Sony President Ken Kutaragi: "The World Has Underestimated our Progress" |
Ó
The PS3 has been receiving some blows from techies and critics for being too expensive and for the company's being unclear about, say, software development and the possibility of downloadable content. Seemingly to correct this, in a recent interview with Japanese magazine NikkeiBP, Sony President Ken Kutaragi gamely shared some new things about the PS3.Mr. Kutaragi talked about the scenario wherein gamers who will buy the PS3 would have to wait to get their hands on titles that could take advantage of it. He said that "in the 20 years IÂ’ve worked in the gaming industry, I have never seen so many titles in the playable phase." Apparently, 10 titles will be launched that are up to speed with the PS3's hardware, contrary to Sony President Kaz Hirai's prediction of 15 titles. He continued by saying that "the world has obviously underestimated our progress in software development. ItÂ’s likely that many shook their heads in disbelief at seeing the large number of titles actually working before their eyes."
He also talked about his favorite title among the initial 10 that will be apt for the PS3. The game is Eye of Judgment- a card based game that takes advantage of the PS3's eye toy camera to read the cards. According to the Sony President, "the current camera is a VGA unit—think of the possibilities if we could use an HD camera or what we could accomplish by having the camera read something other than a card." Indeed, the possibilities are ever-flowing.
He again emphasized that the PS3 is a computer and he answered inquiries with regards to the comparison of PCs and the PS3. "“Computers are a prime example of “Too Large” and “Too Serious.” Yet the software industry is by no means growing smaller. Some titles with dozens of thousands of people working on them do end up with delayed releases, but on the other hand, there are plenty of examples of small teams successfully developing new software. The industry as a whole is growing. The PlayStation 3 is a computer, so the same rules should apply.”"
He also welcomes the idea of rampant PS3 upgrades, which is consistent with his earlier statements. “As the PlayStation 3 is a computer, we might even offer it on a built-to-order basis, customized to the needs of each and every user,” said Kutaragi. “The hardware components have been designed in a modularized format with this possibility in mind.”
Lastly he also answered questions with regards to networkability and online delivery of the PS3. A major concern that popped out is the limited hard drive space on the console—merely 20GB to 60GB. Users who want to own several games may find themselves running out of space in the future. Mr. Kutaragi was frank with his reply: “some users will definitely run out of hard drive space, depending on how they use their console.” As a solution to that concern he continued by saying that “such users will have the option of purchasing larger-capacity hard drives. We may be releasing 120GB drives by next year or the year after that.”
What do you think about these statements? Will hard drive space be a problem to you? Does Eye of Judgment seems like a winner or not? Tell us through your comments.

woot!
told u guys you cant just use any 500 gig hard drive on the ps3
So we could end up buying a bigger hard drive???
Then again what is going to be taking up all the space? Xbox360 has more than enough with 13gig.
Tight! I would buy the 120 Gig for 650 or 700 dollars.
Also Firmware upgrades will rock since Sony encourages Homebrew on the PS3!
Eye of Judgement looks great, but not $600 great. I will still like to own a PS3, but my wallet and my brain tells me to be patient.
if its like that then the 360 might as well be a pc too, since you can upgrade the harddrive in the near future, the dude that posted this article took that out (maybe to start another sony bashing). what mr. Kutaragi was saying is that the ps3 is upgradable by you can buy a larger HDD and by sony releasing firmwares thats all, and yes 60gig is not enough for me cause i will be upgrading and if what they said about the psp (being able to stream from ps3 to psp) is true, then 60gig will not be enough i've got more than 60gig's of media on my pc, unless theres a way to stream it from pc>ps3>psp.
to those ignorant ppl that will think that what he meant by upgrade is the RAM or graphic chip, that ***** will not happen. qj (chris) already has a post on that issue
out of the 10 launch titles, eye of judgement is not gonna be 1 of the best, if anything i say Resistance: Fall of Man. That game looks awesome and its not just ur basic WWII FPS that u keep seeing (not saying that titles like Call Of Duty and Medal of Honor arent any good, CoD 3 will rock!) and it has a nice twist in the storyline. If not that game, then Madden 07, Sonic or Strangle Hold will prolly be the best titles.
why are you using my name mehn, ***** aint cool. you made some nice points but dammit stop posting under my name this is the second time.
sucker
Seriously.
Nice twist of words.
He said that they, at SCEI have already 10 launch titles, not that there will be 10 launch titles in general.
There's also a nice twist about the upgrade - he just said that there will be firmware upgrades and exchangable HDD.
Since Mr Kutaragi said that the PS3 is a computer, would you be able to install Operating Systems onto the PS3?
PS3 is taking it this gen. Wii is going to be good too!
Xbox 360 is striaght up trash. Mine broke week after I got it!
I truly wonder how people got so ignorant.
Do you realize that with different versions of the PS3, developers then have to code for different kinds, or be forced to downgrade the software to work only on the basic system and nothing more? This either:
A. Drives up development costs
B. Causes the people who bought the "updated" systems never to see the realization of their hard earned cash in effect.
C. Makes it hard to keep on track with keeping your system up to date.
He also said that he has never seen so many playable games. Playable means that you can pick up a controller, run forward and jump, he did not say near complete games, I really expect the system to launch with about 7-8 games, mostly sports titles.

Computers come in different configs yet game makers make the game to run them just the same. There may be different configs of PS3's but they will all have the same CPu and GPU and general architecture.
Some may have more USB slots or more SD Card slots but the essentials will be the same. People aren't ignorant, you're just taking the word "configuration" to mean something completely different than what Ken used it to mean.
Yeah you can install Operating systems on it.
"As the PlayStation 3 is a computer, we might even offer it on a built-to-order basis, customized to the needs of each and every user,” said Kutaragi. “The hardware components have been designed in a modularized format with this possibility in mind.”
Xbox 360 is striaght up trash. Mine broke week after I got it!
ive had my xbox360 4 mths and mths and it still working fine
you will see the same with the ps3 when make con with cell
you will see 15% loss
and do u really think you can say what going to win when the ps3 not evein out yet ? no
will not win until it's price is matched with the 360. Economics says it doesn't happen.
Thats why there's something called OpenGL
#2 what ? Are you stupid ? He is just saying that their will put in a 120gb instead of 60gb later on eg.
economics says iPods shouldn't be selling that well also.
according to economics, economic bubbles shouldn't occur also.
***** economics. it's a disembodied gibberish that doesn't make sense, and is only a listing of past events
Well, I haven't been in the Sony/PS3 news lately, but I have a question that you stated, Sony said that they're supporting homebrew on the PS3? If that's so, they should also support homebrew on the PSP!!!! Nice stuff to hear. I've always been wanting to get the PS3 out of all the next-gen consoles that came out/coming out.
"you will see 15% loss"
@18, Why don't you pull a few more numbers out of your ass?
Kutaragi's is on step out of the game-console view. Sicromoft and Nintendo are in then game-console box.
Kutaragi think :
Give the user a 'nice' sytem, good games, allow homebrew and a good operating system (linux) .. shake all this incredients an kutaragi has the C64/Atari/Amiga effect !
Like PSX and PSP Kutaragi have seen that we want a system for play.
Not the games for XY cash .. no !
Stuff to develop (games/apps/demos) for the PS3 is the bigger game.
For us it's nicer to have a system with the newest homebrew and all this pimp stuff.
And not only have a console with expensive games.
meh .. ps3 to expensive ud be a *****ing nerd to get a ps3 and spend 600 bux.. seriously as if you need all that space and as if you need your ps3 to be a computer. we all have computer s at home that work just as well. im a nintendo guy now ps... uve let me down ..
^ lol...nerd to buy a system i have hopes for?
lol... hes no nerd! cant you tell??? i sure can by the way he spells some of his english
What the *****, does Sony have a Death Star floating around in orbit? We want a system, not some ***** trying to scratch his nuts on stage with an empty tin that says PS3. The Playstation may go the way of the Tucker automobile (If your a dumb*****, google it.)
What they should do is make a offical peace of hardware so we can link the PS3 to out PC's that way we will be able to back all out stuff on them. Also a program to help with the process. Becuase if they dont people will be hacking it as they have with the Xbox 360 to store saves/demos and there computer.
Another thing is that the Price im from the UK and i no there havent been no offical price for the UK market but on some site's (www.play.com) they are pre-ordering at £549.99 (About USD 1099.99). Witch is a really high price compared to the 360 at £210.
Dale_Man 2k5 (xfire = daleman)
wth thats fucucking rediculess 707$!!! screw that im never gonna pay that much for anything ide rather go buy a car.
I mean guys keep complaining about the price well let me tell you something u could always buy a 499 PS3 if you want to and you can upgrade it whenever you want. It is only 100 dollars more and it is worth it if you don't want the better 600 dollar system. Also if you look at it it is on par with the Premium 360. Another thing is that the PS3 will drop thier price sometime in 2007 when the shortages are over and done with and they begin having the system on stock then they will have the heating and the cell reduced and the PS3 will drop the price , and that is a perfect time to drop the price because all the great exclusives for the PS3 will be coming out (MGS 4, DMC 4 , KILLZONE 2, Assasins Creed, FF13, and veresus 13 , and much much more) I am exited about the Playstation 3 next year.
when i see you ppl crying about price, it makes me wonder if somebody has a gun all yall head and say its a must you have to buy a ps3 at launch. like fact man said theres a 500 version even at that its still expensive to some. but what pisses me off when i read all this post and ppl whinning is that you dont have to own the damn console on the first day, just wait till the price drops or just pick up a damn wii or 360 and close it. if you really want the games then buy the console. sony is not god, they cant afford to loose any more money.
ps: am in America and with this type of pricing, am sure to walk into a game store on launch day and pick one up (am praying to God that i can, but thats not going to happen)
i bet ps3 will be sold out in first 6months in uk and i heard uk stock allocation for ps3 is 150000 units in release date
it's going to be a computer, wow!! so it will burn DVD's/cd's? print, browse, play online internet/web games?
it aint a freaking computer, it's a console give it up. but for 600-700$ I may as well spend and extra 100-200 and get a computer that CAN do all those things and more...
i hope it doesn't break down on me like my 360. No matter how good the customer service is, sending in a 400 dollar (let alone 600 dollar) investment is not very fun. Stupid ring of death.
LOL you are a *****ing $ony-fan just because you broke your own 360 doesn't say its trash.
Do you think the PS3 will be flawless and dont suffer from any problems?
Damn $ony-fans are the worst ppl in this world.
Fact Man LOL.
No you cant upgrade your retard version of PS3 to the BIG version.
It misses HDMI, Slots for memorycard, WIFI and some other stuff.
Learn the system before you post comments.
you can upgrade by buying usb card readers from best buy. the only thing you cant upgrade is the hdmi slot, but what do you need it for? if you only want to play games then you dont need hdmi, your games will still output 1080p (if thats the highest def. the devs made it.) and thats all the differencies there except for the hdd size( the controllers are wireless unlike the 360)
The Cell base will always remain the same. So coding is not an issue. As for firmware, and such. Running Linux variant, will have homebrew running on it soon after the release.
Sony has learned with PSP, you patch it, they break it.
As with the PSP, IF the game needs a new firmware it will ask to update it upon launch of the game. And will have on the game disk so you don't have to be connected to the internet. And you will be updated without worry.
So coding for "different" versions is MOOT. Only thing will be later versions of the PS3 will have updated Cell chips (when they get faster), and to date firmware, etc.
when will sony wake up?
