Sony not expecting huge day one sales, counting on word of mouth to move units

Sony's keeping it real and on the downlow as regards their expectation on the launch sale numbers for Move. While they don't expect long lines at the storefronts, they are instead counting on good old word of mouth to move units along later on.

Let's keep it real, guys.

Sad SCE Senior VP Ray Maguire to the Edinburgh Interactive Festival crowd yesterday, "Exactly as with EyeToy in the PS3 days, it's a product that needs to be sampled. You need to get your hands on it. You need to understand it. You need to try it."

He further divulged, "Am I expecting a massive day one? Not particularly. We didn't with EyeToy, either. It went on to be massively successful. As people saw the value when they tried it they told their friends. Their friends bought it. They told their friends. Word of mouth grew the marketplace. That's what I expect from Move as well."

Well I hope Move doesn't go the EyeToy's way exactly. I mean, we all know how successful that actually was.

for some reason this feels like a make or break for sony. it's their chance to really cement the ps3's place in gaming history as THE power console of the generation once and for all, and if eyetoy is their gauge of what good sales movement is, then they're pretty much in trouble, at least as far as their expectations are concerned.

I have a feeling they meant the Playstation Eye, and not the EyeToy... A decent number of my friends have the Eye, using it for video chatting among other things, as far as i knew back in the ps2 era, i was the only one with the eyetoy among people i knew.

Sony is recruiting Playstation G.A.P. members at the moment across the country to act as sales reps for the Move. I particularly like that they employ the gamers themselves, so at least people can be sure to get good information when they go to these events and try out the move for themselves. But i think it definately will be a work of mouth seller, i mean, after all, things like 3D you cant sell through a commercial, and since the move isnt the wii, people will see it, think, oh, this is gonna be like the wii, when in reality, it wont be. To understand the experience you prolly will just have to try it out, and that's what is gonna really sell it. It makes me think of how after my friend tried out the 3D enabled ps3s at a sony style store and told me how it was really great, only know 3D from movie experiences, and that Sly Cooper game on the ps2.... there was no way i could know for myself if it was any good just by reading an article.

the thing is, that until people start using the Move and give good feedback about it, there will not be a goundbreaking amount of sales. They need to demo it on the stores and to the public.

I think he meant Eyetoy in the PS2 days, not Playstation Eye in the PS3 days. Either way, the only reason I bought the Eyetoy and the PS Eye, was that they went on sale. (Bargain hunter I guess).
I bought the "Eye of Judgment" bundle for $9.97. Beside EoJ, I've only used the PE for the mugshot on Burnout Paradise.
My Eyetoy Play2 bundle was also $10, still sealed in its box, unused.

I suspect that if Sony doesn't give adequate launch support to Move, and develop some AAA titles for it, I'll pick one up in a $20 bargain bin in a year or so.

The people that are going to buy this day one have already decided. They probably decided months and months ago (I did when I saw the final design and tech demos).

All I need to buy is a $50 controller, maybe a game, although MAG will be supporting it so not even. (although I have a feeling using the ps3 controller as the "navigator" will not be ideal by far)

I think some demo's and marketing may get some others to dive in day one...but really, people will just have to try it and be like, whoa I like this....
