Sony promises to fix PS3's 720p issues |
Ó
It looks like PS3 owners will be getting their resolution issues patched up. Sony's now working on a way to resolve the 720p downscaling that occurs in some older high-definition television (HDTV) sets. Now, we've mentioned the little issues the PS3 seems to be having with games meant for 720p before. Basically, older HDTV models supported 480p and 1080i resolutions, but not 720p. Games meant to be played in 720p resolution get scaled down on some of those older TVs, "kicking down" the visuals to 480p resolution rather than bumping the quality up to 1080i.
Sony currently says that the problem is more of an issue on the side of the TVs rather than the console itself, but they're going to be fixing the problem as best they can. A date for the fix wasn't specified, but the fix is meant to be a future firmware download, so it shouldn't be too problematic for PS3 owners to resolve once the fix is out.
Of course, if you don't own an HDTV, HDMI cables, and a PS3, then you've got absolutely nothing to worry about. Fancy that.

I'm so happy. I'm one of those few that have a 480i, 1080i HDTV.
Scaling native 720p content to 1080i IS NOT "bumping the quality up". Scaling 720p to 1080i means decreasing vertical resoulution and (at best!) preservering the horisontal resoultion (with some scaling artefacts).
Errr
Good thingmy television does 480p, 720p, 1080i, and oh wait, can it be, oh yes it is... 1080PPPPPPPPPPP! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!
Sony no matter what anyone says about you I love you. You put me through hell on launch day, but I love you. You took all my money but I love you. You waited so long to "put out" the PS3, but i love you.kinda remind me of my girlfriend. And I occasionally cheat on her, like I occasionally cheat on you (Xbox360). But I still love ya...

oh whack, when are they gonna fix the issue on how to use the ps3 on my existing 1280x1024 lcd monitor?
it only has two inputs, basic 15 pin and dvi
no proper cable has been out and i dont want to fork out extra money on cable to other cable kind adaptors cause it degrades picture quality.
dude,
go to amazon.com and get a DVI - HDMI cable they are only like 10 bucks. one side is dvi the other is hdmi, works great and no loss of signal. Thank me later.

Vs down converting to 480p. They are not "bumping the quality up" , im not sure where you got that from. Its to prevent quality degredation of down converting from 720p to 480p. I would much prefer a up converted 1080i picture to a down converted 480p picture.
Its funny how arogent Sony is. They are promising a fix, but its not a issue with the console, but the TVs. Um, yea..your console doesnt upconvert, but its the TVs problem.
But out of the good of your heart, your going to patch the console to fix problems with TVs.
Yawn, just admit you messed up Sony, and quit lieing to me. You can fix it right, so why pass the blame??
All sony hdtv crts from 2001 and before do 1080i, but not 720p. This is really stupid for a company to release a product which is incompatible with its own TVs
does the PS3 only work on HDTV's? I know to get optimum quality you would need an HDTV, but is it madatory.
o and the price, ill wait until it goes down a bit
PS3 works with any TV that the PS1 or PS2 worked with. All the TV needs is composite cable outlets, and the proper cables come with the PS3.
how do you find out what resolution your tv has?
hehe, I have a 1080p tv... HDMI cables.... and no ps3 ='(
I was really worried about this as I have an older TV with this problem. I was actually waiting to hear sony's word on it becuase I was seriously considering getting an xbox360. Now I'm going PS3 all the way baby!
