Sony: new 40GB PS3 still using 90nm chips

PlayStation 3 - Image 1We recently made a report about the new 40 GB PS3 stating that it was using 65nm chips and had increased cooling powers to boot. Suffice it to say, however, that those reports seem to be erroneous. A Sony spokesperson recently told Heise Online that they were actually still using 90nm processing chips with the new PlayStation 3.

This isn't to say that the PlayStation 3 hasn't been improved, however. According to the report, the PS3 is still sporting a revised design that's supposed to lower power consumption. Instead of cranking out 180 to 200 watts, as previous PS3s were likely to do, the revised design lessens the power consumption to 120-140 watts instead, saving you both some power and a bit of cash as well.

Sony does still plan on implementing 65nm chips in the future. For now, however, it seems these 90nm chips will just have to do.

What is the difference anyway?

I dont know for sure, but I think there is no difference between the power of a 90nm chip and a 65nm (correct me if I'm wrong). The difference however is the heat produced by the two chips, where the 65nm has sufficeintly lower heat emission and less power consumption. For a console like the 360 though that was an one way road for MS, but still the proplems persit... Now when it comes to the ps3 and its proven reliability epsecially to its heat disfusal capabilities, I think unless it offers more power then it is not actually needed in a ps3 at this moment. But saving a few bucks on power whould be nice too.

Ignore the additional 'h' in the word would :)

Yes, only benefits are less power and lower cost to produce. MS was moving to 65nm chips anyway because they are cheaper to make. And I find your "but still the proplems persit" comment pretty funny, and nice spelling BTW. I haven't heard about any 65nm 360 failures. I'm sure they would be top news if there were any.

Well

Its true that PS3 doesn't need the small chips but saving some bucks is a good idea though. I haven't heard any news on 360 having problems. But if thats true than that sucks. Im still thinking of getting a 360, maybe in a few months time.

meh

im pretty sure i have read the news about the new halo theme xbox 360 having 65nm chip and still having RROD. http://forums.maxconsole.net/showthread.php?t+82016 http://www.qj.net/Red-ring-sighted-on-Halo-3-limited-Xbox-360-consoles/pg/49/aid/103743 http://www.boxxet.com/Xbox_360/Image_First_case_of_Xbox_360_65nm_CPU_GPU_Falcon_RROD.17d5x6.d

.

I wonder how they lowered power consumption by 60 watts without changing the chips. The old design must have been wasteful. I don't care too much about that. This makes me happy I have the best version, the 60gb one. With fewer vents and smaller heatpipe, has cooling been reduced? That's what I heard anyway.

cheap hmmm interesting?

it basically the 20 gb ps3 but without the backwards capability. but it has wi-fi i think and 20 extra gb. This is basically a console for people who arent going to be playing old ps2 or some psONE games anymore.
