Sony: PlayStation 3 is future-proof, will last longer than PS2 will |
Ó
Recently, lots of rumors have been popping up about the PlayStation 4,
but all signs from Sony say that we're not going to see it any time
soon. Perhaps putting its foot down on the matter, Sony says that it sees sales of the PS3 "far outlasting" that PS2's, which is still going strong after eight years:
PS3 won't celebrate its second birthday in the UK until March of this year, and we've said all along that the life-cycle for this generation of hardware will be longer than previous models.
PS2 was still going strong after eight years, and with the power the Cell processor provides, not to mention the fact that PS3 is inherently future-proof, we see the PS3 sales curve far outlasting that of PS2.
True to their usual style, it doesn't really answer the question of whether they'll be launching the PS4 soon, but don't read too much into it. People are still hanging on to their wallets for dear life, and a console release anytime soon would just be suicide. Specially with PS3 sales not anywhere near its peak, and PS2 sales still going steady.

That they aren't releasing a PS4 soon. Took long enough to release PS3.
This isn't Microsoft, with Windows Vista and Windows 7. Nevermind the X-Box.
Could make a more up-to-date browser then. PS3 web-browser is terrible, with low memory allocation, crap HTML rendering and poor Javascript.
I agree, the PS3 could certainly support a good web browser. They should do some sort of add on based browser (like CrapFox) and let you install add ons.
At least it has a web browser.. I'm not a fanboy, I really enjoy all three of the systems, but the PS3 is definitely more of a bang for the buck, and no one can deny that.
im using my ps3s browser to write this msg, n i love the fact that ps3 has a browser, but i do agree it needs an ubdate, increase the memory a bit
Not to mention that Sony will probably release a more compact improved Playstation 3 model before they release the Playstation 4.
They have done it with all their other video game products.
Its one of the best micro-browsers there are, and it has better javascript than IE. It has low memory allocation cause it's designed to work in-game
your kidding right?
firefox is one of the best browsers, second only to opera IMO
@god0fgod: Maybe I'm reading too much into your post (and Justingraziano's), but are you implying that the web browser's shortcomings are a reason why it's time for a PS4? :-O ....Really, as Techni states, the PS3 browser is quite potent compared to many mini/add-on browsers. If you want proof, maybe you should try running some Flash sites like Hulu or You Tube on the PSP, or better yet --Windows Mobile ....or even iPhone. There is a browser in open beta for WM called SkyFire which is pretty fine, but otherwise there are multiple flavors, brands, and variations of browsers on any number of 'media devices' which absolutely suck. (Ironically, one of the absolute WORST mini-browsers is usually Internet Explorer, when it comes to compatibility). Besides, the Web browser is there primarily for the reason that Techni stated: so that downloaded games/content can have in-game hotlinks to web pages or manuals (for example, PAIN does this, and so do the Go Sports titles). The fact that you can now watch things like You Tube and Hulu on the PS3 is really INSANE when you think about it: someone could conceivably buy an expensive-to-manufacturer PS3 and use it a merely and Internet device (and a movie player) and never buy a game. :-O ....But, when it's all said and done, I think the #1 thing that has to be said is that (however the memory mgmt gets int the way of 'regular' web use) ....it sure beats the heck out of 360's browser. (oh, wait: 360 doesn't have a web browser. Ooops.)
i seriously doubt ps3 will last for as many years as ps2 did. but it may last as long as ps2 will in terms of date - meaning that both will go off the market together.
ps2 was a design masterpiece, and it still proves to be a good platform for game development. too bad it's networking potential and hdd support never got fully utilized.
Though I doubt (but only a little) that the PS3 will last for longer then 6 years, we've already learned that the PS3 is a very powerful device wether it's for your games, music, pictures or videos streamed over your wireless network, the blu-ray and dvd discs in your shelves. The most important things the PS3 should ultimately improve are the XMB usage during a game, it's online service and..... adding ps2 backwards compatibility again (surprise :(! ). I love both my x360 and my ps3 and i was born as a ps2 fanboy, but even we fanboys can't deny we want to play good games wether it's on the x360 or the ps3! Let's face it both the machines are wonderful but microsoft really put a lot of work into integrating their online service perfectly with their monster baby. Man you PS3 guys do you even realise you can just play any music from your library while in-game? I'm expecting (commanding *cough*) sony to be working well on this area, untill that time both my x360 and ps3 get all the love from me.
so... the PS3 isn't a design masterpiece because ?
it has a lot of things which made the PS2 last this long: lots of power, yet hard to tap into atfirst.
it's not so easy as you might think. Microsoft has a patent on general ingame music. So even when the PS3 would be able to play ingame music, Microsoft would have to allow it, which is pretty unlikely, don't you think?
[q]so... the PS3 isn't a design masterpiece because ?[/q]because it's not innovative. and unfortunately it's not a "must-have" console.
ps2 was a technical masterpiece, because
- it's still a good platform for games, despite being on the market for almost 9 years (i cannot recall another console that would live that long).
- the developers hit the jackpot when designing it, optimizing it for huge data bandwidth and processing speed.
ps1 killer features -
- realtime 3d gfx
- cdrom storage
ps2 killer features
- much better graphics
- backwards ps1 compatibility was a major win for sony, people didn't have to worry about waiting for games to come out for ps3.
- dvd support (it was a most affordable dvd player at launch time)
ps3 killer features
- cell cpu
- can't think of anything else you can't get cheaper from other vendors
the problem with ps3 is that it's neither affordable, nor does it play games from your older system (except for some launch models). it doesn't offer any killer-feature that would make it stand out for average gamer.
if it weren't for psp, ps3 would be quite an innovation. unfortunately psp stole most of the innovation for itself, especially as far as networking features go. plus, it's much more affordable
I'm not EVEN GOING TO WASTE MY TIME to argue with you about how you're saying "unfortunately it's not a "must-have" console".
And WTF is up with
---
ps3 killer features
- cell cpu
- can't think of anything else you can't get cheaper from other vendors

???
Are you just stupid, or do you not even know what a PlayStation 3 is?
Go online with a device called the computer, and head onto a website (an internet page filled with text/coding) to find some information about the console called the PlayStation 3.
So I guess Sony begged Microsoft for some in-game music with a few titles? NOPE.
Who made the controller? Did they patent it? Yes.
Look at how many variations of the controller there are now.
The patent only covers general ingame music, which means that it is possible in EVERY game. Including it in a few games doesn't mean it is patent-breaking.
And what the hell are you talking about controllers?!
1. http://www.ripten.com/2008/03/31/microsoft-owns-patent-for-in-game-custom-soundtracks/
and here's the patent:
http://www.google.com/patents?id+mx93AAAAEBAJ+dq+gaming+soundtrack
yeah... that pretty much sums it up...
microsoft has a patent on it. and the guy who says ps3 is not innovative is a moron
firefox is not a MICRObrowser, PS3s is. If you want firefox, install linux and you have it.
Kinda like how apple just patented Multitouch to zoom rotate and change the perspective on Any touch screen device... Apple Wins But consumers Lose if hey want Multitouch to work well
I feel PS3 is the most innovative system this gen
Furture proof my ass!
nothing last forever.
It says future proof, nothing about it lasting forever.
what's with all the agression?
it's simple - ps3 does not offer anything unique, from a typical user's point of view. either the competition has it, or it's nothing interesting.
both ps1,ps2 and psp were quite unique, and each of them had at least one feature that justified their purchase, even at the very beginning.
everything that ps3 has to offer can be found on other consoles, or in cheaper devices.
it's also difficult to find a title that will push the platform forward. there are great ps3 games, but none of them managed to succeed in the same way the ff7 and ffx did with ps1 and ps2.
The creators of FireFox criticize every other browser made and try to sue makers of other browsers to keep their browser at the top. That's why I dont like them. Either way, the PS3's browser is indeed a microbrowser, even though the PS3 should have a full browser. I think Sony needs to either work out a deal with Opera or make their own browser.
