Sony replaces Emotion Engine for European PS3s

PS3_box - Image 1Back in February, we reported that the European version of the PlayStation 3 (PS3) will not be sporting the Emotion Engine + Graphics Synthesizer, the same chip that powers the PlayStation 2 (PS2). Needless to say, this will greatly impact the system's backwards compatibility.

One Sony Computer Entertainment representative clarified that the move was to lessen the company's expenses. "The European version will not carry a Sony-made microchip that offers graphic- and data-processing functions for PS2 games, cutting production costs," explained the spokesperson.

However, the Sony spokesperson assured fans that aside from the promised firmware updates, the European version of the console will sport a different chip that will somehow cushion the blow of the removal of the above mentioned one.

He remarked, "The console will still be equipped with a different chip that processes graphics for PS2 games, but the backward compatibility of the machine will be lessened."

» Nobody

How can they justify this as 'cutting production costs' in Europe and then charging more for the console than anywhere else in the world.

Surely if your going to cut production costs the unit cost should drop - not be higher!

» an emulator?

If PS3 has Linux, Linux as PS2 emulator, you can use a PS2 emulator on Linux on PS3. if normal system cant support a game

» Emotion Engine

The Emotional engine is basically a separate processor. They can easily just have 2, or all, SPE's doing what the Emotion Engine does with coding. Or they can just come up with a PS2 emulator of their own and have the emulator be compataible with the SPE's in the cell. This will lower the production costs not by a lot, but when you total up the cuts with the 60/65 nm(i forget which) Cell, it's a pretty good chunk for selling. They could drop the price by $100 if they're lucky.

» Sorry, but your games WILL WORK

Damn, calm down people. Because they cut the production cost a few months later, they can lose less money on the console. Sorry, this is a business ya know? And it's an incredible product. 1000 of the top PS2 games playing at launch with more to come will definitely play all your top favorites, and it is a hell of a lot better than the x360 support. The emulator will be FINE for all you guys, and we will all be running emulated PS2 games soon enough.

Just deal with it, and buy the damn thing. You can't spend your money on another console and even come close to the ps3.

» Sucks to be you~

Also sucks to be the guy waiting for an iso loader, LoL, you'll be one step behind all the time. (It's different for the PSP because we have DA, but how do you expect to hack the PS3 when devs complain about programing games for it? :))

» VAT

You people know what VAT taxes are? its the tax that the government impliments on electronics when they're being imported from other countries, thus forcing people to buy european electronics. But europeans dont make game consoles, therefore europeans are forced to pay higher prices. Sony is trying to help the europeans from breaking their swiss bank accounts.
