Sony questions Microsoft claim that Xbox 360 GTA 4 is outselling the PS3 version

It seems that Rockstar North's Grand Theft Auto 4 is controversial in more ways than one. On one hand, Aaron Greenberg of Microsoft has claimed that the Xbox 360 version of the game is outselling the PS3 version two-to-one. On the other hand, SCEA is questioning this very claim.

The director of product management for Xbox 360 and Xbox Live of Microsoft drew upon Xbox Live figures, statistics and anecdotes from retail partners to back up his statement. He suggested that the exclusive downloadable content coming for GTA 4 may be a factor in the Xbox 360 version's success.

SCEA, for its part, said that Microsoft's statement "doesn't line up" with what Sony has heard from its own retailers, though SCEA didn't specify exactly what it has heard. Sony also argued that the Grand Theft Auto series has its deep roots in the PlayStation brand.

At this point, both Sony and Microsoft have yet to release the hard sales figures. Perhaps there's only one way to really tell for sure: to wait until the NPD Group's April sales data report comes in and then draw conclusions from that.

DLC was a factor for me. Along with the game being developed for the 360 first (lead platform). XBox live online play hasn't suffered teething problems like the PSN service.

There are pluses and minuses, but I guess you have to look at the install base really. I predict that the 360 will sell more units over the 1st 3 months of sales here in the UK.

Incidentally I am a Sony beta tester, so don't really favour either console (much).

At the Game Crazy I work at we sold at least three times more copies on 360 as on PS3 on launch night. My question is what exactly are the benefits for getting it on the PS3? It has worse resolution than the 360 (690p vs 720p), and it doesn't have the dlc.

I don't think so because the PS3 was the leading platform unlike the majority of the production. Probably the 360 will sell a little more than the PS3 but this is a victory if you think the install base.

And the DLC will be only episodes and I don't think is a big difference for a big game like that. And many people don't pay for thing that don't need.

I don't know if it was like this anywhere else, but I went to two different stores on launch day (Futureshop to pick up some blank CDs and EB Games to pick-up GTA IV) and, at both locations, the 360 version of the game was displayed PROMINENTLY. Like, at Futureshop, they had an entire rack at the front of the store fully devoted to it.

Out of curiousity, I glanced around for the PS3 version and... it was nowhere in sight.

Now, even if Microsoft is right about out-selling Sony, it isn't much of a competition if one side is buying more shelf space and stocking more units. Especially when one company's next-gen console has been around for a significantly longer and has a larger userbase on that front.

If your going to be a fanboy and defend your system to the death at least know what your talking about. In fact, the PS3 version of GTA4 runs at a native 630p, but upscales to 1080p, however it does so much better than the Xbox360 with 2xAA at 720p native res, because of some rather impressive filters R* have included in the PS3 game.

@wilmheath - Yes, the 360 has a higher native resolution however the PS3 has ADDITIONAL quality factors built in that pushes it over the edge. So it would seem YOU need to ALSO "know what you're talking about". The 360 does not have such QUALITY FACTORS because it can NOT handle them.

@sickofitall - Bingo! I've not only read what you mentioned but have seen it myself. PS3 looks better and loads slightly faster.

So the end result is, do you want something that looks a little better and loads a little faster or do you want DLC. That choice is up to each user.

At any rate, there is no way to know which is selling more at this point in time. Not all sales figures have been collected. However, based on userbase alone I would expect the 360 to win that overall number.

HOWEVER!!! That doesn't tell us anything. Go further and look at the RATIO of GTA4 sales versus the RATIO of consoles and you'll have a very good indication of which version of GTA4 is selling better then the other.

Good point! I went to my local Gamestop two days ago and I remember seeing all the 360 cases and displays. Yet, I don't recalling seeing a single PS3 version.....

I laugh whenever i see someone getting upset about being called a fanboy...all it means is that you happen to love what system your talking about because its the system that most fits your taste in gaming/games. why do people take it so serious....im glad to say im a ps3 fanboy....my first system was PS1 and i bet most of all 360 owners have had one to. i grew up with playstation and im not ashamed of being called a fanboy. Im proud! i like the games on sony systems...whats so wrong about that?

I'd never shout or boast that PS3 is better cuz personally I wish i still had my 360 (sold it to a friend for a ps3) cuz id love to be able to play multiplayer with all my friends (they all have 360) and the DLC for GTAIV. Well, i still don't own a ps3 or an xbox 360 but im waiting for the price to go down a little.. im happy with my current systems; playstation, playstation 2 and fat psp. People forget that the main reason the PS3 costs so much is because it includes a Blu-Ray player out the box... 360's HD-DVD drive is an optional addon. Maybe PS3 would sell more it the BluRay drive was optional, but all the games are on BD.

YOU ARE DUMB. The 360 at one time only supported 1080i, but back in fall 2006 it was patched to support 1080p, but as it has been stated, neither console plays GTAIV at 1080p, even if it says it on the box.

The PS3 is not the most powerful gaming machine you can get, the PC is and always will be. You do end up with a marginally better product than the 360 though, unless you're willing to pay for Live, at which point the 360 becomes better.

In Europe and Japan (Besides the UK), the PS3 version will most likely sell better than the 360 version. Xbox 360 isn't doing as well as PS3 in those regions.

I don't know which version sold better so far, but it wouldn't surprise me if the X360 version sold more so far. 360 has a lead over PS3 in the US.

As for the graphical discussion, IGN said that the PS3 version has a slight edge in the graphics department, so I got that version. Free online play is a good deal for me. Besides the release day I haven't had any problems playing Multiplayer.

Oh and PS3 is getting DLC as well, but we don't know what it is. The Playstation magazine confirmed those old rumors about a month ago.

Both versions can upscale to 1080p, fool! You don't need the 360 Elite, the new ones have HDMI, and even the old ones output it through componenet and VGA.

Sounds like you have no idea what you're talking about. Quality factors? WTF? I heard the PS3 version looks better and loads faster, but it does not mean the 360 can support nameless quality factors.
