Sony patent filing suggests robo peripheral |
Ó
"Can you say 'Waaaall-E'?" "Can you say 'heeeeell no'?"
A new patent filed by Sony Computer Entertainment suggests that they may have a game in the works that will require the use of a robot peripheral running around the living room as part of gameplay. Interesting. And also sorta ironic considering this is the company that called Microsoft and Nintendo a couple of add-on peddlers.
At any rate, it looks like a promising device. It has a camera that can detect its surroundings, and even a display that can show images. It has a microphone that reacts to voices and a speaker that allows the robot to respond to sounds. There are also plans to add an acceleration sensor, gyro sensor, and even a GPS receiver.
No idea on how this will be used for actual gameplay - or even if it will be used for gaming. It actually sounds like a little robopet tamagotchi or something. Maybe a game-oriented Aibo of some sort? Of course this is only patent filing, so we don't actually know if this will ever become a reality.

Sony needs to stop screwin' around with crap that most people aren't interested in. Nobody has wanted a R.O.B. since 1989.
O.O i want a little robot slave that gets me beverages and snacks while gaming...! "Playstation Robot go get me a lemonade and some fruit snacks"
ROOOBBBB the Meatloaf! NOOOOWWWWWW!!!
lol. sry, just wanted to plug wedding crashers there. maybe it's a device that's meant to clean up since the gamer will be too busy gaming. But a vaccuum with a GPS in it? goodness it must be one big house lol
That's awesome. People freaking out over it is silly tho, remember that weird dual wii-mote with balls on them that connected to make a weird uber big wii-mote with sonar as a technology?!? They're just patents, crap the come up with that they may or may not ever use.
It's patents that make you the big bucks if some fool thinks they came up with the idea and you can prove with time stamps that you came up with it first. Like Apple and their design for the IPod. Some buddy came up with the idea and had it patented for a long time then couldn't afford to renew the patent... then a year later Apple releases the IPod... too bad for buddy.
want a robot as a maid to clean up my house... they dont complaint and dont demand wages... i recall the last time i built a robot was during my final year project, had everything the same specs as the sony's patent robot minus the GPS... those were the days...
anyway, a robot is a cool idea, provided that they dont cost that much...
I want a little Metal Gear Mk.II that moves on it's own
GPS? Indoors? Good luck with that one..
