Sony UK's Ray Maguire explains the 40 GB PS3's lack of backwards compatibility - Image 1While a lot of people are going to be very happy with Sony's earlier announcement of the 40 GB PlayStation 3, it is indeed disheartening to hear that it wouldn't be carrying backwards compatibility. Now, in case you're wondering just what pushed Sony to axe this feature with their upcoming SKU, we've picked up an explanation via the company's UK boss Ray Maguire.

According to Maguire, Sony felt that the money that was intended for backwards compatibility was better spent on future game development and helping to cut down on support hardware costs. Here's Maguire's full quote:

As we come to our first Christmas with the PlayStation 3 there's going to be about 65 games in the marketplace, so we feel now that there's sufficient choice in the marketplace and that we're still better off using that money that we'd put into backwards compatibility in either investing in new games or using that money to help support bringing the price down so that people can get into the franchise.

It will be remembered that Sony has also recently started a partnership with Infineon technologies and is reportedly selling some of its production facilities to Toshiba electronics. Both moves appear to coincide with Maguire's explanation. We remind the readers that the new 40 GB PS3 SKU will be available across all SCEE territories on October 10 for €399 (US$ 565). The console will carry two USB 2.0 ports, and will not carry a multi memory card port.

...

This decision is suicide. Sony has said they want to continue support for the PS2 but they have released a PS3 without PS2 support. Are they *****ing insane? I was under the impression that backward compatibility was a major feature in the Playstation brand they Sony customer want. What do you guys think?
by Manny151 - 2007-10-05 10:52:14
I don't get it

Do they mean that it won't have the emotion engine or that it won't be backwards compatible at all? What about wi-fi, will it come with wi-fi? Too many blanks unanswered. I mean they are doing emulated backwards compatibility right?
by Onimushaclan - 2007-10-05 10:52:44
Rubbish

im glad i've got a 60gb model with the emotion engine in it, ps3 wouldn't be a ps3 without backwards compatilbility. hardware emulation rules!
by silentmatt - 2007-10-05 11:04:54
wait... so NO BC?

The above makes it sound like they are stopping work on even software emulation??? Does that mean the newest PS3s won't even be able to read ANY PS2 game discs? That can't be right. (is so glad he picked up a 60GB model)
by ryesher - 2007-10-05 11:19:58
But wait

Hang on if they remove bc with the 40gb. That could mean that further bc support for the 60 and 80 gb versions could be removed altogether from the firmware. Whilst most of the games work i brought alter iris 3 and it doesnt work. Hope they dont reove these updates. I think ppl shud just buy the full fat version a price drop on the 60 and 80 gb shud b sufficient

so they buy this kind of cheap stuff for 565$ in europe?

my god, I think it's already BAD that the ps3 cost 50$ more in canada then in US for absolutly no reason, but also the double in europe? what the hell. I mean, I paid my 80g PS3 with a remote (and motorstorm, dah) for a total of 549$CAD, and the CAD$ is only worth a LITTLE bit more than the US$!!! (almost no differences). :S (I know I had a good price, but they are going to spend (europeans) the same amount of money that I spent, but this time, for the 40g with less stuff and without a remote...
by Mikej3131 - 2007-10-05 14:22:33
Idiot...

There is no reason what so ever it wont have software emulation(therefore it will be backwards compatible with most games). Would Tim Y (the poster of this stupid article) please mention this. Who writes this dumb stuff? Please get your facts straight before you post something like this.

Import Taxes

A lot of the price differences you will see between regions have to do with the import taxes required in those regions. Europe has some of the highest, which then turns into higher prices for consumers.

..

Actually in Sony's press release it mentioned this. The way it was worded it sounded like it won't support PS2 games at all. I hope this is just a missunderstanding though.
by Fallen - 2007-10-05 20:39:26
Poor wording?.

Sure does sound like they aren't even doing Software emulation but that would make no sense. Anyone remember Sony Tooting its horn saying unlike the 360 silly BC the PS3 will have 100% support with dedicated hardware out of box?. How long did that last..
by Binary - 2007-10-05 23:08:12
eh wtf?

no backwards compatibility. Sony should cut the price in half since they WONT SUPPORT PS2 ANYMORE. PS2 went big but not PSone.
by Someone_PR - 2007-10-06 00:54:09
hmmm..

it have 100% backwards compatible... just buy a 80gb or 60gb... this is just a cheap version for the one that only want to play ps3 games or want to buy a blu-ray player for less...
by Quixand - 2007-10-06 07:09:53
what the hell i'm i reading

here about Sony not supporting the PS2 anymore (especially that Binary guy below) cutting down the backwards compatibility of PS2 softwares on the PS3 is not "not supporting" the PS2... they are still churning out PS2s by the boatload and titles keep on coming, to me that is very good support that they are showing the PS2 and personally that should be enough cause that was how PS2 has been even before the PS3 arrived, nothing changes for the PS2... so what the hell is all this Sony not supporting the PS2??? the damn thing is selling more than both the XBox and PS3 and there are more titles for it on a regular basis than both!!! The PS2 is alive and kicking!! more alive than the XBox 360 and PS3!!!! So can it with all this talk about Sony not supporting the PS2... and this move shows that they are focusing more additional support for the PS3 with PS3 owners concentration going to PS3 titles and as he said more money for PS3 games development. nothing is being shortchanged between the two platforms... PS2 lives it's life as it has been doing so for seven years now... and the PS3 gets more love.

this is not good

luckily ive got a 60 gig ps3 already but it is software bc!!! does this now mean that even the existing machines in europe without emotion chip (ie with software bc support) are not going to get bc updates as well to make any more of the current games compatible?? because if they are using the software bc in future firmware for the machines that are software bc, then why cant the 40gig one not be? from what the uk boss is saying, they're not going to waste any more cash on making the software ps3 software bc!!! luckily ive still got my ps2 as well!!! but i still think this sucks bad!!
by the by - 2007-10-06 10:01:04
also

i was just on ign's website reading comments on this subject and there were alot of people saying "who cares about bc, if you are that bothered about bc, then buy a ps2"!!!! but then i thought, hangon, ok, you could keep using or buy a ps2, but the current ps3's actually upscales the ps2 games to HD, software or hardware emulated!! so yeah, the bc is a big loss on the ps3!!!
by Fallen - 2007-10-06 10:15:27
O Rly?

Only the original NTSC 60GB PS3's have dedicated hardware for BC. No other region has any dedicated hardware and no other NTSC model includes it.
by Barakku - 2007-10-06 11:17:53
b

Cut the price in half? The cost of a PS2 is less than half a PS3; even this one, smart one. This is a cheap alternative for people that already have a PS2 and or just want a cheaper PS3 for PS3 games. And what? The first PS went almost a big, and was what got Sony into the gaming world....
by Barakku - 2007-10-06 11:20:58
ER....

This is the cheap version. People that want cheap things probably don't have a 40" 1080p plasma screen TV.
by damonous - 2007-10-06 13:45:14
Not the first time someone did this..

...and we shouldn't smack Sony around for doing it. Obviously, the hardware is still capable of PS2 support if the 80gb PS3 can do it. Now, there may be some technicalities involved in that a PS3 with 2 USB ports can't support WIRED PS2 controllers. But, in the end I think somewhere in a year or two, anyone who buys a 40gb PS3 will eventually get the PS2 support. As a business decision: who cares? --They're still providing an expensive piece of hardware for a below-cost price and letting you play PS1 + PS3 games. So? How is this bad? ...As much as I like the concept of playing PS2 games as well on my PS3 60gb, I haven't touched them in months (in lieu of the PS3 games).
