Sony: phat PS3s will not lose Other OS feature

One of the things that phat PS3 models have over the Slim line is the ability to install and run other OS, but rumors came out last month saying that a future firmware update will remove the said function to counter the GeoHotz exploit. According to Geoffrey Levand, PS3-Linux maintainer at Sony, those rumors are untrue.

Says Levand in an email to Haxnetwork.net:

Please be assured that SCE is committed to continue the support for previously sold models that have the "Install Other OS" feature and that this feature will not be disabled in future firmware releases.

The statement does not appear to be time-bound, and it seems by far, Sony has no intention of removing the feature present in the pricier, fatter models. Good news, Linux is here to stay.

I'm pretty sure no one would be trying to crack the system if the graphics processor was accesible through Linux 'cause then emulators would just be run through that. If Sony so anti-hacking they should just allow the Linux to be powered by the system itself also so that way no one tries to find other ways to get around it. lol.
But it's good they're not removing the feature. I even use it every now and then and I'd be pretty upset to see the option missing after a firmware update.

Nope,they would've called it a security update or something.. There was no update to fix PS3s, it just corrected itself.

This is the best PS3 news I've heard since the Zerogame project. Feels nice that I will be able to use that emulator after all! =D

Is the hack Geohot did really that much a threat to $ony?
1, it only works on obsolite phat PS3s.
2, there is still no way to run backups.
3, there is no homebrew atm.
4, does it have access to the XMB? If so what can it really do? IF it can eventually run backups and make a CFW for the PS3 then the phat units will be the minority and $ony wont really care with a handful of customised PS3s. They probably also realise with the release of a CFW for the PS3 they will sell more consoles even if its the slim they will sell people are stupid and buy the wrong console. Look at all the 3000 PSPs sold. They cant run CFW but they still sell. And the PSP GOs. They are the same.

actually i have gotten the YLOD a number of time and if you have basic knowledge of electronics and are able to follow instructions your ps3 would actually outlive you( the owner)

I bet they fired Geoffrey Levand (today it's April 1st and the OtherOS feature is removed. NO JOKE (I bet they intentionally put the update today cause people would say 'haha, it must be an April Fools joke, I'm gonna upgrade').

Sony lies to their customers on a regular basis. Might as well pirate their games, since they steal from their customers.
