Sony patenting even more controller designs...

Er, okay. Does this mean we hold a virtual wheel in GT5? - Image 1That "magic wand" from last year isn't the last of Sony's patent efforts for computer/game controllers. Here's one Sony-assigned patent the monkeys of PatentMonkey-com found, for a "Hand-held computer interactive device" (Patent No. US 7,161,579 B2), filed on November 7, 2002, recently active on January 9, this year.

It fits in the palm of the hand. The controls are sensors mounted in the "fingers" extending from the base unit, corresponding to each finger of the human hand. Apparently, based on diagrams, it's also motion and tilt-sensitive in addition to pressure-sensitive on the physical controls on each finger.

It's a VR Glove. Based on the descriptions, that's what it is (or can be), more or less (One of the referenced foreign patents was for a "telepresence surgery" glove ). A certain segment of the gaming community might draw comparisons to the Power Glove, but that's a couple of generations behind. Somehow one gets the idea that Sony's either covering as many bases as possible for the accessory/alternative controllers department for the PS3 or other consoles (or even the PC...) and/or they're not going to stop with SIXAXIS as a controller design.

The only question left is if Sony is thinking of gaming applications. (Link takes you to source site; patent itself is available for download but requires subscription or going through ad-supported download).

The whole problem was that rumble WAS patented, and Sony used it without permission.

PowerGlove kinda blew ass, and I ended up cutting the cord off of it and just using it as a toy when I played goodguys/badguys or whatever you kids call it nowadays :P

This seems like they are trying to emulate some futuristic type of interface device, but where is the holographic projector so I can have windows pop up in the air in front of me....

Well, I guess it would make for a good piano game ?

I was wondering if maybe the controller is used to mimic how a person would an object in real life. For example, lets say a weapon. You would hold that thing like a gun, and when you move press a button with the index finger for example to fire the gun, the character's index finger would do the same. Or maybe as a steering wheel and when you press one of the buttons to press the horn the same would happen on screen.

If anyone has an idea what and how you might hold the controller someone explain to me. I keep looking at the pic and can't figure it out. What are those 4 things sticking from the top of the controller? Are those things sticking out of the controller some kind of slots for your fingers?

You know, I bet this is one of Kuturagi's crazy ideas he gets from his dreams. Remember the article here on Kuturagi heading a new company formed by Sony and Bandai, creating new products? Yes, now take a minute and think about this......

# batarang controller! yeah but with side effectsGuest 2007-02-18 16:23
yeah that controller seriously kicked ass but i guess that it would flew out of peoples hands, hit a window or a tv, and return back. Then they would have to create a band to keep it to ur wrist.

Then u would see a site called ps3 got a problem.

This design does got a chance for the ps3 to go against the other competetion. It would attract more people and fans.

Something that Sony is Working In..

if We are going to use the Headset VR by Wearing it in our Heads, its unlikely we can use a normal controler or Keyboard....you cant see the keys or Buttons,so we Need something Else

that Thing is a Virual Glove..

it can sense the Tilt and Pressure of Every finger, this is Very Promising

i have a Feeling that All our Gaming Experiences Until now are Nothing as Compared to what the Future is Holding

Pray..that Sony do it with the Next-Gen Playstation and Bring us the PS4 equiped with a VR Headset,if there is Anyone who can make it Happen its Sony, they always take Risks with Expensive Technology, thus they are the Most likely to give us Such an Expensive Next-Gen Experience within Affordable Limits

The World as we Know it.....is About to Change

I agree,A racing/fighting game without rumble is never going to be as good,no feel of impact etc cant see those type of games selling very well at all. And what about games where boulders are falling behind you are they going to replace rumble with an arrow or something to show where the danger is?.

# Rumble was just a comprimise!Guest 2007-02-19 02:07
Rumble was the gaming worlds substitute for bass and a good subwoofer which the movie world has been enjoying for quite some time now. Get a subwoofer! then you'll experience even MORE than just rumble you can acually feel the bass which is what rumble was designed to do. In laymans terms its the poormans replacment for bass. And if you're low on a budget then look at this subwoofer http://www.outlawaudio.com/products/lfm2.html It has great reviews and retails for $300 so how can you loose? See the problem is that all of those without subwoofers feel this hit but all of those which do have subwoofers dont mind this because pretty much every game supports DD 5.1 now. All i can say is that you should have a subwoofer regardless of whether you're forced into having one by sony or not. They add such dept to music and movies you'll wonder how you ever got by without one!

# LOL STEREO RUMBLE !!!!!!Guest 2007-02-19 06:54

# Stereo as rumble?Guest 2007-02-19 09:11
Please learn how to read. I said 5.1 as most games are able to encode 5.1. Even most tower speakers require a subwoofer to cover the entire audible range. You dont need to turn it up that loud at all to feel the bass. But if thats an issue just buy seat shakers, rumblers etc. which will replace rumble for all of your movies and games and it adds quite the unique experience.
