Sony's Cell Processor chip used in the PlayStation 3 console - Image 1Sony proved once again that size does matter when the company announced the new 45 nm Cell processor that it will be featuring in this year's International Solid State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) in San Francisco.

The Cell Broadband Engine, used to power Sony's PlayStation 3 console, will be migrated from its previous 65 nm version to a more compact 45 nm model. Beyond the gaming industry however, this may also help advance different fields of study as the Cell Broadband Engine is also used in areas such as medicine, software and architecture.

The small chip area size will have a more efficient power consumption rate of up to 40% lower compared to its predecessor. They are also looking into improving the design for manufacturability for Cell to simplify the CPU production process.

Other developments in the area of microprocessor improvements also include Intel's quad-core Itanium Tukwila, as well as the entry-level Silverthorne CPUs and Sun's 16-core Niagara 3 chip. All these will new advances will be featured at the ISSCC, which will be held at the Florence Metropole Hilton in San Francisco from February 3 to 7.

» wa

Dont they already have 45nm in the 40GB model.

» You say meh....

But producing those smaller, more efficient chips will cut cost and allow Sony to consider even further price drops. so go meh somewhere else.

There should be a minimum IQ test for registration on QJ, as evidenced by all the idiotic comments I've seen so far on this site, 2 examples being "Mentality" and "Kingofdaberbz"...

its 65mm...

» correction....

65 nm... sry.. anyways, this is good... they can probably have future price cuts on later ps3 SKUs...

by Woden501 - 2008-01-30 15:12
» I Agree...

They should have a maturity test as well, or set an age requirement. Anyways, this is good news as it will probably help to lower the price of the PS3 in the long run, and the lower it gets the faster I will be able to get one.

» I guess this is

I guess this means the analyst was correct about there being a price cut on the PS3 soon and Kaz Hirai just lied and said there will be no such price cut.

I knew Kaz would lie about there not being a price cut for the PS3.

Anyway I think the analyst that said there will be a price cut soon is correct.

Wow my goodness, PS3 is starting to cost less and less every year. Next year we will probably get a 200 dollar PS3, maybe a PS3 slim line but you have to agree, they are doing these price cuts every year and its doing them pretty well, even though its costing them alot of money on the old PS3's.

I believe that Sony will do great with a cheaper cell processor and PS3 costs.

» Its happening like before

Kaz denied it but now we're starting to see stuff about it at EB games/gamespot (like how it happen with best buy before).

Shouldn't they work on making the RSX 65nm next?

by Eclipze_ - 2008-01-31 06:01
» nope

+p

» well, duh...

we can't have our Terminators having the current power hungry chips. sheesh.

by droq - 2008-01-31 08:13
» ahahah

dude if our chips ware down and dont give enough power..then by allll god forsaken means..

microsoft will be all over our dingdongs!! and in our i mean all the people that are strickly ps3

by Lazyboy256 - 2008-01-31 08:31
» Good job

Sony, like the others who posted already, this may mean a cheaper cost for the PS3, benefitting it's market, and they'll be getting my money as soon as I get a summer job.

» Congrats Sony

Hopefully with this you can gain the money you lost early in the PS3 years and use it to make more games and new franchises. And possibly New features in th next FW update.
