Sony: PS3 Firmware v3.21 coming this April, "Other OS" feature removed

Sony has announced that next firmware update for the PS3 will be released on April 1, 2010 and will disable the “Install Other OS” feature due to security concerns. According to Patrick Seybold, Sr. Director, Corporate Communications & Social Media, this move was done to ensure the PS3 community will continue enjoy the broad range of contents on a more secure system:

This feature enabled users to install an operating system, but due to security concerns, Sony Computer Entertainment will remove the functionality through the 3.21 system software update.

In addition, disabling the “Other OS” feature will help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system.

Consumers and organizations that currently use the “Other OS” feature can choose not to upgrade their PS3 systems, although the following features will no longer be available;

Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat

Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later

Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings)

Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later

Sony also reminded those PS3 owners who are currently using the “Other OS” feature but schoose to install the system software update, you will need to back-up your data stored within the hard drive partition used by the “Other OS,” to avoid data loss as you will not be able to access that data following the system update.

Seeing as how it's NOT April 1st yet, that would be a pretty lame ass joke don't you think?

You think A LOT of people aren't going to like this? I think only a handful of people even give a damn about this feature. And about half of those probably just don't care anymore. And half of the other half have probably moved on to the PS3 slim.

One huge reason for purchasing a PS3 was its varied capabilities. I've installed ubuntu, and while it serves little purpose, it has amused me as much as a purchased games has (and in that regard is a far greater use of my time!). I am horified that Sony should disable this feature. Would they disable a game that I have purchased that turns out to have a vulnerability? What next? disable ps2 compatibility?!!!

It’s not really a big deal. I tried the Linux install on my PS3 & it was way too slow. Linux does not have access to all the memory & CPU/GPU power. Even just browsing the Internet was painfully slow. Your not losing much.
But I wished they had upgrade it and support it more instead of removing it.

Unless you're hoping for GeoHot hack.

but why for a home console as big as PS3?!

Almost every emulator u want u can get already for PC (any mid-core PC could do).. and easily can be hooked up to TV screen.

(need registration on this site), very good. U don´t need to install linux, only a small piece of software (otheros.bld) on ps3 , and the rest of software and the emulator are installed on a PEN drive. only that. it´s simple.

i have this emulator installed on my phat ps3 40GB and it works

i can play: pang, super pang, toki, shinobi, shadow dancer, outzone, outrun, pinball, etc.

p.s.: cammon sony, don´t do that. Let´s the homebrew grow (and i don´t mean piraty games), but the community who loves their machine and want to explore the potencials of ps3. New themes, new open software. Imagine, homebrew software to chat, talk/video, like skype or similar sooftw... and much more.

1- no 3D, No hardware acceleration , no OpnenGL(because a hypervisor restricting access to the GPU.)

2- You can't do much multitasking or run any RAM intensive applications.( Linux have access to only to 256 MB of the fast main memory and some say only 200mb of it. can't access the other 256 MB dedicated to the GPU)

3- the Cell processor was optimized for number-crunching, it is perfect for applications that need a heavy amount of number-crunching which is really good for research project and rendering. But Linux operating system isn't designed like that, you won't see it magical became faster because it run under the Cell.

So it is really limited for normal computer users. but still remain good choice for anyone can utilize the power of the Cell.

PS3 was doing fine until geohotz had to bypass the hypervisor making Sony pull the killswitch and that backdoor was OtherOS Linux.

But then again, how many people uses OtherOS other then scientifical calculations. Thats going to piss non-gamers.

But lets look at the positive side: This is a challenge for hackers. PSP's been hacked, Wii's been hacked, 360's been hacked, PS3 was just getting started after what? 3 years since launch? Both 360 didn't require OtherOSes. How long have they've been working on PS3's RSX gpu access?

Now that its going to be harder, hackers have to do a lot more work. For those who upgraded, it will be a while till you get your custom firmware.

PS3 has not been hacked since launch. Only now it is possible.

When Sony allowed linux in Other OS, enthusiasts, geeks, hackers, had some freedom to access PS3's hardware but not the GPU acceleration because of the hypervisor. The reason is because there is a possibility to create emulators. GPU opensource drivers like Nouveau for PS3 is hasn't changed much and still does not offer the feature of an unlocked GPU.

Until recently, the hypervisor has been comprised and can be exploited in Other OS. It has been 3 years and only now it was possible.

But by Sony removing Other OS, that will INCREASE reasons to hack the PS3. Modchip developers will be in business again, downgradable firmware, custom firmware, etc.

Sony's got to choke you a bit to get you to retaliate. Its been a while and its been stagnant in the hacker community.

I agree, if they are worried about pirated games, there is only a certain percentage that can do it, let alone know how to do it (it's still super complicated for the average user right now)

Considering the boom in PS3 sales happened with the slim, most people and more into the future will just own slims without the ability to install an other OS.

Still I can see where they are coming from, not wanting any modified software out there at all. Look at MW2 on the 360....because ppl can alter code and still play the game it messes with many other peoples game experience....

It's been said elsewhere, and I couldn't possibly agree more... The security of the PS3 is Sony's problem, not the user's. Everyone who bought a PS3 before the slims came out paid money for a certain feature set, and they're crippling it after the fact.

There's nobody to blame here but Sony. You can try to point the finger at whatever other group you'd like, but Sony implemented the feature, Sony couldn't find a better way to keep their console secure without screwing over customers, and Sony is the one who is going to remove a feature that some people have bought several PS3s just to take advantage of.

I'm expecting to see a class-action lawsuit if they don't pull this update, and it's one that I'm more than happy to be a part of.

DON'T bash Geohot, he just discovered an exploit compatible with all models and firmware versions, which so far is one of the major achievements in the PS3 hacking history. He said that it was up to other hackers to find whether it could be used for running homebrew or not, so it was like setting the basis for other people. "It never turned out to be useful"? Hacking does take some time, so you never know, the PSP hacking wasn't instant neither, the ISO emulation was one the last things created, back in the time you could consider yourself lucky if you had a Snes emulator running. If you are so desperate for results do it for yourself: hackers have no obligation to give us normal people anything.

Removing the PS2-support was acceptable (600 to 300 dollars/euros (Europeans love being ripped off... Not.)), but the PS3 no longer does 'Everything' (especially the Slim version).

I think this is a joke, though.

I'm not gonna discuss if the otherOS feature is useful or not. I already did that on the previous blog post. What I'm gonna say here is that it is a bad precedent to remove a function that's already on our PS3s. Even more so because it's a function that came with it from the factory. It was not an added function that came later like "in game xmb" and others. If gamers allow this to go unnoticed then the message will be delivered that they can take away whatever they want from our PS3s. I know that we are not obligated to install such update, but the consequences of not doing so are the same. PS3 functionality will be reduced.

Even if Geohot's exploit was able to do something, which it can't now, the percentage who would go through the hassle to do so, heck the people who are even able to because of being on a Slim or not having the technical know-how, would be so low that it wouldn't affect the sales of games, even if it did lead to piracy. By making sending this message though, they are essentially declaring war, and the pirates will take this as a direct challenge, and will work harder to find a way to open this up for the masses.

So thank you Sony, and thank you Geohot. Seriously GH, stick to the iPhone where you are GOD, and release a jailbreak for iPhone 4.0 OS on the iPhone 4G, but you should have stayed away from my PS3, I was perfectly happy with what it could do and buying games for it, I was fine with it being the only system I hadn't hacked. So funny reading all these hateful comments. If someone bought the PS3 for otherOS that's fine. Everyone can have their reasons for purchasing a PS3 there isn't a wrong reason. Grow up people.

In Sonys defense if this is actually real they have every right to secure their interest in the market to prevent piracy.

I'm not going to say everyone will be pirates but lets face the truth the exploit does have the possibility to go down that road.

It's the first of many hurdles I'm sure but as with many thing there is always the first step.

The only reason I wanted the otherOS feature was in the hopes for some actually PS2 emulation on the PS3 in the future.

It's been ages since we heard anything from Sony on this. And I've basically lost hope.

Without hackers, there is no security, hell the system alone would be non-existent. This means little other than, not buying a PS3 and waiting for the games to be dirt cheap and/or waiting for that gateway. One way or another, we win, they claim it's so the consumer will have a better end experience well just like the PSP for me, I can wait untill all the good stuff comes out if that's the case. The PS3 is a "future" console anyways, lol.

Knowing them they will do it. They WILL get sued for it. The false advertising past of such a case is rock solid. Then they will get bulldozed for it.

Let's ask ourselves how many features were removed from systems (the PS2 HDD removal still sets me off), this generation unfortunately they can remove them from old systems.

So anyone want to start a class action law suit or maybe even a good prosecutor to try Criminal Fraud charges (especially where they took tax exemptions for "Computers" I don't even have to explain the tax fraud implications of that remember yabasic wasn't enough to get the exemption in EU/Australia).

The first part of my prediction came true I just hope we don't let them screw us over again. this decision has me seriously considering NOT buying any further systems from Sony.

1: If you decide to cancel a Preorder because of this or anything similar tell them why and then transfer the preorder to (where it exists) another systems version of the same title.

2: Related When possible don't buy a Sony system version of any title and don't buy Licensed accessories, If you must buy one get it used as publishers hate used game sales or buy it once the price drops.

3: No Online Petitions or other stupid antics. they don't work and they are feel-good measures.

4: Tell everyone you know about the about this even if they do not use linux, if allowed to get away with this any company can remove any advertised function without consequences, will we have to wait until a OS manufacturer disables disc writing functionality at the driver level or something like that?

%: Find a lawyer or represent yourself there are so many legal problems with this move by Sony that anyone could prove guilt and damages. This would not be a legal issue for Sony if they had not advertised the Other OS function as part of the product, AND took tax exemptions using the function prior to removing it, shouldn't they have to pay taxes on the systems affected?

Feel free to repost this as a plan of action.

If you do decide to upgrade, in order to recoup the 10 Gigs of space partitioned for linux; you need to back up your data on both partitions [linux and gameos] and reformat your hard drive.

I'm not sure if I'm going to try to wait it our for a while or not. I use Other OS for emulators and becasue the web browser is better than the gameos browser.

I am a PS3 slim user so no risk updating, was kinda hoping that the big joke would be that instead of robbing the phats that the slims would get Otheros

Now I can't confirm that Otheros is gone, but as I can see NO other changes to my system, it seems that Sony was indeed robbing their users of a function
