Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) announced a licensing agreement with Epic Games to use their Unreal Engine 3 technology for the development of content for some of SOE's next-gen console and PC games. Epic's 3D engine will power SOE's future projects including the DC Comics-based game currently under development at SOE-Austin.SOE president John Smedley said, "The combination of a top-notch graphics engine and a robust set of design tools will enable our teams to deliver incredible and innovative game content for next-generation consoles and the PC".
Epic introduced the power of the Unreal Engine technology in the 1998 first person shooter game Unreal. Since then, it has become the basis of several action games including Unreal Tournament and Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield.
Unreal Engine 3.0 incorporates support for Direct3D 9 and next generation APIs including XNA, Direct3D 10 and same level of OpenGL 2.x.
With the Unreal Engine 3.0 deal secured, expect SOE to deliver even more detailed and truly engaging interactive games.
