ps3 - Image 1 Earlier today, VG247 posted a rumor about the upcoming PS3 Firmware 3.0, which they describe as a huge overhaul for the console that will have major features just like NXE and is expected to be released before Christmas. But Sony quickly shut down the rumor and flatly denied any news pertaining to the upcoming PS3 firmware update.

According to the source from VG247, the PS3 Firmware 3.0 will be a completely new system for the console and will feature a reputation system in which users will be able to evaluate each other, and will be provided for game applications. IT will also have a new API so that the user can allow other users and obtain users reputation.

A grief reporting system will also be included that will allow gamers to take screens of offensive players and submit them to Sony. The firmware will also allow patches to be downloaded in the background, meaning youÂ’ll no longer have to sit staring at the screen while Random Shooter updates itself with a 500Mb fix. A simultaneous HDMI and digital optical outputting will be included in the release.

VG247 claims they've been told that there are a lot more features and will be revealed soon. But a Sony rep released a statement  and told gaming site Joystiq that the rumors are completely untrue and nothing has been announced or confirmed for the upcoming Playstation firmware, and this is just wild speculation.

Usually companies like Sony say no comment. By saying that it's not true it for me it's they are hiding something very big maybe even bigger than what has been said.

So far we haven't seen ANY major updates that added all this kind of content at one time. Besides the rumors about firmware 2.0 (which obviously didn't give us much) I don't think theres enough in the past to make us believe it'll happen.

If these features do make it in the ps3 I think it'll be spread out between the firmwares.

But yeah.. Hopefully I'm wrong and their just lying or decide to change up their style this time around ^.^

yea, i remember when there were rumors of the psp-go and yet sony tried to hid that, when they do comment it usually means we are close, its like hot and cold, if your close to something good they freak out, (hot)

if your not close they dont care(cold)

Seriously the XMB is pretty good and simple to use. Just keep adding features to would would suffice. Changing the whole thing would be a waste of Sony's money and time.

Or logic indicates it's completely not true...

When a company flat out denies something it's probably not going to happen. It's when they say 'no comment' that you have to question why they didn't just flat out deny it, if it weren't true.

that rumor was pretty fleshed out... could be true, kinda hope so! but the XMB is fine i think...

I'm happy about any update.. as long as it doesn't just "improve BD playback"... especially with 2.80 that was the case... i though it would be bigger since it was a jump from 2.76 (or so) to 2.80 :(

Should have been obvious that was fake. The rumor I found and reported was much more credible and likely.

This is from the same guy correctly predicted 2.80s release date. He says 2.80 just set the foundation for 3.00. 3.00 is supposed to actually have cross-game voice chat and invites.

He then goes on to provide details on the slim. read the link.

Background patching isn't possible.

Well it's possible to download the patch data in the background (like any movie or demo) and then install it after, or the next time you start the game.

Downloading the patch in the backround isn't entirely a bad Idea. But, then again, any FW is welcome as they're either adding new features or fixing bugs and stability issues.

When will people realize that Sony rarely, if ever, holds to the standard practice that major releases require a change to the first digit of the firmware number? Sony's standard firmware numbering process doesn't follow this tradition at all. They simply add .01 to the version number with each successive build, regardless of the amount of content added/changed. The reason we see gaps in released firmware numbers is because many builds never get released to the public and are intermediate builds for in-house test purposes. These intermediate builds may not get released for a variety of reasons such as stability issues or inclusion of modules that are still in beta-test for internal testing purposes.

Sony has never ever had a release on the PS3 or PSP where they've said, "Oh, this is a big change from the last release, so let's go from 1.x to 2.0 or 2.x to 3.0 unless that x.0 release coincidentally happened to fall at the same time as the next increment in their firmware numbering standards. When will you get it through your heads, people, that this is how Sony does things?

Thanks for the link! I do find it hard to believe that a guy would risk his job to tell that .... but maybe it's an "intended leak" to get some buzz going. That would be a nice load-out for v3.0. Some of the rumors in the QJ article COULD also be true, however. It's pretty clear that the 'forced foreground download' for patches could use an overhaul (sure would be nice to be able just to select a list of patches to download and let it roll overnight -- I have more than 1 PS3, and for LAN parties, I always forget a patch sometime/somewhere/for some game.) --Still, there's no way that the PS3's interface needs an "NXE -style" redo. Microsoft made NXE as a response to both PS3's + Nintendo's interfaces, not because they 'just felt like updating the whole user interface' for the heck of it. 360 had a REALLY unintuitive interface, and now with NXE they made it *slightly* more-intuitive.
