Sony Producer Bunting: Do whatever with PlayTV as long as it's legal |
Ó
One of the biggest additions to the PlayStation 3 to date is PlayTV, an add-on device which allows users to record television programs on the hard drive of their consoles. With that said, Sony felt like a few more explanations are needed.
According to Sony Cambridge Studio Producer Mark Bunting, who is working on the software for the PlayTV device, said that users can do anything what they want as long as they do it within the bounds of legality.
It is clear that the producer is referring to the rampant piracy occurring in several peer-to-peer networks. With the capabilities of the device, it is not impossible that it will be used as a new venue for piracy. Bunting further explained:
We've talked to our legal department about it. All we're doing is moving it out of PlayTV and to the cross-media bar as if it was any other recording. So hopefully users won't do stuff they shouldn't do with it.
If I'm prohibited from getting the recording off and storing it somewhere else because some other dude is making money out of selling it, then I'd rather they brought the law in to catch those people.
PlayTV is expected to launch this Spring in some territories with the official pricing yet to be confirmed.

too bad here in Puerto Rico we will not have digital thing until the beginning of 2009 or the end this year
cause we won't get it in Canada :(
I don't really watch all that much TV, but if this is adequately priced I might pick it up...
This is the way it SHOULD be done! I expect sales for this unit to be "at least" slightly higher then others.
Please Please PLEASE Sony release this in the US!!!!
North America doesn't have the proper video broadcasts that this device needs in order for this to work. Sorry, I would love to have it myself as well but I too live in the US.
I can't believe it!!! At last something gets released here in the UK before US (if ever?) Now you know how we feel!
It's kind of an exclusive in a sense to certain places. I know US, PR, and Canada arent getting it.. UK is getting it and thats about it (I know theres a few other places).

It's a Tivo for the PS3. We've already had these types of things for years now. If someone really wanted to use the features PlayTV has then they more than likely already have.
Come on Sony were already mostly digital now I mean my house is wired for Cox cable digital with a box that has net tv and phone man if it comes to the US then its a free tivo system :) which my parent may like :)
lol like they will be able to stop the piracy they always find a way to do it.
