Sony now profits with every PS3 sold

ps3s There was a time when Sony sold PS3 systems for less than it took to make one. It has been a tough uphill climb for them, but thanks to cheaper builds and the reduction of manufacturing costs, things have finally turned around. After almost four years in the market, SCE Worldwide Studios chief Shuhei Yoshida reveals that Sony finally profits with every PS3 sold.

"This year is the first time that we are able to cover the cost of the PlayStation 3", Yoshida told IGN. "We aren't making huge money from hardware, but we aren't bleeding like we used to." For the last few years, Sony had been counting on software sales to make up for the losses.

Unfortunately, the state that Sony's in right now might mean that we can no longer expect another price cut, at least not anytime soon. "We have lots of great games coming out and innovations with Move and 3DTV, so we don't believe this is the time for us to think about a price drop," Yoshida pointed out.

"When we bring the cost of hardware down, we are looking at opportunities to adjust prices if we believe that will increase demand," he went further. "At the moment, we are trying to catch up our production."

Back in December 2009, market intel from iSuppli indicated that Sony was close to breaking even at the time, so they probably managed to jump the hurdle within this calendar year.

yep increase production will be nice and with grand turismo 5 its gonna sell a lot. a few months ago when my phat launch broke i went to find a new one to buy but every store was out of new ones gamestop, bestbu target etc... only target would have a bundle but no thanks so i ended up buying one from craigslist new sealed on the box cheaper then the store...
the point is, major sellers not having the console in stock- i think its pretty good- at least for sony

if sony has been depending on software for profit, now that the ps3 is starting to make money, i wonder if it'll reduce game prices in the future? or is that just hopeful thinking?

I was thinking that if they've cut costs so much that they can make a profit, then maybe they should think about putting backwards compatibility back into it... but that's also wishful thinking.

i bought a 250GB slim model number CECH2100B i think is the one that's got the 45nm CPU and GPU using low power consumption! awesome and quiet! my poor launched PS3 6ogb almost died on me due to overheating but i managed to transfer all my data before it dies out. I had the 60GB for 3 years.

I had my 60 GB Japanese PS3 for like 3 years too, runs like a charm

i looked after the ps3 like it's a new born baby and cleaned it every often such a shame it finally gave up on me :(

My 80 gb died after just 2 years... Managed to fix it by popping the mother board in the oven for a few hours... worked like a charm

Now they have no excuses for not being able to hold on to PS3 exclusives, because now they can afford to offer a bit of incentive(money ) to the developers.

And all it took was alienating most of their audience by removing BC (so they can force them to buy 'remastered' versions of the same games) and Other OS capability. Nice job, Sony. Nice job.

First of all they only removed PS2 backwards compatibility, PSX games are still playable. 2nd, they are not selling remastered versions of the same game, they are selling multiple remastered games in one disc for $40, and that's way less than what you pay if you buy them separately on PS2, so they're doing us a favor. Third, the only people who complained about Other OS were the hackers who can't live without Linux. The only people who where alienated where fanboys who didn't even care that Sony was loosing over $100 for every PS3 they sold. Stop whining and enjoy what you have.

dude, even then my ps3 couldn't play the ps1 games i had

and now with the release of the slims, im not even sure that they can play ps1 games at all. man im never gonna be an early adopter of a "next gen" console anymore, we get burned eventually in the long run, the only advantage the launch consoles have, is a removable hard drive, a 5oogb 7200 rpm drive is pretty nice. also on the old 60 and 80s, there were more usb slots and card readers. the other advantage is that the phats look pretty

with their touch sensitive buttons and high gloss finish. /rant
ive been wanting to say that for a while, and its probably gonna take qj 2 weeks to post this....

It seems like it took forever, but you finally reached this point. Now that you are here, I expect you to finally start making good on all those promises you made. And a price cut in quarter 4 wouldnt be half bad of an idea either.

i think its at a good price now, i did buy it for £500 the first time around then got a slim.
Anyone who owns a ps3 know there well made, ms were prob in profit from every console but at what cost, badly made and high failure rate treating people like sh*t.

Congrats, Sony! You got the only thing you've ever been wanting! Now, can you drop the PS2 and re-introduce PS2 bc on the PS3?

No. because that's not profitable.
