the consoles had two different devs..the ps3 devs just didnt decide to focus on the online..extremly stupid.

after gettin my nice 52" hd tv. i went about downloading hd dvds, which after 5 films didnt even take a week pluss that internet speed are getting faster and HDD are gettin bigger i dont see why we all wouldnt be downloading. remember 56K.... over an hr just got a song lol

MGS4 and FF is not worth 600$.

Blue Dragon, Lost oddyssey, DMC, Lost Planet, Dead rising, Mass Effect, Fable 2, Assassin's Creed is worth 400$.

I can't for the life of me comprehend all the hullabaloo about acheivments. I don't give a rat's .... about how many hours you've wasted unlocking useless points. In fact, I would almost respect the people with fewer points more. Obviously they've got something better to do once in a while. Maybe I'm strange in this regard, but I'm usually embarassed to admit how much time I spend playing games.

Don't really care about PS3's home either. Not gonna' wanna' look at other people's trophy rooms any more than I wanna' look at other people's achievment scores.

The PS3 is definetly the Dreamcast of this generation.

PS3 = what? 3 million at most

Wii = hmm...close to 6 or 7 million

Xbox360 = is probably close to 13 million by now.

Look at the service of the 360, we are about to get another big upgrade to the already excellent service, and we will have one more before the year is over.

Dont forget about Halo3 the biggest game of all time, just because you dont like it doesnt mean that 20 million other people dont like it either.

You'd think that people who have lived life for at least 16 years could see that supporting a console that is doomed to fail will suck it up, grow up, and choose a side that has a lot of support, people, games and entertainment. NOW THATS SIMPLE.

You know, XBOTS are by far the WORST fanboys i've come across. Most of them if not all used to own a PS2 and/or still do,yet they want to talk crap about Sony after the company provided them with years of great gaming. Hypocrites!

What does the 360 have to offer over the PS3? Nothing!

Games? What a bunch of shallow first person shooters? No thanks. What i find more interesting is how much the 360 has changed since launch, ONLY A YEAR AGO!!! 360 Elite? What's the matter M$? I thought you deemed HDMI not necessary? Why is it that you release a new system with the very feature you disregarded as the main feature? Sure lets slap a 120 HD in there to take away from the focus from our failure!

In all reality, 360 is NOT next gen, microsoft is telling you this themselves, the only next gen feature it had was graphical power. So in a sense the 360 is not the Dreamcast of our generation, Its more like the Genesis, anyone remember SegaCD, 32X? All add ons to try to bring the system up to speed and what happened? FAILED!

All the 360 wants to do now is try to catch up in technology with Sony, sure they may have the "Games" now but wait until developers start asking for more power and space, guess who they're going to turn to?

Someone above said ignorance is bliss...well patience is a virtue, watch it pay off for the PS3 in the long run.

To further prove my point, where do you think all these games you're playing on your 360 originated or took off from? That's right...a PS2...the very systems you started bashing as soon as you got your hands on an Xbox but also the same system that had you playing, Devil May Cry, GTA III and sequels, Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest and so on for hours on end. So before you go bashing think back to who made these things possible, Sony. I'm not telling you to go out and buy a PS3 or to like the company, but at least have the respect to give them the benefit of doubt.

You may be right, M$ has too much money to just let the system die. Sega ditched the Dreamcast so they could make money off all their first party games. But when Saturn was out they would not let it die they kept it going, like M$ would if 360 sales tank. Besides with the number of consoles sold M$ is not going to give up on the 360 in a year.

MGS4, free online, memory card reader, built-in wi-fi, web browser, plays ps2 games, duel-boot, uses any bluetooth headset, RFOM, Blu-ray, uses hdd that dosen't cost out the ass. DMC and Assassin's Creed are coming out on PS3 too, you forgot to list them, problem is the games you listed are not worth $400.

All you need is the Elite, (if you want HDMI and 120gb HDD) and $50 one year XBOX 360 membership. They also come with free 1 month. Rechargable controllers? The controller uses regular AAs, and you can use rechargeable AAs you may already have.

Wireless is NOT needed, and I actually prefer wired because I don't need a wireless router and the connection is a couple nanoseconds faster. I even prefer a wired controller when playing online becuse it also seems a few nanoseconds faster.
