Sony on Jaffe-nix-Blu-Ray: no drama, free to speak his mind |
Ó
David Jaffe's opinion is that he would have dispensed with Blu-Ray. Sony doesn't seem to be the least bit perturbed - even if David's an employee. The other Dave - Dave Karakker - tells as much to GamePro in response to GameTrailers' interview with Jaffe. No big, so not the drama. Of course, the continuing official line from Sony is that Blu-Ray is a deliberate decision to increase the available storage space for developers to fill. The exact words used were:
[Jaffe] has earned the right to speak his mind on anything he wants when it comes to videogames. While we respect [Jaffe's] opinion, we feel strongly that the future of gaming lies in the ability to deliver more to the consumer - more gameplay options, more lifelike graphics, more dynamic sound - all in high definition. To do that, you need a storage vehicle such as the 50GB Blu-Ray disc...
Before "so not the drama" becomes amplified to "so the drama" in the internet and in the comments, note very well that in some other interviews, we remember Jaffe has expressed his appreciation for how "Sony has taken care of him" as an employee and as a developer. At the same time, he is quite an outspoken fellow, after all. He gives his opinions freely.
And yes, Karakker is right: Jaffe has the right to speak his mind. Well, everyone does, regardless of stature or position, but especially in Jaffe's case, he has most certainly earned the respect or at least the attention of his corporate superiors. And it's kinda refreshing to see Sony (kinda) relaxed about this - after you-know-what.
In any case, the ship has sailed: for better or worse, in sickness and health, Blu-Ray is there on the PS3. And we'll bet even Jaffe sees it as a bird-in-the-hand scenario: it's there, so you know he'll insist the devs holding his baby make damn good use of those 50GB of storage space for a PS3 God of War. Yes, more naughty bits. Cor, Kratos you dirty....

Blu-Ray Rocks..!
I know news is slow but damn!?!
The games Jaffe has had a hand in for Sony platforms since PSOne, he could say Sony should shut down and they wouldn't care.
Jaffe's games are system sellers. I know people who bought PS2's just to play GOWII. And I guarantee you when GOW III comes out, there will be people buying PS3's to play it.
Sure no blu ray would have lowered the price, but imagine GOW with high res textures and uncompressed digital audio! (Drooling!!)
So yeah, he said it, so what?
Jaffe said he would like to work on small download only games in the future so blu-ray wouldn't be very exciting to him.
VGCats.com rocks!!!
