Sony, mum on US revisions for PS3

PS3 Console - Image 1The European PS3s have no backward compatibility without downloading firmware for it. Why should this matter if you're in the US? Because it could happen to you.

Sony Computer Entertainment America was contacted by 1Up regarding this matter. The reply it got didn't do much to clear things up. A Sony Representative responded, "We have no announcement regarding any hardware specification changes for PS3 in North America at this time."

As of now, people everywhere are wondering about the configuration of the next shipment of PS3s. Will they still be backward compatible? Or will we need to download new firmware to play our huge collection of PS2 games? Only time will tell.

They'll lock the EE so that they'll only have to manage 1 version of firmware (code base that is...)

# Firmware and PS2 hardware removedGuest 2007-02-23 08:20
I see trouble brewing on the firmware updates, and wtf is with charging almost double for the PAL PS3 and taking out the PS2 hardware compatibility?.

# I just read the article, and like usual its blown outGuest 2007-02-23 08:33
of proportion. First of all SONY is not getting rid of firmwares, they need them for piracy. Also the fact is that SONY will not try to make all "older games" compatible, it has something to do with the signal Europeans use, PAL. Sony is now trying to focus on next gen games, which by next year all of us PS3 owners will forget about the last gen. I remember playing Resident Evil on the old PS1, when I played Resident Evil 4, the first game lost all of its appeal, and the same thing will happen when the new game some out. If any M$ fans starts slamming SONY on this issue, just remember a majority of XBOX games still do not work on the 360! Nintendo so far is the only company that did this thing right, but after playing the new Zelda its hard pressed to go back and play blocks on the Wii.

Here's the spin....

SCEE president David Reeves added, "PS3 is first and foremost a system that excels in playing games specifically designed to exploit the power and potential of the PS3 system. Games designed for PS3 offer incredible graphics quality, stunning gameplay and massively improved audio and video fidelity that is simply not achievable with PS and PS2 games. Rather than concentrate on PS2 backwards compatibility, in the future, company resources will be increasingly focused on developing new games and entertainment features exclusively for PS3, truly taking advantage of this exciting technology."

In other words they are doing an M$, they are focusing on new games.

# 1UP they are the worst rumor makerGuest 2007-02-23 08:36
1up been from begging the crazy biased against sony. All of them are 360 fan boys except for one them. They even treated GOD OF WAR 2 like another regular game in there reviews for god sake.

Didn't you guys noticed all the rumors are from 1UP like that Microsoft is buying CAPCOM witch lead to another rumor about DMC 4 going 360.

And the best thing is they make the rumor and then they call sony to see if it is true. What the f$#@ is that.

If you guyz do not believe me just Google (1 up biased) and you will see how many forums talking about this issue or even watch their video podcast or even the interview they made with God of war maker.

# Try get an idea about what you're talking about firstGuest 2007-02-23 08:49
Nothing said anything about getting rid of firmware. Firmware is not a tool against piracy, it's the OS of the system, it would be a brick if they got rid of it.

Also, it's nothing to do with PAL. Pal means little more than the fact it is using a 50Hz signal instead of 60Hz. It's just another way they can lose less money on each PS3.

# Might have made sense if ..Guest 2007-02-23 08:56
They would have removed that and put in a scalar chip, but thats to obvious for sony. Instead it seems like, "how can we screw the consumer to save a couple bucks." Sony deserves to burn in hell, they never seem to think before they leap, like, eva.

# ok...Guest 2007-02-23 09:55
why is it ok for MS to profit $100+ on every console while Sony has to loose $200+?

# Who needs some tissues?Guest 2007-02-23 10:48
This is not new. Sony has done hardware revisions with both the PS and PS2. The PS lost the serial i/o port once the SCPH 5000 series came out. The PS2 lost the firewire or IEE1102b in the summer of 2002 i think. (not quite sure on the timeframe) They did announce in 2005 that the first PS3's will have the EE and that future revisions will have an emulator.

Why this is a big deal is beyond me.

Complaining about this makes as much sense to me as country music, and organized religion.

Completely baffled I am

# it's ok because...Guest 2007-02-23 12:16
microsoft had to lose money on them for a while, but because they released it so early, the price of the technology has gone down.. so now they can make money off of them, or probably drop the price. that will be fun for sony :P

# SONY NEEDS TO GET *****EDGuest 2007-02-23 19:30
Sony think they are smart first we get a very very very very very very very very very very very very very late launch here in the UK / E.U then we have to pay 425 pounds for the console not including the 20 gb version they wont release yet.

Then you have to be the one of the 500,000 that have to sign up to get the blu-ray version of Casino Royale whilst the U.S get there blu-ray packaged in the console then this outrage out having less backwards compatibility for ps2 / ps1 games than the U.S and japan.

Sony just keep screwing us UK / E.U citizens over and over and over and over and over again we need to teach Sony a lesson about equal rights.

And before i forget you guys aint gonna believe this but two guys broke into a store or a place dunno which just to play a ps3 before its released in the pal territories click on this to see what im talking about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F0S7k6lPcQw

Because they will be delivering a lower level of product to Europe but they are charging double the price for it. True they did mention that software emulation would come but after they said that they said this:

Ken Kutaragi:

"...the PS3 will feature backwards compatibility with PS and PS2 games from day one. I'm emphasizing this because, from what I hear, there are some platforms that haven't been able to completely do this. It's costly in terms of hardware, but we'd rather [invest] firmly on compatibility from the beginning, rather than to have issues later on."

# You're not aloneGuest 2007-02-23 21:27
Just an FYI, the Blu-Ray movie was only included with the first 500,000 PS3's in the US as well...

Too bad about it costing ya'll the extra cash over there tho, guess you just gotta decide if it's gonna be worth it to you or not.

This does sort of stink but im sure sony will do what they can to make the main ps2 games compatable. Just got FF12 and that better be compatible by the time i can get a PS3.

its all been bunked. Another hoax by someone who has no life. All the rep from Sony said is that they did all they could do for backward playability. The chip stays!
