Sony: The PS3 is worth every penny

PS3 - Image 1The PS3 is pricey, no doubt about that. The US$ 399 for the 80GB PS3 is quite a blow to the wallet. "Now I've heard it said a number of times before from a lot of different folks: Well, you know, it's all about price and it's all about what you can provide, and everybody's price conscious," said Ian Jackson, SCEA VP for sales.

But the reason that the PS3 is priced the way it is is because of its entertainment versatility, and expensive, but powerful Blu-ray drive. "There is no product in the industry today on the videogame console market that delivers what a PlayStation 3 delivers for under US$ 400, in the case of the 80GB," Jackson said.

Jackson mentions that the sales target for PS3 units for fiscal year 2009 is 10 million, and he is confident that they can hit the mark. "We're on track to hit those numbers, and we will hit those numbers," he said.

» why complain

I really find it hard to believe why people are complaining about the price you end up paying about the same or more with other consoles. I agree whole heartedly with sony that price delivers an extreme amount of value, fact that we get a near super computer processor and blu ray drive, wouldnt have hurt to put a better video card but none the less I still believe graphics look great so doesnt matter.

Any ways in my opinion sony should focus their marketing on how the overall price vurses its competitors is a better value.

XBOX $199

wireless adapter $100

*i would need wireless because my router downstairs and xbox would be in my room

xbox live $60

Total $359- this is only $40 the price of the PS3 and this is the price of the arcade so no hard drive. Also this is only a 1 year subscription to xbox live, we could always cancel out the live price because xbox live is great, but for reasons of comparison im leaving it on.

Nintendo wii $ 269.99

Extra controllers X1 $ 70

*Wii fit $ 99.99

*motion plus $ ???

Ok first off for nintendo wii you must have an extra controller, and if you dont have atleast 2 i dont see why you have the console, anyways the total price would be about $340 not including all those little gadgets and crap. Over all you spend a lot on the wii in terms of price.

Now I know I wasted my time typing all this crap out, but I just want to say that i hate when people complain about the price, but then again I'm kind of dispaointed in SONY for doing a poor job of expressing its value, sure they say it but prove it like I did.

by Cortador - 2008-11-13 18:11
» Hmmm

True, it is worth every penny, however, there are a lot of people who wants a PS3 but can't afford to pay 400 bucks for one.

Parents however don't know about the values that comes within the console, so most of then opt to go with the 360 which is 200 bucks less.

by [DVSDevise] - 2008-11-13 18:48
» ...

You can bend it what ever way you want, but the fact is you can buy a 360 for $199 and play leading edge games. The catalog is bigger with a wider diversity of games. Cheap games are also easier to find. Online cost is errelivant, only core gamers care about online. The current market leader has the worst online service.

I think the PS3 should be $349 right now to pull even with the 360 and $300 to pull ahead.

by papajag - 2008-11-13 18:57
» ...

I guess people want Sony to take out the wireless connection and the blu-ray and DVD player and have their controllers runs on AA batteries which you have to buy separately. This way the PS3 can sell for 200.

by Xis - 2008-11-13 19:09
» hey

thats high ambition I couldnt afford it either but I got one usein it now aiming high has a price....400$ that reminds me a couple posts up say all that stuff to nearly add up to a PS3 price it does Ive been sayin that for years and even if you get a 360 199 you NEED a HDD and LIve so that 199 is a FKN illusion and still inothin else plays Blu ray OMFG BLURAY!!!! how I love thee

.

by Jaiggon - 2008-11-13 19:34
» noting the price

A supercomputer costs what now?! and if people buy about 4 per block it amounts to two blocks for a supercomputer. something should be said toward technological advancement with this console. Long Live Linux!

by Shatterdome - 2008-11-13 20:27
» That's exactlly it right....

with all the extras you have to buy on 360, the price evens out....wireless adapter, hard drive, xbox live, play and charge kit.....brings you up to the same price as PS3, with still less funtionality (no blu-ray, web browser, linux) of course though you have to buy a headset for PS3....but you end up getting one that doesn't break every 3 months and cost you $25 to replace....

I suppose it's about options....and 360 does give you more options to spend less money....but if you decide to upgrade in the future you get ripped off hardcore....

by avidGamer - 2008-11-13 20:40
» ...

Your right the PS3 is just as good a deal if not better than the 360. However that only holds true if you are a hardcore gamer who wants to play online, watch expensive blueray films, stream media from their home PC, maybe run Linux etc...

For the average casual gamer who just wants to play some next gen games offline, the 360 offers exceptional value, for £99 you could buy an xbox arcade and your done. If you wanted a PS3 minimun you can spend is £300.

My point is casual gamers have a very hard decision at the moment, pay £99 or pay £300 for what they see as providing the same benefit to them.

Sony is stuck in a hard place, it cant rip out the blueray and sell some cheaper SKUs because their games depend on this. It also wouldn't want to start charging for online as alot of people would be outraged, at least until Home is released and adds some tangible value.

So for now Sony cant strip down there SKU any more than they already have, and at some point they will need to drop their price to capture some of the casual gammers that the 360 is currently getting.

by [DVSDevise] - 2008-11-13 21:15
» ...

I agree they couldn't really strip anything out.

This is what they could, I know it wont mke everyone happy thou.

1) Return backwards complatibility!

2) Get your online service up to speed with Xbox Live and charge half the price

3) Package cheaper games instead of newly release first party games in your bundles

4) Stop increasing the hard disk size instead of reducing the price

I think they could easily cut the price if they made these changes.

» i didnt even read the article.

i just read the title. and i completely agree,.

now a lot of fan boys will get pissed at me for saying this, but honestly i dont give a flying ####,

I used to own a 360 before i got my ps3, and it broke down, sent it in and the other broke down in two months,

"unacceptable'

i've had :one: ps3, for over a year now, and no problems at all,

i bought my ps3, to have a console that wouldnt break down every other month, but once I got it, with its blu-ray, and other features like the ability to steam movies from my pc,, " which notably is a feature that preforms better on the ps3"

*personal moment, i dont care what any 360 fanboy says, the movie steaming feature damned well is more stable on the ps3, and to hell with anyone who thinks differently., both my 360's i had, would often crash in the middle of steaming a movie, that kind of ***** just doesnt happen on my ps3.,

I find it to be the supirior system,.

i'll never go back to the 360 now,,

but seriously, you dont have to slag off the 360 cause you got a ps3 and prefer it now. i got a ps3 too and prefer it over a 360, but i know the 360 is great too and i have to admit its way better than i thought it would be after playing it often at friends.

what i mean is just enjoy your ps3, u dont have to justify buying it by making out the 360 is worse than it really is.

people think, i ' have to do this, or i have to do that. just because, the dissagree or dont like what i have to say,.

'I DONT LIKE THE 360, IT BREAKS DOWN TO MUCH, THEY CLAIM THE RED RING ISSUE IS FIXED, BUT IT REALLY ISNT,

THE PS3 REALLY IS, THE SUPIRIOR CONSOLE, AND THOSE PEOPLE WHO SAY THEY HAVE BOTH AND SAY OTHER WISE, ARE STRIGHT UP LIARS AND DONT OWN A PS3 AT ALL, FOR IF THEY DID, THEY WOULD F#ING KNOW BETTER,

honestly, i dont know how to make that any clearer,

do you guys know what a forum of public opinion is?

it's a forum, where people come in and express their opinions, and if people dont like those opinions, then those people express their opinions, But ultimately, the painful truth is, i have the freedom, to not like the 360, and prefer the ps3 over it, if i damned well choose,,

I payed $600 for my 60 GB unit and 18 months later payed $150 for a refurb after having to send it in but to me it is still worth it. I use my PS3 everyday and all of the things it can do make it so worth the price. As a matter of fact right now I am using it to read and reply to your posts.

you say your 'raging' post above wasn't addressed at me, then fair enough i accept that, but my point is that it was clear that you were here to start a console war instead of debating the topic, which you now admit to, and therefore my responses to you are justified.

now if 360 fanboys came here and starting something first, then fine it's fair game, but don't expect me to support spoiling a topic with yet another mindless console war.

The arcade version pales in comparison to the Premium or pro(whatever its called) with a hard-drive. Especially since with the NXE(though being optional) installing your games helps the games and the system perform outstandingly better. Sorry, I just don't see how the arcade is worth getting.

by RexNox - 2008-11-14 05:07
» To shorten a long-winded rant...

on this article's spin. The PS3 would be worth EVERY penny if they gave 3rd party support so the others can make beautiful games like R2 and Uncharted. Also, if they took the time to consider the player's experience, I think it would worth EVERY penny. Maybe I was too young to notice that arcade games and the previous gen. console games were of substandard quality, i.e. buggy, but to say that this gen's games are problematic would be the understatement of the year.

You have marketing releasing sales figures...as if I (or anyone I know) give a crap about sales figures (esp. considering that what is reported can be manipulated).

All I know is, Sony has sold MORE PS3s then MS has sold 360's when you compare LIKE timelines.

In other words, when the PS3 was released, MS had sold X amount of 360s yet when you look at their aniversary dates, that gap gets smaller and smaller....meaning MORE PS3's are selling then 360s in the long run.

So tell me, what does it mean when a more expensive console can OUTSELL a lower price console?

I'll give you at least one answer. It means people want MORE for their money and they get EXACTLY that with the PS3.

» Yup PS3 is the Best

I don't own a PS3 or an XBOX 360 at all, however I have a Wii (Which isn't mine, its my work *Don't ask why my work has a Wii) lol

However my friends own a PS3 and I usually go over to play PS3, and I know of all the features it has and all, I like PS3 becuase it has a ton of features that are cool that no other console has. Besides that you can always upgrade the Hard Drive on the PS3 to make it bigger, and you got the SIXAXIS controllers. I like the features and what I like the koolest is I can Plug-in my Blackberry phone and charge it while I'm playing PS3 lol and I can copy my music from my PS3 to my 16GB Micro SD on my phone.

I've been wanting to get a PS3 but its pricey, but its worth it. Especially when NFS Undercover is coming out, theres LBP (Little Big Planet) and of course can't wait for KILLZONE 2!!!!

XBOX 360 I don't like the idea that you have to pay for XBOX Live or so, I used to play the Original XBOX and I really never got adjust to the controls it had. XBOX 360 might be cheaper than the PS3 but if you get the arcade console you get no HDD and network adaptor and so... It's kinda like the PS2 where you needed a Network adaptor to play online, and a HDD if you wanted to run backups or so.... (Even tho PS2 HDD was used to run backups)

The Wii, well its kool and fun to play with it, but yea you really need to have a second control in order to play the console, because playing by yourself all the time isn't that fun. Controls are a little pricey and you always have to replace the AA batterys when there dead (Unless you buy the actually Battery that is chargable) I find no point to buy the wii unless you know there will be people who will play together.

SOOO.....MY FINAL CONCLUSION IS.....PS3 IS THE BEST!! (I own a PSP so its even better if I get a PS3)

» I Love Gaming

I love my PS3. The value of the PS3 is greater than it's price. It's a quality system. I like my 360. The only small edge the 360 had a one point in my household was online gaming. Now since most of the people I know got a PS3 I game just like I did before when the 360 was the main online system. That's truly the only overall benefit that keeps most people saying the 360 is better. I would never buy a Arcade 360 as my first system. It has nothing to offer. You would need to at least start a premium and cross your fingers that it continues to function at a normal level. I have preferred my PS3 for over a year now. It does it's job and then some.

infamous

lil big planet

wipeout hd

soul calibur iv

and i own 27 games for the 360

but also i dont use my 360 for other stuff besides gaming while i use my ps3 for everything i use it more than my pc in fact im typing on it right now.

ps3 is well worth the purchase because

1.blu-ray - ive never seen a blu-ray payer cost less then 250$

2.harddrive- i think a 80 gig is atleast worth 100$

3.Its way better than the peace of crap we call trhe wii

4.It has dvd i have never seen a dvd player cost less than 25$

5.wireless controller-Though 360 has it to its cery cool

6. it has dual core

7.1080p while 360 is 720p

8.Its deffinately the more sexy console

9.built in wifi has to be atleast worth 50 bucks

10. I can play nes games on it (through bd-j)

ide say the worth of this all together is

since ps2 was 199$ id say they threw on a good 420$ worth of extras and that makes it worth 619$ but we get it for almost half of that.

» Actually

The PS3 has 7 or 8 cores, something like that.

Larger HDD's aren't really that expensive at all. You can get a 320-500gb for somewhere between $100-$200 which is the about the same price as 120gb HDD for the 360 and it isn't proprietary either which is kinda weird for Sony.

The PS3 has Bluetooth which you can use it for other devices instead of just the headset and it doesn't have to be just one brand of headset. You can find one that's to your liking and chances are it would work.

It is the better looking console but that glossy black finish on the casing and the chrome finish on the the disc slot (60gb sku) is a fingerprint and dust magnet.

Also don't update to FW 2.50 because you will lose your BD-J capabilities, but not updating, you will lose the PSN. Personally I would rather lose BD-J.

by PimpFriedRice - 2008-11-15 06:39
» Price point

There is a diffeence between what we think certain hardware for features are woth and what it actally costs the manufacturer to produce. HDD's are cheap to produce and so are wifi modules. The Price of Blu-ray players has fallen tremendously since their release. DVD technology has been around since the mid 90's and if you look hard enough you can find one for $19.95, a crappy one though. It no longer costs Sony $800+ to make a PS3 even if they never changed the hardware from what it was originally.

Prices fall over time and not to mention there is retail mark-up and the manufacturer has to make a profit as well.

"All I know is, Sony has sold MORE PS3s then MS has sold 360's when you compare LIKE timelines."

That's probably right, as in that's all you know. With the recent XBOX 360 price cuts, it's becoming clear Sony will not win in terms of sales, unless the PS3 has the claimed 10 year lifespan and the price eventually comes down to $200 range.

Sony needs to have 2 models, a basic core system like the new 80gb model for $350, and a permanent model with backward compatibility and 120gb hard drive to compete with the 360 elite priced at $500.

While you already get a great value getting a PS3 for $400, the high price prevents many people from ever getting one.

So you base an ENTIRE consoles life on ONE MONTH of sales? You really are nothing but a child.

"unless the PS3 has the claimed 10 year lifespan and the price eventually comes down to $200 range."

And you base that one what? For TWO YEARS the PS3 sold better then the 360. But now all of a sudden it needs to be more then half the price in order to continue based on dollar figures from the beginning?

"Sony needs to have 2 models, a basic core system like the new 80gb model for $350, and a permanent model with backward compatibility and 120gb hard drive to compete with the 360 elite priced at $500."

» silly idea

Sony do not need a core model of the PS3. They did that with the 20GB model and realised that it was a bad idea and I'm glad they didn't offer it in the UK/EU.

I don't think many people still care about BC now. Personally I would be happier if PS3's came with 4 USB slots again. If they did, I would buy another one. Being able to connect multiple devices via USB at the same time is far more valuable than BC.

1.blu-ray - ive never seen a blu-ray payer cost less then 250$ - I don't use BD, because the discs cost too much. It's far cheaper to simply stream high-def video. It is a nice drive, though. Shame the PS3 has the oldest, slowest model imagineable, and it'd be a lot smarter to simply buy a new Toshiba or Olevia BD player for 200$ (And in some places, cheaper than that now.)

2.harddrive- i think a 80 gig is atleast worth 100$ - An 80gb at the r/w speed of the PS3 costs roughly 15$ to produce.

3.Its way better than the peace of crap we call trhe wii - Opinions aren't really suitable to checklists of 'why'. The Wii outsells just about everything. Its games move, as well, and there are far more on 'must get' lists worldwide than anything the PS3 or 360 have. Apparently, the world thinks otherwise.

4.It has dvd i have never seen a dvd player cost less than 25$ - You can buy DVD players for 15$ at brandsmart.

5.wireless controller-Though 360 has it to its cery cool - Yes, every console pretty much boasts a wireless control at this point. (And, sorry, sixaxis was a bust, hence they made the dualshock 3.)

6. it has dual core - Shame the cores dont sync well, nor is their highend very high at all. Look up 'PS3 as a supercomputer' on google, there is a nice data analysis on the ps3 processing power.

7.1080p while 360 is 720p - This one is funny. 80% of 360 games ship with 1080p support. Less than 15% of PS3 releases support anything above 1080i. Don't believe me? Look at the back of your game boxes. I'm hardpressed to even think of 5 PS3 games that support 1080p at the moment. (I want to say MGS4, Fallout 3, LBP, Resistance 2.. but I'm not even 100% sure on those ones.)

8.Its deffinately the more sexy console - It looks like a chromed out toaster oven.

9.built in wifi has to be atleast worth 50 bucks - Everyone boasts about the built in wifi. All the good, surely. Yet in a lot of areas, I can't even use wifi. Areas of high humidity and static have terrible signal quality and gaming suffers. During any kind of storm, even one remote from your location, wireless can be effected. If your console isn't within wired distance of your router, you're asking for blackout periods.

10. I can play nes games on it (through bd-j) - This is what a PSP is for. ..Ahem.

I summary, all the current gen consoles and handhelds are excellent. They all offer something worthwhile. I'm a 'gamer', not a 'PS3er' or a '360er'. I game to game, and love any good game that comes out.

PS3 is losing the financial war, though, Their sales numbers are terrible, the fact that they've lost a lot of exclusives to the 360 in the US market proves that (SE swapping FFXIII and SO4 comes to mind.)

I don't really care if they think it's worth every penny: The consumer doesn't. Without consumer support, developers will make less. Making less on a console that costs more to develop for. (As the PS3 does, due to its quirky architecture) will really only hurt the library. Which sucks, as the PS3 has promise.

As it stands, the 360 has a 30% userbase, the PS3 a 20%, and the Wii has the other 50%. Oddly, its a close race. Reminds me of ol snes vs genesis.. ahh, memories.
