PS3 game vending machines unveiled - Image 1Ever found yourself in a situation where you just want to buy a DVD movie and hole up in your room with some popcorn, but it's midnight and nothing's open except that... specialty store with the flashing neon lights?

Where can you grab a flick at that hour? (Legally, I mean.)

From your local vending machine! ... eh? Yep. There are soda machines, iPod machines, and soon there will be entertainment machines, courtesy of Sony and Universal Pictures.

Called PoP "entertainment vending machines" (no, they don't dispense all kinds of entertainment, put a cork on your dirty mind), these boxes dispense DVDs, Blu-ray discs, and even PS3 games. If you're not the CD kind of guy though, you can pop in your USB or SD card and download some music and movies.

Useful when you get the urge to watch the latest store releases, or if you don't have an internet connection at home, or if you just don't have the patience for downloading.

PoPs are promised to launch with 150 movies, including recent flicks like Hellboy II and... Mamma Mia. There are choices for everyone! The boxes are reported to appear in cinemas, gyms, universities, and travel stations. Follow the source link for a hands on vid.

» RedBox anyone?

I take it no one has heard of the Redbox DVD Kiosks? You can find them anywhere and rent their DVDs for $1 and you can op to buy them if you like them. Unfortunately Universal Studios is demanding a serious profit cut from Redbox or else they're gonna make sure they get cut off from their DVD sources.

» Something better

We should be able to do all this from home. It is almost like that as it is anyway. The only thing is Sony will jack up the price.

» Not so bad

Ah it's a step forward for getting normal non-tech people slowly into the world of downloads, SD's and USB Sticks...

Will they be updated online? Would be convenient, although the hacking potential would be 'interesting' haha

Imagine walking up to one with a bunch of 'aXXo dvd rips' and brand new movies for $0.01 on it haha

» Actually...

The iPod machines sell PSPs. I know, it's weird, but iPod machines sell PSP systems and games. Go to a Macy's and see for yourself.
