kmMicrosoft announced yesterday that Kinect has already sold 2.5 million units since its launch earlier this month. Now, it's Sony's turn to show off their numbers - how did the PlayStation Move do? As you might expect, it's a bigger number for Move. But that's not the whole story.

According to the press release, Sony Moved 4.1 million units worldwide. With 41.6 PS3s sold, there's about one Move for every ten PS3s out there. Sony notes that this number makes their motion controller launch a success, plus it gives them positive momentum to sell more during the holidays and as the calendar moves to 2011.

comparisons aside, Move did have a very good launch. if that's the case, then the word-of-mouth marketing that they'll be counting on should work very well for them.. or was that just a pre-launch blurb?

You dont need a big ass livingroom that need rearangeing everytime you want to game.
Så Move has a point there, im waiting for the bette games, as i already have a wii.
But if they can get good supported games out, it could be the Wii HD people have been wanting.

Yup. I borrowed my buddies 360 to try out my Kinect (which I bought for my PC to mess around with) and come to find out, my couch is too close to my TV. No go!

The distance to my couch is 8 feet. What happens then is you have to stand up against the couch. All I have to play with is 2 feet. Clearly that's no good for the average Kinect title.

So I couldn't use it if I wanted to.

They didn't pull the numbers out of their ass, so they sure mean something. Care to elaborate on that statement, nerd?

Cuz it makes the Xbox fanboys cry. Not really they'll just make an excuse on how stupid it is, and the 2 million people who bought them.

Am I the only one who thinks these sales numbers are pretty low? Move should have sold quite a bit more than this considering if you want the full experience in most games it takes x2 move units per player. I know I bought two just for sports champions.

I guess if you want the real percentage of PS owners have a move, you would have to cut those numbers by quite a bit. Looks like kinect, an overpriced webcam, is the one with the better launch, at least for now.

i was thinking the same thing though. i think most people bought at least 2 move controllers, so i wonder how they calculate those numbers...

When MS says they have sold 2.5 million units is that to actual game system owners or to retail outlets that still have them on the pallets.

That is to retail only. Very few retailers support POS information so it would be impossible for them to know what exactly made it into homes.

Microsoft has halfway caught up to Sony's Wiimote in a few weeks, when Sony decided to require multiple purchases to get functionality from it and people think Sony's doing better? Just wait until they remove the move feature, then you have 4-8 glowing dildos floating around your living room that you spent hundreds of dollars for.
At least with Kinect you can later just plug it into your computer.

Are people REALLY still that hungover about them removing Linux? Jesus, get over it already.

What's done is done.

I think what needs to be kept in mind is that the number of move units more than likely includes every different SKU for Move. That means Move Controllers, Navigation Controllers, Cameras, and Move system bundles all count towards this number. This isn't the first time we've seen questionable sales numbers, and it certainly won't be the last.

Just keep in mind that just because you like a company doesn't mean that their marketing department is above using fudged numbers to encourage fantardism on either side of the fence.

Just keep it civil for now. These early numbers are fairly meaningless. We'll see if the hardcore crowd get into it by mid next year and proper sales numbers start showing up.

Doesn't help that we don't get the NPDs anymore though. That just flat-out sucks.

Thats odd it would be called a success, they really had no good launch games. I don't know anyone who was even remotely interested in the Move.
