Sony to open up PS3, in-game ads coming to PS3 games |
Ó

The latest in the game business news reveals that Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) may have an in-game advertising program brewing, though the extent and the target titles have not been revealed. In-game advertising companies such as Double Fusion, IGA, and Adscape by Google are likely to be the first candidates and to talk with third party publishers to incorporate the necessary mechanics and support.
The possibility of in-game advertising on first-party games are as yet unknown. But one unnamed source indirectly confirmed that Sony has something lined up for in-game advertising, and added, "It'll come down to games and who [of the third-party publishers] has the largest catalog of games." The more popular game, it's bound to be targeted for in-game advertising.
Sony's in-house sales team for the PlayStation Network has already begun one such in-game advertising project with Idol Minds' Pain, released in the U.S. late fall last year and soon to be released in the UK within the month. The ads won't be burned in, as reported, but will be incorporated as dynamic ads.
Unfortunately, a spokesman from the company wasn't very helpful in shedding light on the matter, stating that Sony does not comment on unannounced initiatives or products. They have commented on the effectiveness of in-game advertising before, however. If a follow-up announcement is forthcoming, keep your eyes peeled on this space.

I hope not to be playing some futuristic game and see a sign for burger-king on a passing asteroid......
Well for some games kind of like I'm guessing Home will be it'll look more like real life with modern add's we see everyday. I dont think it'll be out of place like flashing on your screen or somthing lol.
thats gonna be a real pain, hopefully these adds will at least be overshadowed
I personally dont see anything wrong with it. I see this as a good thing as it wont affect game play and could help developers in production costs to make better games.
they had better lower the prices of games if they're going to put that crap in there. what am i paying for?
a game. Its not like its gunna stop your game in the middle of a firefight or cutsense and show burger king whopper's or somthing. It'll be balanced I would think because they know there are people that dont want to be flooded with ad's.
Still, it'd be funny to be paused at the end of a boss load screen and be told that the next quasi-demon baddie I've gotta fight in pitch black darkness was brought to me by AIG Life Insurance coupled with a line, "Don't you wish you had one?" Hyuk.
if Microsoft or Nintendo bought ad space in the sony games
more skynet crap.
(enough with the credit loans already argh! i aint broke yet im insured already!) thats y i am totally off watching TV broadcast and on the net more.
that can hold multiple levels of information at one time...esp. if wanted to say...tag an avatar with preferences and alter things towards those preferences. Then, of course, that would require some kind of AI to accomplish that efficiently. Oh yeah, did you read that Amazon just beat out Itunes as the #1 inet music delivery system...hmm...I wonder why?
Sony must have hooked up with QJ.
I dont think it'll get that bad. I imagine it like I'm playing cod4 and see a bill board for a company while crossing the street. But I guess we'll see how it goes soon.
